Whangarei Campus
NorthTec’s main campus
is located in the city of
Whangarei, New Zealand.
Whangarei, Northland’s largest centre, lives up to its name of
‘cherished harbour’ as you sit at one of its quayside cafes and
restaurants watching the many international yachts moored in the
Town Basin marina. Or you could head out to the seemingly endless
beaches of the Tutukaka coast on the Pacific for a leisurely cruise
taking in the breath-taking seascapes, or explore the Poor Knights
marine reserve, one of the world’s top 10 dive sports.
Whangarei’s sub-tropical climate, stunning coastline, relaxed
lifestyle and relatively low cost of living have attracted a diverse
group of people from around the world to add to its population
of around 70,000. You will hear many languages spoken - from
German, Dutch and French, to Japanese, Mandarin, Hindi or Punjabi
while sampling the fresh local produce at the Saturday market or
admiring the wares at the arts and crafts fairs.
20
Why choose Whangarei?
Whangarei can provide you
with real career choices and
opportunities. You can achieve
balance between studies and work.
Whangarei is only a 2 hour drive from Auckland, with a
regular bus service providing a safe and cost-effective
link between the two cities.
Skilled Migrants who apply for residence, and have a
job offer outside Auckland, get a boost in bonus points
(from 10 -30 points).
•
The cost of living in Whangarei is much lower than in
Auckland or other major cities.
•
•
As a smaller city, Whangarei is compact enough to make it
relatively easy to get around by walking, cycling or using a
local bus service. There is also considerably less traffic on the
roads.
The warm Northland climate means lower heating costs over
the winter, while it’s also ideal for many outdoor activities
throughout the year.
•
Entrepreneurs planning to set up businesses in the regions
get double points (from 20-4 points) under the Entrepreneurs
Work Visa.
Whangarei has a vibrant city life with a good variety of retail
outlets, restaurants, bars and night clubs, as well as an
active international community from Europe, the US and
Canada, Asia and the Middle East.
•
A good variety of accommodation is available to international
students in Whangarei. This ranges from hostels and rental
flats, to homestays with local families – an excellent way to
enhance your English skills and experience the New Zealand
way of life.

Accommodation
NorthTec is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students administered by New Zealand
Qualifications Authority (NZQA). All our students will be well informed, supported and cared for in accordance with the Code.
Finding the right accommodations can be a difficult so please provide us with at least two weeks’ notice before you leave
your country. We are happy to provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation and recommend the following options.
Homestay
Flatting
Living with a local homestay family is a great way of experiencing the
Kiwi lifestyle and practising your English on a daily basis.
Many NorthTec international students live in shared accommodation
(a ‘flat’) that they rent privately from local landlords. Flatmates can be
other students, friends or strangers.
You and your flatmates will have to organise your own furniture, pay
the power, water, internet and any other bills, prepare your own meals,
do your own laundry, and maintain the rental agreement. We only
recommend flatting for responsible, mature students with good English
and strong independent living skills, e.g. cooking, cleaning, and
budgeting. The NorthTec International team in Whangarei has access
to blocks of fully furnished apartments, flats and dorm rooms with no
letting fee and bond, through some landlords we work with as preferred
suppliers.
You’ll have your own private fully-furnished room and all meals provided
so it also allows you to concentrate on your studies. Students under
the age of 18 years must stay in supervised accommodations. If they
aren’t living with their parents or don’t have a designated caregiver
nominated by them, they must therefore stay in a NorthTec-approved
homestay. All our homestays are carefully selected in accordance
with the Code of Practice, fully police vetted, inspected, trained and
supported by NorthTec. Homestay students are also supported by airport
pick-up, 24/7 emergency contact number and on-going monitoring.
Hostel
Staying at hostel or backpackers is another good option for when you
first arrive in New Zealand or if you come for a shorter course. You can
usually have a choice of a single or shared room and sometimes even
have your meals provided. The hostel charge can be on a daily basis
from NZ$25 or weekly from NZ$170.

Helping you to succeed
The Student Success team is here to help you on your journey, from enrolment to graduation. We have the knowledge and
expertise to guide you through issues that may impact on your study and to help you make the most of your time at NorthTec. We
are committed to your achievement and success and aim to support you on your learning journey.
Student advice and support
Cross Credits
We strive to provide information and support to students on a range
of issues from housing and hardship problems, to money issues and
student complaints. We have a wide network of stakeholders in the local
community so we can work with you and community agencies to assist
you in addressing any challenges or barriers which may arise.
Students may already have some knowledge or skills that can be
recognised as part of their intended study. This may take a number of
different forms including workplace training, other tertiary level study, life
experience or voluntary work. Students will be asked to provide details of
such things that they would like to be considered as credit towards their
intended programme of study in their application.
Learning assistance
We support students to develop skills to become more effective learners.
We can help identify the gaps in your learning and suggest strategies to
enhance studying. These could be in areas such as time management,
essay writing, referencing or memorising information for exams. We have
a range of support available for students in this area.
Counselling service
There are times in all our lives when we encounter personal problems or
life crises. When you are struggling with dealing with these, your studies
will be affected. To help you resolve these worries as quickly as possible,
NorthTec students have free 24-hour access to a counselling service
provided by Vitae, a professional company with a team of independent
counsellors and psychologists throughout New Zealand.
Recognition of Prior Learning
(RPL)
Students who have attained knowledge and skills through work or life
experience are encouraged to enquire about Recognition of Prior Learning
(RPL). Students must demonstrate their prior learning in relation to the
learning outcomes of each individual course. Students will be advised
about how to prepare a portfolio that demonstrates they have met the
learning outcomes of the course. An attestation from an independent
person that this learning occurred in the work place or through other
experience, is also required. Students will need a full course outline with
details of the learning outcomes before preparing their portfolio. Please
contact the international office via email (international@northtec.ac.nz)
for an application form and full course details.
