GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves
and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of
iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone
meal around the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren't brought
under control. There is a new generation going now. This
batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the
damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine
grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a
fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing
while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new
sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can
dry the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add
organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month
or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep
the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable
environment.

BACK TO SCHOOL - 3-WEEK GUIDE
Avoid the last-minute scramble with this step-by-step guide
to getting everything done. Plan to start three weeks prior to
the first day and tackle one task each day.
3 weeks before school starts:
• Inventory your child’s clothing. Make a list of what
she/he needs before you start shopping.
• Familiarize yourself with the school’s web site for
school-supply lists and other information.
• Make a list of things to purchase new or replenish,
as well as other items, like backpacks or lunchboxes.
• Gather ads and circulars for back-to-school sales.
• Review your emergency plan. Call your emergency
contacts to confirm they can still help.
2 weeks before school starts:
• Have your new middle school child practice with
a combination lock.
• Encourage your child to write down their locker combination,
class schedule and teachers’ names in a planner or agenda.
(And double check it.)

“I’m In PAIN”
Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor
of chiropractic can help my problem?”
We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and
examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete
consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary,
(procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00.
We will make this special program available through August. The only exception
to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents)
in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

SANDWICH FREE SCHOOL LUNCH!
“Not another sandwich!” is a common statement from kids when they
open their lunch boxes DAILY (and probably also from you!). There are
some TASTIER sandwich free lunch ideas for school lunches. Make sure
to have the right lunch box to house the food variety (we recommend
a bento or compartment lunch box with a cool pack):
• Food on sticks - Pack with: Rice, sliced cucumbers,
sliced mango, yogurt-covered pretzels
• Quesadillas - Pack with: Avocado slices or guacamole, jicama
sticks, pineapple chunks, pumpkin seeds or tortilla chips
• Spring Rolls - Pack with: Cubed meat or cheese, sliced red
bell peppers, blueberries, chocolate square.
• Deli Meat Roll Ups - Pack with: Whole-wheat pretzels, celery
(optional sunflower butter filing), cinnamon-sprinkled apple
slices, coconut macaroon.
• Vegetable Sushi or Onigiri - Pack with: Sushi condiments,
edamame, raspberries, snickerdoodle cookie.
• Cold Noodle Salads - Pack with: Sushi condiments, edamame,
raspberries, snickerdoodle cookie.
• Hummus and Pita Plate - Pack with: Salami, olives, carrots,
baby tomatoes and grapes. (Note that dipping is easier and
less messy if you pack the hummus in a separate container.)
• Quinoa Salad - Pack with: Tomato/mozzarella/basil lollipops,
popcorn, pear slices, baby brownie.
• Breakfast for Lunch - Pack with: Sliced strawberries, squeez
able yogurt. (Frozen yogurt tubes also make great small ice
packs and typically thaw by lunch.)
• Leftover Picnic Lunch - Pack with: Potato salad or coleslaw, watermelon,
broccoli with yogurt ranch dip, s’mores (or s’mores brownie).

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE
Did you know that the governing documents of Lakes of Pine
Forest requires all homeowners to submit an application
for any improvement or modification to the exterior of your
home? This application is reviewed and decided on by the
Architectural Control Committee (ACC). Springtime is the
season to make repairs and upgrades to the exterior of
your home, including the landscaping. Please don’t forget
to submit your application before making a change to the
exterior of your home. The ACC Committee tries to process
the applications as quickly as possible. Supplying the
specifications of your improvement and a sample or detailed
list of materials to be used will also help speed up this process.
You may contact Crest Management for an application.
LEAVING TOWN FOR
AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME?
• Turn off the water to the house and open all outside valves
and leave them open while away.
• If you have a gas water heater, you want to turn
the control to “Pilot.”
• If the water heater is electric, you want to turn
the breaker off.
• You do not need to drain your water heater.
• For your washing machine, it is a good idea
to turn the valves off.
• For your HVAC system, it is a good idea to set the thermostat
to 55 or 60 degrees and open your cabinet doors.
• Have your plumber turn back on your house water supply
and flush out the lines.
CHILD SAFETY WHILE HOME ALONE

HELP REDUCE CRIME & KEEP OUR STREETS
LIGHTS LIT!
If you have decided to allow your children to stay home
alone during the holiday break, you will need to provide
them with some basic training. The following are just a few
suggestions:
• Make sure they can lock and unlock the doors
and windows.
• Keep a first aid kit handy and teach them a few basics.
• Provide a list of helpful numbers.
• Write down your home address.
• Go over steps to follow in case of an emergency.
• Instruct them to keep all doors, windows
and shades closed at all time.
• Do not open the door for strangers!
• For more tips, visit www.safekids.com.
PLEASE SLOW DOWN FOR OUR KIDS!
Use caution as you travel through the community and watch
for children walking to and from the bus stops. Acknowledge
and obey the laws for school zones and bus loading and
unloading. If the lights are blinking, you need to stop! If
thirty seconds can’t be spared to slow down for a school
zone or stop for a bus, what about the ten minutes it takes
a deputy to write a ticket? Safety makes the most sense. A
little patience and vigilance on the road will go a long way
in keeping Lakes of Pine Forest’s children safe.

NO FARM ANIMALS ALLOWED
Chickens, roosters and ducks are not allowed as pets in the
subdivision. Domestic animals such as cats and dogs are
the only types of animals allowed. Legal action will be taken
against violators.
KEEPING OUR DRAINS CLEAN
Did you know that you are responsible to keep the curbs
in front of your property clean and free from yard waste
and other debris? The curbs direct rainwater to the County’s
storm drainage system and the water needs a clean path to
flow through to the drains. Grass growing in the curbs and
drains block that free flow and may contribute to the high
water we typically see with a heavy rain.
Also, it is illegal to sweep or blow any lawn clippings, leaves
or other debris into the county drains. Please re mind your
lawn crews to take your clippings with them. Thank you for
helping to keep Lakes of Pine Forest neat and clean!

August 8th-12th; 15th-19th - Professional Days
August 9th-12th - New Student Registration
August 22nd - First Day of School
September 5th – Student/Staff Holiday
NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION
New Student Registration will begin
August 9th-12th, 2016 from 8 AM
to 3 PM at all campuses. Visit your
campus website or contact your school
for further information. To register,
parents must provide the school with
the following items:
• Certified copy of the child’s birth
certificate from the Bureau of Vital
Statistics (see City of Houston Bureau
of Vital Statistics to obtain a birth
certificate if born in the city of Houston)
• Current immunization record
• Proof of residency (a current electric,
gas, or water bill or a lease agreement)
• Social security card for each child, if
available
• Photo ID of parent or guardian
Since not every school has a
prekindergarten program, parents
8
may call the neighborhood elementary
school to help determine the school in
which to register their child.
To find out what school you are currently
zoned for click on the following link:
www.transfinderi.com/tfitest/address.
aspx?cid=CFI02966337550&rdr=1 or
go to CFISD.net, Parents & Students,
Registration, Which school do I attend?
Type in your street and zip code.
To be eligible for the Prekindergarten
program, your child must be 4 years of
age by September 1, 2016 and meet an
eligibility requirement as determined by
Texas law. No exceptions can be made.
Children entering Kindergarten for
the first time must be five years old on
or before September 1, 2016. Due to
Texas state law on age requirements,
no exceptions will be made. The district
provides full-day kindergarten.
If your child is currently enrolled in
Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D. and over the
summer you moved from one school
zone to another within the district, you
need to provide the registrar (at your
child’s new home campus) with your
current proof of residence during new
student registration. The registrar will
August 2016
request your child’s records from his/
her previous school.
CYFAIR BUS TRANSPORTATION
The
Transportation
Department
provides regular morning and afternoon
bus stops for eligible students attending
their home campus as determined
by the Cypress Fairbanks I.S.D.’s
established attendance boundaries.
Students on a transfer are ineligible for
transportation.
Safe and efficient bus stops are
established appropriately for each
grade level. Each student is preassigned
to the safest established bus stop for
their destination. A student should
be picked up and dropped off only
at the designated stop. Bus stops are
generally corner stops for elementary
students and may be at common,
centralized locations such as parks
or community centers for middle and
high school students. As a courtesy
to parents, activity late run buses
are provided for eligible after school
activities at secondary campuses.
Secondary late run bus stops are at
centralized locations.
Buses are routed to arrive at campuses
20 minutes prior to school bell time.
Lakes of Pine Forest
It is recommended that students begin riding the bus the
1st day of school so that student bus assignments, student
loads and seating assignments may be identified as quickly
as possible. For safety reasons, students should arrive at the
bus stop 5-10 minutes prior to their scheduled pick-up time.
Arriving earlier is not recommended.
For the first few weeks of school, several factors contribute
to delays (traffic adjusting to the buses, student seat
assignments, campus delays while ensuring every student is
loaded for take home correctly, possible overcrowding and
route direction adjustments). Please understand that this is
a transition time for students and district staff, therefore we
appreciate your patience in advance.
You may obtain your student’s bus information based on
your home address the week of August 8th as follows:
1. You will receive a POSTCARD via U.S. mail with your
student’s bus information.
2. If you are signed up for School Messenger and have
provided an email address and/or telephone number, you
will receive an email and/or voice mail.
3. You may visit www.cfisd.net, choose PARENTS & STUDENTS
~ TRANSPORTATION ~‘Which Bus Do I Ride?’ - enter your
student’s transportation address.
Per Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidelines, eligible
addresses for transportation within your student’s attendance
boundary are 1) Your home address 2) state recognized
daycare provider or 3) your student’s grandparent address.
In accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, parents
of students riding buses from/to an eligible location above
other than their home address are asked to notify the
school in writing. Once the morning and afternoon bus stop
is approved and documented at the school, any one time
exception or permanent change requires a parent’s written
request. All transportation address requests are contingent
upon the school’s verification that the above address criteria
is met.

The women’s group will begin a study His Name is Jesus,
Life and Power in the Master’s Ministry by Pastor and Author
Jack Hayford. His Name Is Jesus focuses on the life of Jesus
as seen in Matthew, Mark and Luke. It shows how Jesus
fulfilled Old Testament prophecy and how to understand
key parables and other teachings of Jesus. Learning the
importance of applying His words to our lives, we’ll explore
Christ’s earthly ministry as seen in His titles and discover
more fully what it means to follow Him as Savior and Lord.
The Tuesday Evening Ladies’ Bible Study at Living Word
Lutheran Church is informal, but with an emphasis on the
Word of God. We invite you to join us. Weekly attendance is not
mandatory. Come with your Bible when you are able to and
please invite your friends and neighbors for some great study,
sharing and fellowship. The group meets from 7 to 8:30 PM
on Tuesday evenings in the Micah Room in the Administrative
Building. Living Word is located at 3700 S Mason Road in
Katy (the corner of Mason Road and Westheimer Parkway).
A private Facebook page will be used to communicate
information and facilitate discussion. If you would like to
be added to the group, please email Selina at selinapon@
