Physics. Laboratory Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) multi-program laboratory focusing on national and global energy and environmental issues. The Laboratory is managed for DOE by University of Tennessee/Batelle. ORNL's mission is to conduct basic and applied research and development in order to advance the nation's energy resources, environmental Selection: All applications are first reviewed by a Student Selections Committee composed of GLCA and ACM faculty members and an administrator from each of the GLCA, ACM, and ORNL. Those applications approved by the Selections Committee are sent to one or more ORNL research groups whose interests are similar to those of the student. Acceptance into the ORSS is dependent on successful placement with an ORNL research group. The seminar includes field trips to acquaint students with some of the research facilities at ORNL. During the latter part of the program, the seminar serves as a forum for students to present their own research data for discussion and comment. If I could do it again, I would participate in the Oak Ridge Science Semester.” Credits and Grades Students are eligible to earn three K units; two for the research project and one for a seminar. Research at ORNL: Each student is expected to devote at least 35 hours per week to research on a specific project under the guidance of an ORNL staff scientist. Students are expected to contribute significantly to the design and methodological approach of their research activity, and often find this the most demanding and rewarding experience of their college careers. Grades from all study away courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. Students must earn the equivalent of a C in the local grading system to receive credit for coursework completed in study away programs. Coursework and all projects must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given.
