Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) is a prestigious national key university in China and
enjoys a high reputation in research and education in science, technology and other areas of
scholarship. Founded in 1940, originally called Yan’an Natural Science Institute, this institute is
one of the first Chinese universities to run a graduate school, and one of the national “Project
211” and “Project 985” universities which are given priority for development by the Chinese
government. It is now under the administration of the Ministry of Industry and Information
Technology of China.
BIT is renowned for the excellence of its faculty. It has 2,508 faculty to teach and advise
about 14,774 undergraduates and 11,209 graduates and 759 overseas students. Among the
faculty are 9 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and/or the Chinese Academy
of Engineering, 17 China National Experts with Outstanding Contributions, 4 National Eminent
Professors, 17 global experts recruited by China’s “Recruitment Program of Global Experts” (8
by the Long-Term Program, 2 by the Short-Term Program, 1 by the Global Experts Program,
and 6 by the Young Scholars Program), 27 distinguished Chang Jiang scholars recruited by “the
Change Jiang Scholars Program” (a higher education development program in China provided
by the MOE and the Li KaShing Foundation), 20recipients of “the National Natural Science
Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars”, 20 national professors recruited by the “New Century
Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project”, and 127 talents recruited by “the New
Century Outstanding Talents Program” of the MOE. The University also has 2 Innovation
Research teams supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, 9 Innovation Team
supported by the MOE Innovation Team Development Plan, and 12 Innovation Team of
National Defense. BIT has produced over 200,000 graduates, including 35 Chinese
academicians, and over 110 generals and heads of state.
