SECTION 12 36 00
SOLID SURFACING COUNTERTOPS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.02
SUBMITTALS
A. General: In compliance with Section 01 33 00 and as specified herein.
B. Shop Drawings: Submit for approval Shop Drawings indicating jointing and anchoring details, and the
dimensions and identifying number of each piece of granite. No final sizing or finishing shall be done
until Shop Drawings have been approved by Architect. Shop Drawings are based on approved
cabinetry Shop Drawings as well as the Drawings. Discrepancies between documents shall be brought
to the attention of Architect prior to proceeding with work. Approved Shop Drawings govern fabrication.
1. Where built-in anchors must be set into other work, provide anchor location Drawings in ample time
for review by Architect and delivery for anchor setting.
2. Show edge and corner details, reveals, special shapes, returns and jointing details at full scale.
C. Product Data:
1. Submit detailed product description including finishes.
2. Submit maintenance data for granite.
3. Submit warranty information and policies.
4. Provide test results from independent laboratory indicating compressive strength of terrazzo
countertops.
D. Color Samples: Color selections as indicated in the Finish Schedule on Drawings. Submit sufficient
samples of 12-inches x 12-inches to Architect to indicate finish and anticipated range of color to be
supplied. An approved set of samples shall be available at Field Office. Finish and color shall remain
within the range of the approved samples.
1.03
QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Source Limitations for Granite: Obtain granite from quarries having adequate capacity and facilities to
meet the specified requirements. Cutting and finishing shall be done by a firm equipped to process the
material promptly on order and in strict accordance with specifications and approved Shop Drawings.
If requested by Owner/Architect, the Contractor shall provide evidence to this effect.
B. Installer Qualifications: Employ tradesmen experienced in fabrication and installation of granite
countertops to ensure strict compliance with approved design, shop drawings.
C. Pre-installation Conference: Hold pre-installation conference prior to beginning countertop installation.
1. Contractor, Architect, Owner, countertop fabricator, and other subcontractors who have work
directly affecting granite countertops shall be present.
2. Contractor shall notify Owner, Architect and other attending parties minimum seven days prior to
time for conference.
3. Contractor shall record minutes of meeting and distribute copies of minutes to attending parties.
4. Approved shop drawings to be available for review at pre-installation conference.
1.04
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver to Project after building is enclosed, finished and ready for countertop installation.
B. Handle material to prevent damage, and repair-damaged items to original and new condition. Replace
damaged items which cannot be repaired to original and new condition.

COORDINATION
A. Coordinate sizes and locations of framing, blocking, furring, reinforcements, and other related units of
work specified in other Section to ensure that granite countertops can be supported and installed as
indicated.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01
SOLID SURFACING COUNTERTOPS
A. Solid Surfacing Lavatory Countertops: DuPont Polymers "Corian", Formica Corp. "Surell" or Nevamar
Corp. "Fountainhead", Wilsonart International; Div. of Premark International, Inc. "Gibraltar", or Avonite
Surfaces “Foundations”; homogeneous solid sheets of filled plastic resin complying with material and
performance requirements of ANSI Z124.3, Type 5 or Type 6, without precoated finish; 3/4-inch thick;
colors and patterns selected by Architect.
2.02
FABRICATION OF SOLID SURFACING COUNTERTOPS
A. Shop fabricate to field measured sizes.
B. Make cutouts for lavatories, plumbing fixtures, and toilet accessories using either templates or physical
samples of items to be used.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01
INSTALLATION
A. Solid Surfacing Countertops: Apply plywood underlayment to countertop framing, adhere solid surfacing
countertop with adhesive in compliance with manufacturerUs printed instructions. Form countertops and
splash of one piece with rigid cove support. Seal joints and lavatory bowl rim with mildew-resistant
silicone sealant.
1. Field Joints in Countertops: More than 48-inches apart and shall not occur within 48-inches of the
end of any top.
a. Locate counter butt joints minimum 2U-0" from sink cutouts.
