A BOLD NEW VISION
Over the last year, UMass Memorial Health Care, Inc. and the University of Massachusetts Medical
School have embarked on a new era, its foundation firmly rooted in the partnership between the two
institutions, and with you, our loyal and committed donors. With your support, we are fulfilling our
mission to advance the health and well-being of the people of the commonwealth and the world
through pioneering advances in education, research and health care delivery.
The coming together of new leadership at UMass Medical School, recognized success under the
leadership at UMass Memorial Health Care and the arrival of what is being defined as the “life sciences
moment” have energized our institutions to acknowledge and capitalize upon our strengths and forge a
future that will transform the lives of you and your family, our community and the world.
When we, as leaders, first sat down this year to articulate our strategic direction, we did so knowing that
UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care had matured into one of the nation’s leading
academic health sciences centers. It is a designation you will hear and see frequently in the coming
months as we chart our course to become one of the best such centers in the world. In terms of
facilities and programs, an academic health sciences center comprises a medical school; one or more
other health professional schools; and teaching hospitals or health systems that provide patient care.
But it is the impact of these combined resources that truly defines us as an academic health sciences
center—in offering comprehensive, leading-edge care; in training the health care providers and
pioneering researchers of the future; in generating original ideas that lead to transformational changes
in treatments and cures for disease; in fueling both the regional and global economy through jobs and
innovation; and finally, in meeting the most basic and critical needs of our local community.
We are proud to take our place as an academic health sciences center of distinction—a position we
would not have been able to reach as quickly as we have in our young history without your partnership
and generosity. We are excited about the trajectory we are on, shaped by our global leadership in basic
research, our nationally recognized patient care and our outstanding training of critically needed health
care professionals. We are about to step into the future with a bold new vision that builds upon what
we have achieved and transforms the practice of medicine—how we deliver health care, train its
practitioners, translate discovery into cures, perform at the highest levels and, ultimately, change the
world. We invite you to join with us, as together, we chart our future course.

DESIGN
A Paxton man survives a massive heart attack and walks out of the hospital three days later—because
paramedics had the training and the technology to connect enroute to cardiac specialists at UMass Memorial
Medical Center, who were ready and waiting to unblock his clogged artery as soon as he arrived.
World-renowned scientists, attracted by an environment of success that fosters Noble Prize-winning research
and a culture of collaboration, flock to the University of Massachusetts Medical School because they believe
that, together, we can do more to relieve suffering and cure disease.
Excellently trained graduates of the School of Medicine, rated as a top 10 percent primary care teaching
medical school, are bringing critically needed care to the commonwealth and the nation.
A BOLD NEW VISION
Your generosity has helped to build a foundation
of achievement that includes outstanding medical
professionals, superior facilities and advanced
treatments driven by leading-edge research.
Our academic health sciences center has become a
magnet for distinguished and talented professionals.
Our growing reputation and dynamic environment
have attracted practitioners who include some of the
country’s most experienced and respected physicians:
orthopedic specialists like David C. Ayers, MD, whose
team of surgeons has created a nationally recognized
Orthopedic Center of Excellence; heart and vascular
specialists like Robert A. Phillips, MD, John R. Keaney,
MD, and Lynn H. Harrison, MD, whose focused team
approach to quality care has transformed our Heart and
Vascular Center of Excellence into one of the best
in the country for treating heart attack patients;
neurologists like Robert H. Brown, MD, an
internationally known researcher and physician who
is leading the quest to cure neuromuscular diseases like
ALS. The groundbreaking discoveries in our research
laboratories, especially the Nobel Prize-winning work
of Craig C. Mello, PhD, and the research of Howard

Hughes Medical Investigator Phillip D. Zamore,
PhD, another international leader in RNAi science,
have made UMass Medical School a compelling place
for other renowned RNA scientists. Victor R.
Ambros, PhD, a National Academy of Sciences
member and recipient of the 2008 Lasker Award,
whose discovery of microRNAs has opened a dramatic new world of investigation into developmental
biology, and Melissa J. Moore, PhD, a fellow HHMI
Investigator and an expert in pre-messenger and
messenger RNA metabolism, have joined us and
strengthened our team into the global leader in RNA.
Our investment in talent has been complemented,
with your assistance, by the creation of facilities and
the implementation of the latest technologies that
support these extraordinary individuals and enhance
the care we are able to provide to the community.
The Duddie Massad Emergency and Trauma Center,
the only Level 1 Adult and Pediatric trauma center
in the region, is the site of nearly a quarter of a
million visits and lifesaving emergency care; our new
operating rooms, including cardiac surgery suites,
and our forthcoming Heart Hospital, are bringing
the latest in technology to our patients; our
award-winning eICU, ranked number one in the
electronic ICU Quality Consortium, is saving lives with
its ability to recognize subtle changes in condition and
provide immediate intervention; our newly renovated,
dedicated rheumatology space on the Memorial campus
offers an ideal venue for the comprehensive care of
patients with rheumatic diseases as well as close proximity
to the Orthopedics Department; a new ambulatory care
center in Milford, providing general surgery, obstetrics
and gynecology, orthopedics and sports medicine, reflects
our strong, ongoing commitment to provide access to
high-quality medical care and services to the wider
community that depends on us for tertiary care; and

the horizon are more facilities poised to support our
threefold mission of care, discovery and education. The
Advanced Center for Clinical Education and Sciences,
or ACCES, will greatly enhance the access of our
community to health care that is integrated with the
groundbreaking discoveries of our research scientists
and the training of Massachusetts physicians. This
building will be a unique merger of patient care and
research on every floor, as one example of how our
academic health sciences center is aligning around the
centers of excellence in cardiovascular disease, cancer,
musculoskeletal diseases and diabetes.
In addition, as a result of the Governor’s Life Sciences
Initiative, we will advance the science and technology of
Dr. Mello’s discovery, RNAi, as well as stem cell therapy
and gene therapy for the benefit of our patients and
those around the commonwealth. The Advanced
Therapeutics Cluster, a major new initiative that will
dramatically expand research efforts and focus some of
the best minds in the world on creating new therapies
for many debilitating diseases, will be housed in a new
campus facility to be constructed on the UMass
Medical School campus. The Center will have three
integrated research programs: the Gene Therapy Center,
the RNA interference (RNAi) Therapeutics Center
and the Center for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative
Medicine.
This is a unique moment for our academic health
sciences center. We have made the commitment to take
the discoveries emerging from our laboratories to the
bedside, translating them into treatments for patients
with diseases that would otherwise be untreatable. On
We have come far in 40 years—award-winning
programs, nationally and internationally recognized
physicians and scientists, state-of-the-art facilities all
advancing the health and well-being of people in our
local and wider communities. We are now ready to take
our achievements to a level of excellence that will
transform the practice of medicine. Our moment has
arrived and the future is ours to design. Thank you for
providing the foundation from which that future will
emerge.

support this inaugural lecture with your generous gifts.
Number One in State
for Surviving a Heart Attack
UMass Memorial Medical Center ranks number one in
Massachusetts and number two in the United States for
surviving a heart attack. The Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS) reports that UMass Memorial is
one of just nine hospitals in the nation statistically far
superior than the national average. “Our focus is on
improving quality,” said John Keaney, MD, chief of
Cardiovascular Medicine. “This report is proof positive that
our processes are sound and robust and we are among the
best in the country.” Robert Phillips, MD, medical director,
Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence, added, “Our
outstanding performance in AMI mortality is a reflection of
our program’s top priority of providing superior patient
outcomes and quality.”
Nurse Anesthetist Earns
Guinness Book Recognition
Jeanne Stawiecki, a 57-year-old nurse anesthetist at UMass
Memorial Medical Center, was entered in the Guinness Book
of World Records this year as the first woman in the world to
complete the climb of the “Seven Summits,” the highest
mountain on each continent. She also achieved the fastest
aggregate time for a woman to complete marathons on all
seven continents. Ms. Stawiecki, once a two-pack-a-day
smoker, accomplished both feats at age 56. She is writing a
book on her many personal difficulties and obstacles, hoping
to inspire other women to take risks and overcome barriers.

Fulfilling the Need for Advanced
Practice Nurses
New this year in the Graduate School of Nursing is the
Doctor of Nursing Practice Program (DNP). The DNP
program admits students with a master’s degree in nursing
as a nurse practitioner. It is designed to prepare graduates in
advanced practice nursing specialties for careers in clinical
practice with diverse populations, leadership in healthcare
systems, and clinical nursing education in professional
nursing programs.
Preparing for Disaster Response
A radiation kit with a Geiger counter, shelves of hazmat
suits in black gym bags, white triage bibs with job titles in
big black, equipment for all kinds of hazards within easy
reach. If it sounds like we’re preparing for the worst, we are.
In July 2009, the UMass Medical School and UMass
Memorial Medical Center will unite in teaching disastermanagement knowledge to future leaders in this field
with the implementation of a disaster medicine fellowship.
Hurricane Katrina floods, California wildfires, 9-11, tsunamis
—they all brought lessons on the need to prepare a
comprehensive disaster-management program to cope
with mass casualties. Already, 11 Central Massachusetts
hospitals, serving people in 74 communities, meet monthly
to coordinate best practices in preparation for mass
disasters. So despite the crisis, once all of the key personnel
know their roles, they will react accordingly. Ultimately,
the idea is to have a plan that activates automatically
and simultaneously.
Serving Others Outside the Lab
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS)
students spend days and nights in the classrooms and labs
at UMass Medical School, but they also dedicate themselves
to making a difference in the Worcester Community. As
part of the GSBS Cares program, students volunteer their
time and talents to local groups that serve Worcester area
residents. This summer, they put their carpentry, electrical

help build a duplex for two families. The students also
participate in Thanksgiving food drives and serve as mentors
to students in area schools.
Crossing Borders for Medical Training
For 40 students of the School of Medicine class of 2011, this
summer was a time for broadening their medical education
through global perspective. These students traveled to 18
countries, including Nicaragua, Brazil, Ghana, Honduras and
the Dominican Republic, for language and cultural immersion
as well as to visit clinical settings, assist with public health
projects and shadow physicians. The goal of these international programs is for students to develop linguistic and
cultural skills that they can bring back to underserved and
immigrant populations in Massachusetts, says Michael
Godkin, PhD, professor of family medicine and community
health and medicine, and director of the Pathway on Serving
Multicultural and Undeserved Populations program. This
year, 25 students benefited from the generosity of University
of Massachusetts Trustee Ruben King-Shaw, who funded
scholarships to help cover their travel expenses.

MESSAGE
Mary
FROM THE
CHAIR
C. DeFeudis
Having served my first year as chair of the UMass Memorial Foundation
Board of Directors, I feel gratified by the many thoughtful people who make our
organization work – and I find myself reflecting on a saying from long ago:
I will never pass this way again, so any good that I may do,
or anyone I can help, let me do it now, for I will not pass this way again.
I give thought to this because no matter where you go, or whatever may happen
in your lives, you have made an enormous difference in our community and in
the world. I think of each of you – all of our friends and investors – as people
who seize the opportunity to help now – to help today. As I reviewed the lists of
our donors in this report and absorbed the generosity of your gifts, in both sum
and spirit, I thought how inadequate it seems to simply say thank you.
Yd iof uf e rheanv ce e mi an d eo ua rn ce on mo rmmuonui st y
With each name, I saw how you had a hand in benefitting the common good.
Your fingerprints are on so many efforts under way in our hospitals, research
laboratories and classrooms. You have left your mark on the new and wonderfully
talented doctors who are attracted to practicing medicine here. You have helped
to build and expand facilities – classrooms and laboratories – where the miracles
we all hope and pray for, are in fact, miracles in progress. You have supported the
comprehensive needs of children and their families at the UMass Memorial
Children’s Medical Center, and especially the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. Your
gifts have helped console people who are in need of comfort and compassionate
support during the end of life process through our growing hospice services.
We needed you and you were there. You did not “pass this way” without
stopping to assure you made a difference. You did not pass this way without
helping to change lives for the better. You did not pass this way without pausing
to give from your hearts.
I thank you always for your generosity, but most importantly, for the good
you do for others.

Continuing a legacy of giving to UMass Memorial
Medical Center and the Community
“It is often said that people like to give to successful endeavors. John O’Brien, by his
innovative leadership at UMass Memorial Health Care, has created areas of excellence,
resulting in outstanding success in fields such as heart and vascular, orthopedics and
cancer. This approach to problem solving has created opportunities for concentrated
giving to make a difference.
“Myles and I have had a long association with UMass Memorial. We try to focus our
giving in broad areas that help many people and purposes. We understand that health
care excellence means new equipment, new services and constantly improved patient
care, and this is needed on a continuous basis. We are proud to have UMass Memorial
as part of our community so community members can depend upon quality services
when the unexpected might happen.”

Supporting the Miracle of Life at NICU
The UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center touched the Carroll family in a way that
Brian and June Carroll will not forget. Nine years ago, their son Brendan was born premature,
weighing 1 ½ pounds and requiring life-saving medical care around the clock. The fragile infant
stayed in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for five months, while his parents alternated
in staying by his side. Parental participation is encouraged at NICU as an important element of
infant recovery. Finally, Brendan “graduated” from NICU a six-pound healthy little boy and
went home to join his brothers, Tommy and Keith. Brian Carroll has been on the run (literally)
ever since, and June Carroll volunteers her time weekly at NICU, supporting other families
going through similar experiences. Mr. Carroll formed Brendan’s Buddies, a group that runs
marathons and Iron Man triathlons nationally to raise funds for NICU. More than $500,000
has been raised during 25 races to expand and enrich services. “Brendan grew into a
9-year-old boy because of the medical staff, the nursing care and the facilities and services
at Children’s Medical Center,” says Mr. Carroll. “We can’t do enough to share his miracle of
life with other families who are experiencing the same.”

Jeanne Curtis
“We all have a responsibility to share”
When Jeanne Curtis was hospitalized at UMass Memorial Medical Center last spring,
she gained firsthand experience that the hospital’s hallmark of excellence in patient
care was not just a slogan – it was the standard. “I had wonderful care. I saw how
attentive the staff was to other patients, too, so I believe the care I received was the
standard level of performance,” says Mrs. Curtis. It meant a lot, she says, to see how
much difference the contributions of supporters have made. Upgrades in many
facilities are “visible and important.” Looking back at some earlier days, she continues,
“the improvements amaze me – the entire emergency area, all of the research, the
level of people recruited, new equipment, the best of everything…and it’s all here
so close to home. That’s very comforting.”
Mrs. Curtis believes that “it’s everyone’s responsibility to share with others, when
resources permit.” It is a belief she has demonstrated through her many years of
support of the UMass Academic Health Sciences Center, and one that she imparts to
her five children and 15 grandchildren. Thank you, Mrs. Curtis, for your commitment
to care for others in the community, and for helping to lead your family’s inspiring
tradition of generosity.

HUDSON
HOAGLAND
SOCIETY
Named in honor of the co-founder of the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research,
the Hudson Hoagland Society recognizes major annual contributors who share a
commitment to advancing biomedical research. Founded in 1985, the Hudson Hoagland
Society is building upon 23 years of discovery and extraordinary advancements. The Society
provides critical resources—through the Annual Research Fund—for scientists to pursue new
lines of investigations and discovery. In 2008 the Annual Research Fund Grants were
renamed the Worcester Foundation Grants to honor the legacy and preserve the principles
upon which the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research was founded.

Timothy and Julie Marsters
Active Parent Ambassadors
From day one, when their daughter Emily began medical school, Tim and Julie Marsters
knew that UMass Medical School was the right place. “The facility itself and all of the
educational components are very impressive,” Mr. Marsters says, but it was “the collegial
feeling, the close community, and the welcoming attitude that you’re not alone in this,”
that made them feel so assured as parents. Mr. and Mrs. Marsters have welcomed the
Medical School’s outreach to parents, and are active ambassadors for the Parents
Association, supporters and participants in Emily’s education. They know firsthand,
having toured the simulation technology labs, that their daughter can literally “practice”
medicine on simulated patients. This gives students hands-on experience with procedures, and they are able to review results via the latest in a digital recording and playback
system.
Julie, Emily (class of 2010) and
Timothy Marsters
“The Medical School has a highly integrated research and clinical program that is
inextricable from the classroom component. It’s very impressive…And the fact
underlying all of this is the cost,” says Mr. Marsters. “The cost is a fraction of what it
should be considering the quality of education. As taxpayers, we feel we’re on the long
end of the deal….for once!”

Walk to Cure Cancer. More than 14,000 walkers stepped out on
September 23, 2007 for the 9th Annual Walk to Cure Cancer, making
it the largest single-day event in Central Massachusetts. Participation has
increased more than 400% since its inception in 1999, and fundraising
surpassed $800,000. Thanks in part to the Walk, the UMass Memorial
Cancer Center opened in 2002 with 33,000 square feet of state-of-theart laboratory space. UMMCC researchers there are making
breakthroughs in understanding the genetic basis for tumor suppression
while improving the detection and treatment of conditions such as
non-Hodgkins lymphoma, leukemia, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and
pancreatic cancer.
A first-of-its-kind partnership with the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the
University of Massachusetts is not only raising funds but bringing the
community together. Presenting sponsor, Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Massachusetts, is stepping forward for a 10th year, joined by flagship,
media and corporate sponsors. Teams representing UMass Memorial
Health Care, UMass Medical School, an array of unions, state and city
government, school systems, and area non-profits and businesses join
memorial and survivor teams in a singular display of unity in the fight
against cancer. In its first decade the Walk to Cure Cancer has raised
over $5M. “There is such an amazing commitment from the walkers
and team leaders,” says Walk Manager Tamara Hampton. “Together we
are going to keep raising funds to fight this disease.”

Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Yamin
A family’s love for UMass Medical School and UMass
Memorial
Medical Center
“It’s the best money we’ve ever spent,” says Dr. Joseph Yamin and his wife, Maureen,
of Leominster, who have invested in UMass Medical School through the education of
their two sons, Jay, Class of 2003, and Justin, Class of 2009. Dr. and Mrs. Yamin also
invest generously in the UMass Memorial Medical Center where they go for their
healthcare needs. They think of the medical school, research center, and hospital as
“national treasures.”
Inspired by the principle that only a life lived for others is worth living, the couple believes
that philanthropy is a way to contribute to the common good. “We don’t live in isolation,”
says Dr. Yamin. “If you want the best in healthcare – and we all access the healthcare
system at some level in our lifetimes – then you can’t be passive about it. You have to
make it happen yourself and not wait for someone else. Any level of giving makes a
difference.”
They are pleased, too, that they literally can see their investments at work, not only
through the high quality of education and achievements of their sons, but also through
the continuing expansion of the UMass Memorial Medical Center, “making this a
world-class facility where you can see that individuals are getting the best in care.”
Their philosophy that only a life lived for others is worth living evidently is shared by their
son Justin who was a Wall Street investment banker who soon realized his disenchantment
and decided to change professions so he might do good for others. Dr. Yamin says that
Justin was inspired by his brother Jay whom he saw as clearly happy with his choice of the
medical profession. In fact, Dr. Jay Yamin has been so happy with his experience at UMass
Medical School that he remained here for his internship and residency, and this year will
complete a three-year Gastroenterology and Heptology Fellowship. Jay will be practicing
in Massachusetts.
Justin intends to go into Internal Medicine residency upon graduation and looks forward
to practicing in this state.
Dr. and Mrs. Yamin intend to be lifelong contributors along with their sons.
