The sixth annual ceremony was held at the historic and monumental Palais Opera de Garnier under the patronage of French President Jacques Chirac, with the participation of Israeli Minister of Education Prof. Yael (Yuli) Tamir, TAU President Itamar Rabinovich, Rector Dany Leviatan and Vice President Yehiel Ben-Zvi. Under an agreement between the Dan David Foundation and the French Ministry of Culture and Communications, the ceremony will be held in Paris and at Tel Aviv University in alternate years. The prize, which totals $3 million, is endowed by the Dan David Foundation and headquartered at Tel Aviv University. It is awarded in three fields selected to represent three time dimensions: Past, Present and Future. One tenth of prize money in each category is allocated to graduate fellowships. This year’s winner in the Past Time Dimension for "Historians – Authors of Major Works of History" was Jacques Le Goff of France, a major historian of the European Middle Ages. He is the founder of “historical anthropology,” an approach based on an open, broad and imaginative collaboration between history and the social sciences that provides a fresh and contemporary understanding of human history. He was cited for his erudition, professional and civil commitment and for mentoring generations of young historians. The prize in the Present Time Dimension for "Contemporary Music" was shared by conductor Zubin Mehta and French composer of contemporary music, Pascal Dusapin. Mehta, who is Artistic Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Honorary President of TAU’s Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, was cited as a “vivid symbol of today’s cross-cultural world and living proof of the power of music to bridge different cultures and to break social and political barriers"; and Dusapin, for “providing a bridge between various strands of creativity in contemporary musical and visual arts and for his strong musical craftsmanship and cultural diversity.” The prize for the Future Time Dimension for "Quest for Energy" was awarded to three pioneers in alternative energy: Dr. James Hansen of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York shared the prize with joint laureates Drs. Sarah R. Kurtz and Jerry M. Olson of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado, USA. Dr. Hansen received the prize for his significant contribution to research in climate change and for raising public awareness of global pollution. Drs. Kurtz and Olson were awarded the prize for their key contributions to the development of solar cells, creating a crucial pathway to the development of alternative sources of energy.
