Aims and Objectives of the Programme Module
This programme module aims to provide the Learner with the skills necessary to create printed
communication documents using graphic design text and images available in word processing and/or
presentation software applications
Objectives:
• To develop competencies in word processing and/or presentation applications in order to
utilise the typographical and graphic design features of the applications
• To enable the Learner’s creativity in researching information appropriate to a chosen project
• To facilitate the Learner to identify various graphic design options available when producing
items of print communication
• To demonstrate the Learner’s ability to mix images and text to communicate an idea or
message
Learning Outcomes of Level 3 Graphic Design 3N0584
Learners will be able to:
1. Describe the processes involved in the production of graphic and textual printed materials
2. Identify a range of printed material which combines text and image to communicate an idea or
information
3. Use a range of typographical standards including different typefaces, spacing of words, varying
lines, columns, gutters
4. Use a variety of graphic design techniques including tracing, enlarging and reducing images,
overlaying or shadowing to manipulate an image, letter-form or word
5. Construct simple graphic images which clearly communicate an idea using a variety of media
techniques
6. Produce written text for publication using correct spelling, punctuation, sentences, paragraphs
and layout
7. Use a range of printing techniques to produce the items in the chosen project which are
appropriate to content, target audience and purpose and clearly communicate a message or
idea
8. Produce a document consisting of graphic and textual elements within an agreed time scale and
with due regard to cost.

Indicative Content and Programme Outcomes
Getting Started
Explore with the Learner:
• The process involved in the production of graphic and textual printed materials, for example,
o Deciding on the message to be communicated
o Identifying a target audience
o Considering the content of the finished product
o Researching the availability of second hand or original source material, for example,
magazine illustrations, headlines, photographs, logos
o Agreeing the type of material needed to produce the project
o Considering the purpose of the product
o Deciding the printing technique to use to produce the item
o Estimating the time for completion
o Estimating the cost of production
•
•
Brainstorm with the Learner a list of potential graphic design projects that combine text and
image to communicate an idea or information for a target audience and purpose and
consider:
o which projects are suitable to the Learner’s interests
o the resources available to the Learner to aid in designing and producing the project
Suitable graphic design projects may be, for example:
o bookmarks
o newsletters
o greeting cards
o flyers
o flags
o banners
o product packaging
o logos
o posters
o tickets
o brochures
o booklets
o invitations
o calendars
o menus
o presentations
Graphic Design Skills
• Facilitate the Learner to use the features available in word processing and/or presentation
packages to produce graphic and textual printed materials, to include:
o Creating a document/presentation
o Saving the document/ presentation
o Closing the document/presentation
o Retrieving the document/presentation
o Editing the document/presentation
o Printing the document/presentation
• Demonstrate for the Learner the common features of word processing and/or presentation
applications using typographical standards, to include:
o Inserting text
Graphic Design 3N0584
Cork Education and Training Board
•
o Formatting text
o Deleting text
o Changing the line spacing
o Selecting a font style/size
o Text aligning
o Changing the font colour
o Use of columns
o Modifying the gutter settings
o Printing
Facilitate the Learner to use these features in producing items of print communication
• Describe for the Learner a variety of graphic design techniques, to include:
o Using Word Art
o Reducing and enlarging an image
o Manipulating an image by overlaying or shadowing
o Tracing
o Letter form
• Facilitate the Learner to use these techniques in producing items of print communication
• Facilitate the Learner to prepare text for publication, ensuring the following:
o Correct punctuation
o Correct sentences
o Use of the SpellCheck facility
o Correct layout and use of paragraphs
o Correct layout of the document to include considering the most appropriate page size, the
use of grids or sketches to plan the layout, making allowances for folding etc.
• Explore with the Learner some simple graphic images that are used to communicate an idea, for
example:
Ladies and Gents Toilets
o
o
Wheelchair facilities
o
Stop
o
No Mobile Phones

Facilitate the Learner to design his/her own simple graphic images to communicate an idea.
These images should be constructed using a variety of different media techniques, for example:
o Photographs
o Collage
o Laser/ inkjet print outs
o Engraving
o Etching
o Pyrography
• Facilitate the Learner to prepare a document consisting of graphic elements with textual
elements, to include:
o Considering an appropriate time scale to complete the work
o Working to that time scale
o Considering the cost of producing the document
o Producing the document to the agreed cost
o Considering the content of the document, the target audience and the purpose
•
Facilitate the Learner to use a range of different printing techniques, appropriate to the items of
print communication the Learner is producing, for example:
o Embossing
o Laminating
o Varnishing
o Letter pressing
o Laser/desk jet printing

Specific Information Relating to the Assessment Techniques
The Assessor is required to devise assessment briefs for the Collection of Work. In devising the
assessment briefs, care should be taken to ensure that the Learner is given the opportunity to show
evidence of achievement of ALL learning outcomes.
Collection of Work
100%
The collection of work may be produced throughout the duration of this programme module.
The Learner will compile a collection of work that contains evidence for ALL the learning
outcomes. The collection of work should include a minimum of five examples of print
communication, demonstrating the following:
• The use of a range of typographical standards
• The use of a variety of graphic design techniques
• The use of a variety of printing techniques
• The communication of an idea using a simple graphic image and including the use of a
variety of media techniques to construct the image
• Published text, free from spelling error and with due consideration to layout, punctuation,
sentence and paragraph layout
• A document consisting of both text and graphics, produced within an agreed time scale
and demonstrating due regard to cost
In producing the collection of work the Learner should demonstrate due consideration of:
• the content of the printed communication
• the target audience
• the purpose of the printed communication
• the message or idea being communicated
In addition to the above the Learner will also demonstrate the ability to:
• describe the processes involved in producing graphic and textual printed materials
• identify a range of printed materials which combines text and image to communicate an
idea or information
All instructions for the Learner should be clearly outlined in an assessment brief. If group work or
teamwork forms part of the assessment, then each Learner’s achievement must be separately
assessed.
