TERM Three
2013
Week Six
Sept 02 – Sept 06
Second Preliminary Senior Examinations, Weeks 7 & 8, Friday, 13 – Friday, 20
September
Be aware that senior students will be sitting examinations from Friday next week
and for the whole of week 8.
It is imperative that all of our senior students adopt a strategic approach to their
preparation for the externally assessed standards to be examined in November.
Firstly, each student needs to have a carefully planned approach to securing the
required number of credits (internally or externally assessed) needed to pass their
Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 National Certificate.
Monday 2 Sept – Saturday 7 Sept
Secondly, in relation to Course (or Subject) Endorsement students need to gain
three externally assessed Excellence or Merit-level credits among the 14 credits
required for that subject to achieve an Excellence or Merit Course Endorsement.
Week Seven
Sept 09 – Sept 13
(Remember that Certificate Endorsement (as opposed to Course Endorsement)
requires 50 credits at the level of Excellence in order to attain an Excellence
Certificate and 50 credits at the level of Merit or Excellence in order to attain a
Merit Certificate.)

The key point is that all students need to have a planned approach to passing their
Level Certificate and to gaining a Certificate or Course Endorsement. At any point
between now and the November external examinations parents should take the
opportunity to converse with students concerning their Record of Learning and
establish progress to date in relation to the three kinds of certification referred to
above. Later this week and again in the last week of term parents will be emailed
their student’s updated Record of Learning which should be used as the data base
for reviewing progress and, if necessary, adjusting plans.
Any queries about these matters should be directed to your house dean (for Year
11), the Year 12 academic director, Kay Wallace, or the Year 13 academic director,
Amy Dennis.
New School Developments
We have been informed that we may still be a week or two away from being
informed by the Ministry of Education about the successful design and build
consortium to be assigned the contract for the design of the new school.
We are currently in the process of determining the nature of consultation with our
key stakeholder groups so that we are better able to understand aspirations for the
new school. Your feedback is sought about the best way to engage you in the
consultation process whether this be through evening workshops or online
channels. Certainly, there is a commitment on the part of the trustees and the
senior managers to benefit from the expertise within the community in key areas
such as modern learning environments, sustainability and the school-community
interface.
Let us know your thoughts by using the dedicated email for the project:

Year 12 Product Developers!
Our year 12 group has been working busily on developing a product for Kiwi ice-cream. As their
project comes to a close they had the opportunity to visit the Kiwi Ice-cream factory and discuss their
product ideas with real food technologists. We hope to select a winning product in term 3.
Examples of the stiff competition to produce the winning product entry
Well done to our international students who took on the big task of opening the coffee shop to the
school. They had a very successful day and proved to themselves that they are capable of making
delicious-tasting barista coffee. We hope they go back to Germany and Austria and continue to make
coffee as good as New Zealand does!

Homestay Families Needed for Term 4
International Department
Do you have a spare room in the house? Would you like to host an international student?
We have students starting in Term 4 who will arrive approximately on 10th October. Some are short
term, leaving early December, but some are long term, staying over Christmas/New Year. If you live
close to the school and would like to host one of these students, please let me know your preference.
If you would like to know more, please email Celia at internationaloffice@wsc.school.nz or ring
815 6730 ext 752.
From the Yr 13 Academic Director
Term 3 is a vital time for our year 13 students. The main focus in class is completion of the final
internal assessments, and revision for the upcoming practice examinations being held at the end of
week 7 and in week 8.
Many parents ask how they can best assist their child in the preparation for examinations. Education
Counts. Every day a student is not at school is a day they are not learning. Over time, patterns of
non-attendance can place students at risk of poor achievement. As well as attendance, parents can
also assist by asking about due dates of assessments, providing a suitable study environment, and
ensuring the student comes to school after a good night‟s sleep.
For students or families who are not sure how to study, your teachers are a valuable source of
information. You can also use the studyit website (http://www.studyit.org.nz/) which has excellent
information and encouragement for exams.
Planning is underway for the Leavers Dinner, an event for families to celebrate Yr 13 graduation from
secondary school. Details regarding this and leavers‟ clothing will be available in the next newsletter.
Happy studying

Philosophy
New
Pasifika
Philosophy
Awards
Pasifika Prizegiving at the end of 2012 marked the first time that the Pasifika Philosophy Awards
were presented. Adele Fruean (top right) was the first recipient of the Senior Pasifika Philosophy
Award. Adele had taken Philosophy for the first time in Year 13 and chose Marxism and Feminism
as the themes for her two pieces of independent research. She made full use of the Learning Centre
throughout the year, sought and acted on advice, and organised her own research timeframes
effectively. Jessop Swan (top left and bottom right) took the Junior Pasifika Philosophy Award for his
enthusiasm, grasp of philosophical concepts and discussion skills. The senior award is a piece of
Samoan tapa, and the junior award a piece from Fiji.
The Pasifika Philosophy Awards complete a set of Philosophy Awards built around the Senior Woods
Shield, and Junior Woods Cup. The cup and shield, and their sister awards, are presented for
endeavour in Philosophy. They are given to the students who most effectively integrate their
philosophical understanding into their wider thinking, and make connections across subject areas.
In 2012 the Junior Woods Cup was presented to Oscar Coltman (bottom centre) for exceptional and
insightful work throughout the year. Rae Ward-Lerew was awarded the Senior Woods Shield. Rae
scored the second highest mark nationally in the Waikato University philosophy paper. She also
completed a remarkable and highly original piece of research into Pantheism and Animism, their
relationship to contemporary society, colonialism and green politics.
The Junior Rumaki Philosophy award was presented to Jesse Williams (bottom left). Jesse
contributed to discussions throughout the year with insightful and relevant comments; he was always
open to developing his own thinking. Tahana Tippett was awarded the Senior Rumaki Philosophy
Award. Tahana completed two pieces of high quality research, one into Feminism and the other into
Maori Politics. He even set up and used an interview with then Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples.
Philosophy Guest Speakers
This Year a number of guest speakers has come in to discuss and work with our students. The
students would like to thank them for giving up their time and opening themselves up to questioning.
In Term 1 Sally from the LibertariNZ party gave a very clear account of the Libertarian political
position, which opened up intense discussion that carried on after the lesson and all the way through
break. Graeme Hight from the Balmoral Baptist church also came in to discuss ethical issues around
birth with the Year 13s. Graeme was incredibly sensitive, insightful and open and many Year 13
students quoted him in their NCEA assessment.
In Term 2 our in-house experts were generous with their time. Principal Ken Havill spent a whole
lesson discussing a fictional student disciplinary scenario with the Year 12s. They were studying the
philosophy of punishment and went on to apply it to the NZ prison system. Ex-student Jay Telfer also
gave a detailed talk on the Just War Theory from an Islamic perspective. The sophistication and
precision of Jay‟s presentation and his interaction with the Year 11 class were impressive. Many
students used the information and understanding that Jay gave them in their NCEA assessments
later in the term.
Girls Take the Initiative in Philosophy
Finally, the investigation by the Year 11 class into the ideas of philosopher Peter Singer saw a great
variety of people interviewed and questioned. Singer is outspoken on redefining „Human Rights‟ as
„Person Rights‟. „Persons‟, according to Singer, can include some animals, but might exclude some
humans. One group of girls (Eva Murphy, Holly Parker, Julia Gilbert and Pearl Little) had the
imagination to set up an off site interview at an Auckland Brain Injury centre. If there were an award
for most impressive use of initiative in Philosophy, these girls would have won it!
Paul Alford - HOD Philosophy
Auckland City Mission Appeal – Thank You
Thank you to all of you who contributed items, time and energy to the Auckland City Mission Appeal
last term. As a school we collected over 500 items, and the driver who collected them was both
surprised and delighted by the volume.
Kapura House organised a shoestring-budget menu competition to raise awareness of why the City
Mission is so important to Auckland. The winners were rewarded with a lunch cooked by Paul Alford
and the Kapura House Leaders. The winners were EDK who enjoyed their hot curry meal after
senior exam week – although the heat made form member Sam Stenson turn a very bright red!
Thanks to Jennis Hayes from Food Tech for lending her expertise to the judging panel.
Moana House carried on the push for donations by organising an effective pyjama day which saw
many staff and students turn up for school in their nightwear. The PE department staff even came in
matching PJs.
In the Rumaki, Alice Heather had a systematic donation collection system, and staff and students
from all 5 houses joined in throughout the campaign. Again, thank you to all of you involved in
helping the City Mission.
English Department
The New Zealand Association of Teachers of English (NZATE) is currently running their annual
writing competition for junior students. This year they are asking for short stories of up to 500 words
that must include the line “I can‟t leave it alone.” Entries close on the 11th of September and there
are cash prizes up for grabs. English teachers have further information.
With the year 12 PE camp coming up in the last week of term, we have negotiated with the PE
department to use their exam slots to get students‟ writing portfolios (91101) completed prior to their
departure. We are grateful for the support of the PE department and thank Jarrod Dunn, HOD PE,
for helping us develop this solution. It is critical as the writing is only able to be completed in school
and we want term 4 to be all about revising for the external exam essays, rather than finishing off this
major internal assessment. We have also adjusted the deadlines for the final two personal
responses (91106) with response 5 now due Friday this week (6 September) and response 6 on
Friday of the first week of term 1 (18 October.) For more information on these standards, see
https://sites.google.com/a/wsc.school.nz/year-12-english/
With senior exams coming up in weeks 7 and 8, it‟s useful for you to know how you might support
your student in their preparation. Some ideas for your student at this early stage are:
Going through class notes for each of the two essay standards they will attempt (written and
visual) and organising them, adding further detail where possible
Comparing their notes with those of classmates to determine if there is anything missing, then
following this up with their teacher
Using class notes to make summaries that could become posters for around home. Post-it
notes with key ideas written on them can also be helpful, and they can be taken down once
the idea on the post-it has been committed to memory.
Making coloured flashcards to help remember evidence (e.g. quotes or film techniques)
Going back to a practice essay and reworking it, based on the feedback given on the first
attempt
Looking at old/sample exam papers on the NZQA website and completing timed practice
planning and essay writing, then getting feedback from your teacher
Checking out the resources on http://www.studyit.org.nz/ or working through revision books
from places like Whitcoulls. These resources have good generic tips but for text specific
resources, your teacher is always your best bet
Checking out the upcoming revision courses at Unitec http://www.unitec.ac.nz/unitec/stepupx/stepupx_home/stepupx_home.cfm
The English Department are also very grateful for the donation, by parent Katrina Duncan from
Auckland University Press, of a wide variety of poetry, fiction and biography by New Zealand
writers. Our students will find these resources very useful when completing their English
assessments in the future.

Maths Week
Week 3 this term we celebrated New Zealand Maths Week. The final event on Friday was the 2nd
annual Inter-house Mathex competition. Mathex is a fast- paced problem solving competition for
groups of students (in this case, house teams of one student from each year). Groups had to solve
the problems and one member had to get them checked by judges, and then complete the rest of the
course to get back to the team. This was always a mad dash. Congratulations to the teams earning
house points. Atea came in Third, and Kapura and Moana were joint champions.

Senior First XI wins the League!
Our Senior First XI finished the season with a 6-0 win over Glenfield College last Saturday to win the
Auckland Senior A3 League. This is a huge achievement for a young side which had been promoted
into the A3 league following the success of the 2012 team, and now have also won in 2013 to secure
further promotion into the A2 League for the 2014 season. After introducing a formal Western Springs
College Football Programme last year we are thrilled to have achieved back-to-back promotions and
wish to thank John Cunningham for his exceptional coaching and the school for their ongoing support
of the programme.
Congratulations to the whole squad for their commitment and hard work throughout the season to
make this happen:
Isaac Moffat-Young, Finn Cochran, George Monro, Fiachra Cullen, Morgan Pedlow, Taylor
Cunningham, Alexei Stoyanof, Noah Rudd, Caleb Chambers, Jack Coulter, Oscar Mahy, Colin
Bourke, Leo Drake-Rogers, Will Wallis, Orlando Kwok-Cameron, Jack Sedon, Sam Riddiford,
Korban Molloy-Parker.
Equestrian
Our equestrian team of Eliza Graham, Alexis Todd, Caitlin Wallis and Freiya Ware recently
competed at Woodhills, in the Secondary Schools Equestrian Cup. The Cup is a major event,
attracting over 200 riders. The Equestrian team eventually finished 24th out of 42 teams, which was
encouraging considering it was only their second event as a team. Our girls enjoyed the competition,
and hope to keep on improving over the next few tournaments. Thank you to Michael Snookes and
Tricia Ware for their support of the team.
RESULTS :
SHOWJUMP – Caitlin 1st and 10th, Eliza 7th and 2nd
SHOWHUNTER – Freiya completed both rounds, but did not finish in the top 10. Alexis had issues
with a new, „stubborn‟ pony and was eliminated in both her rounds.
Rugby
This season, four teams represented our school in the Auckland college rugby programme. A new
team, girls‟ 10-aside, was developed this year under the coaching of Panapa Paniora and Maki
Temu. Our girls had an encouraging season winning three games and finishing just outside the top
six. Congratulations to Laishon Albert Jones who has been selected in the Auckland Under-18 squad
and has been training in the Auckland 7s development programme.
Our three boys‟ teams had successful seasons. Our 6th grade team, hosting many newcomers, made
their semi-finals. This was a great result and can be put down to a wonderful management team. Our
4th grade and 1st XV each made a grand-final for the second consecutive year. However, for the
second consecutive year, both teams have disappointingly fallen short of winning a title. To make the
play-offs is a great team effort and we congratulate our coaches and managers for their expertise.
Hopefully next season, we will see all our teams taking that extra step to success…
Squash
After a successful season where two of our six teams won their grades and our senior boys‟ team
finish runner-up at the Auckland Squash Championships, the season ended last week with the
Annual Springs Squash Tournament. The event, held at Herne Bay Squash Centre was run over two
days and featured several games of high quality. Our juniors are showing great development which
augers well for the future of the sport.
Acknowledgement goes to Murray Denby, Jenny Jones and the parents who supported this season‟s
squash programme. Murray and Jenny have been the cornerstone of the school‟s programme and it
is great to see their work starting to pay dividends.

JUNIOR BOYS – Max Chambers
Term Four Sport Registrations
As our winter sports slowly grinds to a halt, we now prepare for the summer sports programme in
term four. Last week we started accepting interest in the following sports: Cricket, Tennis, Touch,
Volleyball and Waterpolo. New sports to be introduced for Term 4 are: Aussie Rules, Handball, Boys‟
and Girls‟ Rugby 7s. We anticipate a lot of interest to be shown in all the sports codes. Registrations
will close off on September 10.
Parents interested in coaching, or managing a sports team should e-mail

Half way through Term 3 and it is a busy time in all avenues of the Arts. It is a time for theatre with
school productions in Y12 and Y13 Drama and Dance, musical performances and competition.
The Drama Department have had great success with Y13/12 productions The Laramie Project (1217 August 2013) and also The Stationary Y12 Poetry Trip in Week 5. Next week is the Dance
Department showcase Dance Your Heart Out.
Congratulations to our Chamber Orchestra for their efforts at the KBB Festival and for the
commendation of excellent performance that they received.
In Art History Y12 and Y13‟s have been trekking through culture in the Auckland art scene with visits
to local artist studio spaces and galleries. They have been fortunate enough to have had insightful
talks and seen outstanding work in and out of context which has enriched minds for study and
assessment.
Coming up! Auditions are being held for the annual WSC Talent Quest at the end of Term! Any
interest in entering must go to Margaret Robertson – HOD Music.

DRAMA
As we are drawing nearer to the end of the year, the Drama Students are just finishing up with their
performances. The Year 13‟s Laramie Project was a success! With weeks and weeks of rehearsal
time the students were able to deliver a stellar show passing on the all-important message of
Matthew Shepard to the audience; a message of acceptance. A big thank you goes out to all the
parents who helped out with the show, the students, the PAT team and of course, Mr Barnaby
James - the director of the show! Sadly, the Year 12‟s enthralling play about a classroom reading
of „The Ancient Mariner‟ also draws to a close this Saturday the 31st. The Stationary Year 12 Poetry
Trip exhibits some of the many great acting talents we have at this school. The play deals with each
pupil‟s feelings on many matters such as, marriage, self-image and childhood memories. And to this
too, we say a big thank you again to every parent who helped out with the production, the
students, the PAT team and the lovely Ms Beth Kayes – the director.
Arts Leader – Phodiso Dintwe
Senior dance students have been working furiously towards our DANCE YOUR HEART OUT which
is being showcased Week 6 Thursday and Friday in TAPAC theatre. Tickets are available from the
TAPAC webpage: http://www.tapac.org.nz/events-dance_your_heart_out-29
Springs Ensemble, our School Chamber Orchestra, competed at the annual KBB band and
Orchestra Festival last week.
An energetic group of 22 students managed to keep their instruments out of the pouring rain and
performed with great energy. We were rewarded with a commendation from the judges that was
presented at the prizegiving in the Town Hall.
Our performance of Haydn‟s Toy Symphony had the audience smiling as our soloists on penny
whistle, toy trumpet, triangle, rattle and water bird nearly stole the show. There were many comments
about how positive WSC students were at the event and how much they seemed to be enjoying
making music…of course! The judges made special mention of Noah Rudd‟s elegant oboe playing.
Thanks to Vigdis for running this group with such enthusiasm and to our parent supporters who
formed our own paparazzi on the day!

Extended Greetings
With so much work to get through for the Visual Art classes, it is great to see a number of students
taking the initiative to utilise their non-class time to come into the Art rooms and complete their work .
As a practical subject, the student‟s ability to manage self and maintain consistent work habits
reflects a maturity that will enable them to develop their art making to a higher level of conceptual
resolution.
The recent Y10 selection assemblies were an opportunity for Juniors to view and hear about the
variety of exciting pathways on offer at the Senior levels. Thanks to Peter Coxon and Tori Young for
their insightful power point presentation – championing the important role of the Visual Arts is a vital
and integral component of all advanced societies and there are a number of websites and providers
engaged in aligning and linking vocational pathways (NCEA Visual Arts will be online in 2014). The
course booklets are on line for further reading, alternatively students can ask direct questions to the
HOD or TIC of the subject area of interest.
The EOTC this term was the successful half day trips with the senior Art History students – these
were designed to create confidence and expose students to a variety of Art forms and established
practise. The nurturing of Art History is also being developed in the Junior school, with Kirsty Britton
and Tori Young taking the Y10 classes to the Auckland Art Gallery next term to build their
understanding of Art in context towards achieving credits for Level 1 Art History standard.
Finally, congratulations to Chervelle Long, who received a well-deserved Merit certificate in the
recent Lopdell House student exhibition held at UNITEC.
Also, Good luck to the Senior students who should be working hard to complete their art for the
external boards – the timeline for handing in for the Level 1, 2 and 3 is as follows;
LEVEL 1 boards due Term 4 Week 1 Friday (E3)
LEVEL 2 boards due Term 4 Week 2 Friday (E3)
LEVEL 3 boards due Term 4 Week 3 Thursday (for prizegiving display in the Library)

Subject Selection for Year 11 & 12 Senior Students
At a recent Year 11/12 assembly, students were encouraged to consider a number of factors when
choosing subjects for 2014 and beyond. Firstly, they should aim to meet prerequisites of the next
level of their present subjects. They need to plan a balanced subject workload for internal and
external assessments. Subject choices need to be based on fact rather than opinion of others or
friends‟ subject choices. Sometimes there is a need to consider plans for the year after next due to
subject prerequisites at school and tertiary institutions.
Year 12s may need to consider the importance of grade quality, especially if entering competitive
university courses such as those at Auckland University. Please note that the Table A AND Table B
requirement only applies to 3 degrees. (BArch, BNurs and BHSc at Auckland Uni). Most degrees
state Table A OR Table B. Please refer to the link here for information about Auckland University.
http://www.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/ae-national-certificate-of-educational-achievement.
At a Year 12 assembly, attention was drawn to new University Entrance requirements in 2014
which have 3, L3 university approved subjects with at least 14 credits AND Level 3 NCEA with L2
literacy and L1 numeracy http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/about-us/news/quals-review-guidelines-update-2/
(University Approved updated subject list is here http://goo.gl/hLBMeP)
Students should also refer to the http://www.careers.govt.nz/jobs/ website under "How to Enter the
Job" then "Secondary Education" to check subjects needed for different jobs. This careful research
helps them to make informed decisions. Please pay close attention to the job market if job
security/keeping a job is important to you. How easy is it to get a job in your field of work? Click here
to find out the likelihood of getting a job http://www.dol.govt.nz/publications/lmr/occupationaloutlook/index.asp. You can look up the "Job Opportunities" in the Careers website too. Example
here,
http://www.careers.govt.nz/jobs/architectural-technical-design/architect/job-opportunities
However,
the future job outlook can sometimes change for better or worse depending on supply/demand.
If there is doubt about subjects needed for future plans then look at:
1. Subject planner/guide, beneath the coursebook on the WSC Website,
http://www.westernsprings.school.nz/Courses_of_Study/WSC_Subject_Planner_2014.pdf
2. Careers website www.careerhttp://www.careers.govt.nz/jobs/
3. Talk to Deans and Careers staff.
Coursebook link here http://www.westernsprings.school.nz/Courses_of_Study.html
There is one option sheet for choosing subjects. Choose carefully the first time (no second
option choice sheet).
The Senior Parent Meetings on the Thursday of week 9 which will provide a final opportunity for
parents/students to discuss subject choices with teachers. The subject selection sheets will be
emailed home in Week 8 (during exams) and are due back in week 9. Option sheets will be available
at reception for students and parents to fill in if they don't have them.

Shark Week is Coming to Western Springs College!
From the 2nd of September up until the 6th, Western Springs College is holding our very own Shark
Week to encourage shark conservation and appreciation, as well as bring awareness of the barbaric
practice of shark finning.
Shark finning is the brutal practice of catching sharks and slicing off their fins, in most cases while the
shark is still alive. The dying shark is then thrown overboard where it will either bleed to death, drown
through its inability to move, or be eaten alive by other predators. In each case, the shark is
neglected, left to die a slow and excruciatingly painful death.
An estimated 100 million sharks are slaughtered worldwide each year for their fins; this is
approximately 180.2 sharks killed each minute. Why? So the Asian culinary world can serve the
delicacy shark fin soup.
Not only does New Zealand participate in the barbaric practice, New Zealand is one of the top 15
distributors of shark fins in the world, competing with Spain, Taiwan, and Singapore.
Throughout Shark Week we will be holding several events, including a day dedicated to decorating
cardboard fins to show visual support for the illegalisation of shark finning in New Zealand. These fins
will be passed on to the New Zealand Shark Alliance and displayed on the steps of Parliament in
September!
On Wednesday the 4th, a volunteer from the global green movement the Sea Shepherd
Conservation Society will be coming in to talk about shark finning in New Zealand!
On Friday the 6th, we will be holding a yummy marine-themed bake sale, with the profits of the week
being donated to Sea Shepherd New Zealand which continues to do amazing work for the
conservation of our marine environment!
There will also be a daily quiz in which the winner will gain a free double pass to Dreamweaver
Dolphin Charters!
More details about the events will be in the notices next week!
Thank you everyone for the support!"
