We are proud to present the 2013-2014 edition of our Annual Report to the Community.
During a time of unprecedented and unsettling transformation in the healthcare industry and its funding resources, we continue to navigate through almost constant change and challenge. The implementation of our strategic plan is paying off in terms of increasing revenue opportunities and changing the way we manage ever increasing costs so that we can do more with less reliance on constricted financial resources, and still grow in ways that are important for our community.
You may notice that we have recently enhanced our corporate logo with more prominent use of the
NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System brand identity. We have been a member of the System for 22 years, and this logo reflects our ongoing, integrated relationship in this system, as well as the heightened importance of our organization as a key part of the System. In a human reflection of this relationship, Gary Zuar has taken on the chairmanship of our board of trustees and is the co-author of this report.
Since our last report to you, NYHQ has made great strides, including:
• Our program to increase access to our services and clinicians throughout the borough has gained tremendous traction. As of press time, three practices, Queens Diabetes and Endocrinology and
Bayside Primary Care (formerly known as Barra, Coman, Rawlings), and the surgical practice of
Kap-Jae Sung, M.D., have joined our hospital and are now members of our New York Hospital
Queens physician group, New York Queens Medicine & Surgery, P.C.
• At the same time, we added physicians and services to our Maspeth Multispecialty Care and Whitestone Primary Care practices. Additional practices are coming onboard in 2014 including new sites in Astoria (June), Auburndale and more.
• In this report, you can review our operating statistics, some of which reflect the increase in demand of our outpatient services. For example, we saw an increase of more than 2,000 additional ambulatory care visits in 2013 coming through our community medicine sites, which offer primary and specialty care to those with private insurance as well as Medicaid.
In this period, we also performed 600 additional ambulatory surgery/endoscopy procedures
(see page 26 for a list of operating statistics).
• The three offices of our joint venture, Main Street Radiology, are booming through patient and physician demand. In 2013 alone, approximately 265,000 radiologic procedures were performed. To accommodate our community’s needs, we are in the process of opening a fourth office at 72-06 Northern Boulevard in Jackson Heights.
• Through a grant from the TransCanada/NYC Economic Development Corporation, we renovated our Pediatric Asthma Mobile Unit in order to care for children at Jacob A. Riis
Neighborhood Settlement in Long Island City – right in the heart of “Asthma Alley”
(read about this on page 11).
• And, on the main campus, we have added experienced physician leaders in Trauma and
Critical Care Medicine: Slobodan Jazarevic, M.D., and James Gasperino, M.D., Ph.D.,
M.P.H. (read about these physicians on page 18). NYHQ is currently a Level 1 Trauma
Center, as designated by New York State. Additionally, we are working to become
Level 1 – designated by the American College of Surgeons.
June 2014
• We have made significant investment in tools to enhance quality and safety, including the installation of an automated tablet-dispensing robot and IV compounding suite, located in our new Pharmacy, to help improve medication safety (read more about quality and safety achievements on pages 03 – 08).
• We are the official hospital for the New York Cosmos Soccer club! NYHQ provides complete medical and orthopaedic care to Cosmos players during games and practices (read about our exclusive partnership on page 15).
Through this report, you can learn more about what is happening, right here at New York Hospital
Queens… and what our progress means to you and this great Queens community! As always, we thank you for your continued support of New York Hospital Queens, our talented and dedicated employees, medical staff, volunteers and trustees.
Sincerely,
Stephen S. Mills

The definition of quality from the Institute of Medicine is “the degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge.” That’s a lot of words that “simply” mean – when you need medical care it should be safe, and be performed in a way that gives you the best chance at a successful course of treatment and recovery.
The health care industry is under heavy transformation. Federal and state leaders, regulatory organizations, independent accreditation groups, non-profit organizations and other arbiters of health care performance are focused on improving the effectiveness and safety of health care in the U.S. They support rigorous quality improvement and examine the value and effectiveness of hospital services.
With this transformation as the backdrop, NYHQ continues to focus on delivering an even higher level of quality care throughout the borough of Queens. At New York Hospital Queens, quality is one of the core strategic pillars that uphold how we manage our organization and our processes. Our quality standards involve four patient-focused components for which we measure quality – every day:
• The first is clinical outcomes and performance of established standards of care: what were the results of the patient’s care?
• Secondly, we evaluate safety: were the results achieved safely, with no harm or added risks to the patient?
• A third measure is access and continuity of care: are more or less residents leaving Queens to receive treatment that we can deliver here? How can we help our community members get the care they need – right here?
• Patient experience is the fourth measure: what do we hear from patients, via formal patient satisfaction ratings, positive or critical letters, and word of mouth in the community?
The quality of medical care has always been a top priority at NYHQ and hundreds of members of our team are focused on helping us continually improve our already high level of clinical performance, via:
Q
“At NYHQ, we challenge ourselves to consistently provide a higher level of quality care – every patient, every caregiver, every time,” says Stephen S. Mills, president and chief executive officer.
“Through quality reporting and clinical outcomes, as well as feedback from patients and their families, we see how well NYHQ is performing and where there are opportunities for improvement.
And, most importantly, we act on them.”
• Recruitment and retention of expert physicians, many of whom are in areas of sub-specialties such as vascular surgery and critical care medicine.
• Participation in clinical research studies to learn about the latest advancements in medicine
(read more about our clinical research studies on page 13).
• Utilizing the electronic health record (EHR) system to collect, share and track individual patient data in our inpatient, emergency department and outpatient settings (read more about our EHR on page 05).
• Meeting and exceeding many of the health care quality and safety standards set by the Joint
Commission, an independent non-profit group that accredits health care organizations and programs nationally. Our latest evaluation came in 2013 after a five-day visit by a Joint
Commission team who studied our compliance with standards of care including infection prevention and control, leadership, and effectiveness and accurate use of medications; read our Joint Commission accreditation quality report online: www.qualitycheck.org.
Q
Our clinical outcomes also make NYHQ a well-regarded hospital among our peers. Recently, two professional societies rated NYHQ highly for quality improvement in two important treatment areas:
• NYHQ received Special Quality Awards from the American College of Surgeons (ACS)
National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. This is a national program where peer professionals review a hospital’s surgical patient data, from pre-op to 30 days after surgery, and measure quality improvement.
• NYHQ received the American Heart Association’s “Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Silver
Plus Achievement Award.” This program reviews results from how patients were managed and recognizes improvements in stroke treatment and prevention of further events.
Preventable hospital errors are a leading cause of death in the U.S. Two of the most common errors are hospital-acquired infections and communications mistakes around prescribing and administering medications.
We constantly examine our safety performance and look for areas to bring to the next level.
For example:
At NYHQ, we always strive to provide safe care to our patients. Safety and patient education are equally recognized for helping to ensure quality. A leading arbiter of hospital safety is the Leapfrog
Group. For the last two consecutive reports, they gave NYHQ an “A” for Hospital Patient Safety/
Quality (read the report here: www.hospitalsafetyscore.org/hospital/the-new-york-hospital-medicalcenter-of-queens). Leapfrog rates hospitals on 26 measures of publicly available safety data and produces a single score that reflects a hospital’s overall potential to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, medical errors, and mistakes in administration of medications.
• We have increased monitoring to refine procedures and achieve safety improvements. As a result,
NYHQ has shown significant decreases in hospital-acquired infections, as much as 50-75 percent in common conditions such as Clostridium difficile and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
The Heart Hospital of Queens at NYHQ received the Mission: Lifeline® Silver Receiving Quality
Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the
American Heart Association for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks, known as a
ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions (STEMI). To prevent death, it is critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication.
NYHQ earned the award by meeting specific criteria and standards of performance for the quick and appropriate treatment of STEMI patients to open the blocked artery. We achieved greater than an 85 percent composite score on the eight Achievement measures, with no single measure below
75 percent. The goal of the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® program is to streamline systems of care to quickly get heart attack patients from the first 911 call to hospital treatment.
04
• We continuously make improvements in infection control, including the early detection and treatment of sepsis (a potentially deadly condition that can be triggered by even a minor infection). At NYHQ, all patients who are admitted to the hospital or come in to our Emergency Department undergo routine screening for sepsis to allow for timely testing and use of antibiotics and other therapies aimed at reducing severe illness or death.
• We have many staff members dedicated to improving patient safety in their daily work.
One such group is the employees at the Trude Weishaupt Memorial Satellite Dialysis Center; our employees developed a patient assessment tool that evaluates and scores a patient’s risk for dislodgement of a needle placed in veins during the dialysis procedure. This tool is now being used by other dialysis facilities. And, our center earned a 5-Diamond designation from the Island
Peer Review Organization that is part of the End Stage Renal Disease Network of New York.
05
Our electronic health records (EHR) allows for the secure sharing of patient medical information among the team of health professionals who are treating a patient. This makes communications between physicians clear and efficient and reduces the chance of errors. Now that patient medical information is electronic, it also means that patients can access discharge instructions, problem lists (an overview of diagnoses), medications, recent lab results, allergies and immunizations, at any time, online via www.nyhq.org/patient_portal. This information can be viewed, saved and transmitted to patients’ physicians.
NYHQ has successfully reported in to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Electronic Record
Incentive Program regarding “meaningful use” of our electronic health record (EHR). Our consistent and correct usage of EHR technology was judged as adding value to quality, safety and effectiveness of care at the hospital. NYHQ earned incentive funds of nearly $10 million, thus far.
• We invest in innovative technology; one example of this is our 4,500 square foot, state-of-the-art pharmacy.
The main feature of the pharmacy is an automated tablet-dispensing robot that speeds drug distribution to patients, while also helping to reduce potential medication errors. Medications are dispensed in a package containing a bar code specific to the patient. At the bedside, the nurse scans the drug’s bar code and then scans the patient’s ID band to record it on the patient’s electronic health record (EHR) to ensure that the right patient, gets the right dosage, at the right time. If there is an error, the nurse is alerted immediately. This robot also tracks inventory and drug expiration dates; it can accept the return of unexpired, used medications, helping to reduce waste.
Countless studies have shown that the quality of health care improves dramatically when patients have both access to primary care and continuity of care within their community. NYHQ provides continuity of care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings:
• NYHQ’s wide network of more than two dozen community-based health care facilities has expanded significantly with the addition of new private physician practices. These physician practices are located in the heart of Queens communities, including Bayside, Whitestone,
Maspeth and Fresh Meadows, and support access to a higher level of primary and specialty care services (read more about our practices and plans for expansion on pages 09-10).
• We take our brand promise to deliver expertise and service right here in Queens very seriously, and our network of community medicine sites continue to deliver a high level of primary and specialty care throughout the borough. Now, three of these facilities that offer primary care have attained designations as a Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home from the National
Commission on Quality Assurance (NCQA). A medical home is a model of coordinated care that strengthens and reinforces the clinician-patient direct relationship. A medical home must provide a high level of accessibility, excellent communication, the latest information technology to prescribe, communicate, track results, obtain clinical support information, and monitor performance. Level 3 is the highest designation possible from NCQA: Jackson Heights
Family Health Center, Theresa Lang Children’s Center adjacent to our main campus, and our
Ambulatory Care Center in Fresh Meadows. These facilities each have a large loyal patient base of individuals and families with either private insurance, Medicaid or Medicare.
• NYHQ helps patients transition from the acute care phase of treatment via the Transitional
Care Unit (TCU). The TCU provides a bridge for those who are medically ready for discharge from an acute care (in-patient) setting, but, may not be ready to return home or to a skilled nursing facility. A dedicated team of nurses provide 24-hour care and trained therapists from
Silvercrest Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies. The TCU earned inclusion among the “Best Nursing Homes for 2014” by U.S. News
and World Report as well as earned a 5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare &
Medicaid (based on a combination of quality measures, inspection survey results and staffing ratios). A physician referral is required for a patient to be admitted to this unit.
06
Understanding how our patients view their experience here at NYHQ is a core part of providing quality care. We receive feedback from patients in various ways, including surveys, phone calls and letters from patients and their family members. Communication with patients helps us learn more about where we excel and where we can improve.
For hospitals, the most crucial measure of patient satisfaction is the HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer
Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) Survey scores. HCAHPS (pronounced H-caps) was launched by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2008. It reviews
27 items as well as patients’ perceptions of their hospital experience. This quality measure also plays an important role in today’s health care transformation. The Affordable Care Act includes the
HCAHPS patient satisfaction scores in its calculation of value-based incentive payments to hospitals.
We listen to our patients. Their feedback has resulted in changes that directly affect their experience here. For example:
• Needs for privacy while in the hospital and education about therapies are emphasized in special communications training that all staff who interact with patients and families undergo.
• Quiet times are observed, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., to promote a healing environment for patients.
• Our Patient Advocates regularly visit with patients and their families to monitor inpatient needs.
• Our next step is to establish a Patient/Family Advisory Council – a working group that will advise on best ways to implement new plans.
As you continue to read this report, you will learn much more about NYHQ’s accomplishments over the last year, many of which affect the quality care and services we provide to our patients right here!

A patient may have symptoms of one particular illness, but upon further testing, it is possible to find silent health issues, with no signs of symptoms, that have the potential to be life threatening.
This was true in the case of Marc Young.
Mr. Young made a visit to his NYHQ primary care physician,
Gabriele DeAngelis, M.D., because of discomfort in his abdomen.
A sonogram performed by sonographer Ekcatherine Corona in the
Emergency Department identified gallstones as the cause of his pain.
Upon review of the scan, there was an additional issue – early stage cancer on Mr. Young’s kidney. Two surgeries were required. Stephen Merola, M.D., vice chairman,
Patient Safety and Quality, and chief, General, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery, successfully removed Mr. Young’s gallbladder. A few weeks later, Gerald Wang, M.D., chief, Urology, removed the cancer from the kidney.
On the first anniversary of his diagnosis, Mr. Young addressed an interdepartmental meeting at
NYHQ, thanking the team for its collaboration in saving his life. Special thanks went to sonographer
Ms. Corona, whose expert skills identified the cancer.
The patient granted written permission, in accordance with HIPAA regulations, to use his name, likeness and information for the purposes of this testimonial.
High risk pregnancies require collaboration among multiple specialists whose expertise can help save children’s lives. At NYHQ, our services, including cardiologists, obstetricians and gynecologists, and intensive care specialists, partner closely with each other – and with expectant mothers – in striving to achieve the safe delivery of healthy newborns.
A recent collaboration resulted in the first planned delivery of a baby with a ductal dependent congenital heart defect. This life-threatening condition required the pediatric specialty team to be able to diagnose the risk months before birth and then to be able to move forward with early intervention.
The obstetrics patient, pregnant with her third child, had developed diabetes. This put her baby at risk of having heart problems. Her physician, Frank Kalafactic, M.D., attending obstetrician and gynecologist, referred her for a fetal echocardiogram, a diagnostic test that uses ultrasound to image the fetus’ heart. This revealed a critical blockage, an abnormally narrow valve that was restricting blood flow to the lungs. Then began a planned course of treatment leading up to the baby’s birth. Weekly monitoring using fetal echocardiolography allowed Maria Thanjan, M.D., director, Pediatric Cardiology, and Ajay Mirani, M.D., attending pediatric cardiologist to closely track the baby’s condition and adjust planning.
The fetal echocardiogram revealed that blood flow to the baby’s lungs was obstructed.
The baby would need to receive a life-saving medication at birth to keep a blood vessel
(known as the ductus arteriosus) open until catheterization could be performed.
Upon birth, the baby girl was quickly taken to the neonatal intensive care unit at NYHQ.
She was given a life-saving medication by Eli Keonig, M.D., attending neonatologist, until she could be transferred to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical
Center. There the newborn underwent a cardiac catheterization procedure to unblock the obstructed area of her heart. This highly coordinated transfer was successfully accomplished in time to save the infant’s life.
Besides the technical excellence of the medical collaboration and coordination, and the successful result, the new mother praised the communications she received throughout this months-long process. “The team of NYHQ physicians communicated with me so that I could understand what was happening and could be a part of the decision-making process.
They made me feel comfortable. I trusted that I was in good hands,” she said.

When care is conveniently located, people have the benefit of easier access and may be more likely to act on health issues before they become an emergency. Fostering easy access to care requires the creation and expansion of our network of primary care physicians and specialists in all corners of the
Queens community.
NYHQ is doing just that. As part of a multi-year plan, we are increasing our network of health professionals throughout the borough of Queens, as well as the locations at which NYHQ care is available. Some locations are our existing community medicine facilities such as in Jackson Heights,
Flushing, and Fresh Meadows. Others are private physician practices that we are building, acquiring or aligning with in a way that helps to enrich the services they can provide to new and long-time patients.
Below, you will find information about some of the many excellent primary care physicians and specialists who have joined the NYHQ physician group, New York Queens Medicine
& Surgery, P.C. For a more complete listing as the network expands, please visit: www.nyhq.org/Primary-Care-and-Multispecialty-Practices. Additional practices are coming onboard in 2014, including new sites in Astoria, Auburndale and more. Watch nyhq.org for news about these sites.

Asthma can threaten a child’s life if not managed properly. But parents’ and caregivers’ busy schedules and financial issues can make it difficult to get the consistent care needed to manage the disease. Now a newly renovated NYHQ pediatric asthma mobile unit brings asthma care directly to families in the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement in Long Island City.
This area, known as “Asthma Alley,” has one of highest child asthma rates in New York State.
Two days a week, a health care team led by Hadi Jabbar, M.D., director, Pediatric Asthma Center, sees children at Riis Settlement via the mobile unit. A grant of $326,000 was obtained from
TransCanada through the New York City Economic Development Corporation to fund this program. For more information or to make an appointment, call 718-670-1920.
Observing and respecting cultural traditions is important to us. Friday, January 31, was the start of the Lunar New Year, celebrated by many Asian cultures. The first baby born at NYHQ that day was baby girl Meoimi, born to parents Yin Liu and Chris Gammon and delivered by Ing-Yann Jeng, M.D., attending physician, Obstetrics and
Gynecology. According to the Lunar calendar, Meoimi was born in the Year of the Horse, the same as her grandfather and a sign of good luck for her family. NYHQ helped celebrate by presenting her family with a $250 gift card and flowers.
The number of young adults and children with heart disease is on the rise worldwide, including right here in our own community.
NYHQ’s Division of Pediatric Cardiology has expanded to meet this growing need.
Maria Thanjan, M.D., director, Pediatric
Cardiology is supported by pediatric cardiologist Ajay Mirani, M.D., and two certified pediatric echocardiology technicians.
The specialty team uses the latest diagnostic tools and treatments to help families create a plan of care for a child, even before the child is born. They care for a wide range of heart-related conditions among children: heart murmurs, arrhythmias, chest pain, palpitations, rheumatic fever, cardiomyopathy genetic syndromes, obesity, clearance for sports participation, and clearance for use of ADHD medications, among others. The team also addresses urgent care for children with cardiac symptoms who come to the Pediatric Emergency Department.
The Pediatric Cardiology Division’s broad range of services includes fetal echocardiography, a widely used diagnostic technology that uses ultrasound to image the heart. It can help detect and monitor heart defects in the developing fetus.

Involvement in clinical research trials – studies that evaluate investigative therapies for patients before being approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration – is a trait of a higher quality health care organization. NYHQ has physician researchers who are often selected to be principal investigators of such clinical trials. These studies provide the Queens community with access to therapies that may help improve their condition. Three major studies are currently under way at NYHQ via the Theresa and Eugene M. Lang Research Center:
• Type 2 Diabetes Drug Effectiveness GRADE Study. Enrollment is open for a five-year-long type 2 diabetes study and we are recruiting participants. The study is evaluating the long-term benefits and risks of four widely used diabetes drugs when each is used in combination with metformin. Individuals must be taking the commonly prescribed drug metformin, but no other diabetes medications within the past six months. Patients must have been diagnosed with type
2 diabetes, at age 30 or older, within the past five years. Inquiries should be directed to the
Theresa and Eugene M. Lang Center for Research and Education at NYHQ, (718) 670-1827.
• Electrophysiology Studies. Typically, patients who wear a pacemaker cannot undergo MRI testing, a valuable diagnostic tool for a broad range of conditions. The study at NYHQ, led by our electrophysiologists and a radiologist, is evaluating a new, potentially MRI-safe pacemaker. In another study, our electrophysiologists are investigating the effectiveness of two anti-coagulants, warfarin and rivaroxaban in patients undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation for treatment of symptoms of atrial fibrillation.
• OPERA Study. This Crohn’s disease study, led by Moshe Rubin, M.D., director, Division of
Gastroenterology, is assessing the safety of an investigational drug for the treatment of this gastrointestinal inflammatory condition. Crohn’s disease currently has no cure.
NYHQ’s cancer program currently treats about 2,000 new patients each year and is slated for expansion to meet the demand in the region. The hospital’s 2013 A Spring Night Gala, held at the American Museum of Natural History was attended by more than 600 benefactors, hospital leadership and physicians, as we honored Georgia and Dimitrios Kaloidis, owners of Terrace on
the Park and the Georgia Diner, for their contributions to churches, monasteries, hospitals (including
NYHQ) and schools in the U.S. and in Greece. The Honorable
Claire Shulman was presented with a Community Service Award for her continuous efforts to build a better Queens.
The 2014 A Spring Night Gala was held at Pier Sixty/Chelsea Piers on June 2. NYHQ benefactors
Jill and Joseph Levy, directors of the
Page and Otto Marks, Jr. Foundation, received the hospital’s highest honor
– the Pacesetter Award – for their charitable work benefitting healthcare institutions and foundations, including our Division of Neurology. The past two Gala events, combined with proceeds from our 2013 Frank Randazzo Jr. Golf & Tennis Classic, saw more than $2 million pledged to our cancer programs.
Staying close to our community is a high priority for NYHQ. Community advice and assistance provided by the NYHQ Community Advisory Council helps us fulfill our mission. This active group of Queens business and civic leaders assists with fundraising, public affairs as well as community and government relations, and makes recommendations for programs and services that our community needs.
In 2013, the Council, led by
Chairperson Veronica Tsang, expanded its leadership. David
Dolan and Ashook Ramsaran were elected as vice president and secretary, respectively.
An active community volunteer,
Mr. Dolan is a Eucharistic minister at Holy Family Parish and volunteers in NYHQ’s
Department of Pastoral Care.
Previously, he held leadership positions at financial organizations such as Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., Kissel-Blake, Inc., and the New York Stock Exchange. Mr. Ramsaran serves as executive vice president at the Global
Organization of People of Indian Origin. He also serves on the board of the Guyanese East
Indian Civic Association and on the St. John’s University Committee on Caribbean and Latin
American Studies.

It can be a dilemma for health care staff in a hospital emergency room: the patient they’ve treated may not require admission to the hospital, however, the patient is not ready to return home. In 2013,
NYHQ opened a 15-bed Clinical Decision-Making Unit. Here, care is available for patients who need an added eight to 24 hours of stabilization and treatment. A team that includes a physician, a nurse and a case manager coordinates and monitors the patient’s health until a definitive decision can be made to admit or discharge the patient.
Throughout 2014, NYHQ is hosting a free lecture series presented in Mandarin by NYHQ medical staff and community physicians. At 10 a.m. on the second Saturday of every month in 2014, physicians discuss health topics of importance to the Chinese community. NYHQ, the NYHQ Community Advisory Council and NTD Television have partnered on the
Healthy Chinese Community Lecture Series. NYHQ’s David Chiang, M.D., attending physician,
Obstetrics & Gynecology, hosts the series. All lectures are held in the Lang Auditorium at
NYHQ. Learn more about the series and watch video presentations of the lectures online: www.nyhq.org/HealthyChineseCommunityLectures.
NYHQ is the official hospital of the recently revived New York Cosmos soccer club. It has been nearly 30 years since the Cosmos played in the North American Soccer League, but the pro team has maintained a loyal following. NYHQ orthopaedic and sports medicine specialists now serve as the official medical consultants for the team. They provide complete medical care to Cosmos players during games and practices. Off the field, the Cosmos and NYHQ are teaming up on initiatives that include youth health and wellness clinics in the Queens community and blood drives during select
Cosmos home games. The partnership also includes marketing activities, such as a branded presence for NYHQ at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium, the Cosmos’ home field, and at Mitchel Field, the team’s official practice facility. For tickets, go to nycosmos.com/tickets. For bone and joint issues, call 1-866-670-OUCH (6824).
Much like flowers planted in the ground, the NYHQ Community Art Garden has taken root with paintings from local artists including the hospital’s employees, patients, and visitors as well as community members. Located in the Radiology corridor, the Garden features works of art that demonstrate Healing, Compassion, Health, Wellness, Diversity, Queens, Community. The hospital provided the canvases, and local artists – including patients, community members and NYHQ employees and staff – donated their works.

Access Your Medical Records Online-At-Your Convenience
Now, patients can access their medical records online, from anywhere, at any time, via a “patient portal.”
Accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - even on a mobile phone – a patient can securely view, download, and even transmit their medical records to their physician. This convenient service saves time and a trip to our medical records office.
There are two portals: one for inpatients/emergency department patients, and the other for outpatients.
For more information, and to register for the patient portal, visit www.nyhq.org/patient_portal.
Find a Doctor, Right Here!
A free NYHQ multi-lingual phone service 1-800-282-6684 is available
24 hours a day, seven days a week to help you find a doctor.
And, the hospital website, www.nyhq.org, has a free online directory to help you find physicians that meet your needs: www.nyhq.org/find-a-doctor-queens.
24/7 Emergency Room
Communications Desk Service for Physicians
Effective communication with a patient’s primary care physician/referring physician in an emergency is a very important component in providing optimal patient care. The Emergency Department at New York Hospital Queens offers a communications desk, available 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week, for physicians whose patients need emergency care or need to be admitted.
• Before a patient comes to the Emergency Room, physicians are asked to call our communications desk (718-670-1100) with the patient’s name and how best to reach the physician.
• A clerk will record the physician’s call on the Emergency Room’s electronic patient tracking board.
• When the patient arrives, the Emergency Room physician assigned to the patient will call the primary care physician/referring physician. This step in the process helps avoid miscommunication, lost referral notes and duplicate calls.
In the borough of Queens, and particularly in our immediate community, we see the increased need for trauma and critical care medicine. In 2014, we continued to build our base of medical talent who will help make our clinical programs even more robust so that our community members do not have to leave Queens, even for the most complex cases.
Retired Army Col. Slobodan (Danny) Jazarevic, M.D., joins the Department of Surgery as director, Trauma and Critical Care. He brings extensive experience in trauma and critical care to NYHQ. He previously served in military and civilian leadership positions, which included roles as a director of trauma and critical care and as a chairman of surgery. He is board certified in surgical critical care and surgery.
Dr. Jazarevic joined our Section of Acute, Trauma and Critical Care led by Jason Sample, M.D.
Dr. Jazarevic lead the effort for NYHQ to achieve accreditation as a Level 1 Trauma Center by the
American College of Surgeons. We are currently a New York state-designated Level 1 Trauma Center.
Dr. Jazarevic earned his medical degree in Europe from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency training in General Surgery at Lankenau Medical Center and his fellowship in Surgical
Critical Care at Stony Brook University Hospital. Dr. Jazarevic is a highly decorated war veteran, having served in combat operations in Panama, Desert Storm, Africa, Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq. He is fluent in seven languages.
James Gasperino, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., D.A.B.T., joins the hospital as chief, Division of Critical
Care Medicine and hospital director, Critical Care Services. In this dual role, he provides leadership for the hospital’s critical care services, and directs the integration and coordination of critical care services to improve clinical and financial performance. Dr. Gasperino brings to NYHQ leadership experience gained as chief, Section of Critical Care and director of Critical Care Medicine at Drexel University
College of Medicine. There, he also held academic positions as clinical associate professor for the departments of Medicine and Neurology, and he was associate professor, Department of Environmental and Occupation Health at Drexel University School of Public Health. Throughout his career,
Dr. Gasperino has directed and worked in medical, neurologic, surgical and cardiac intensive care units.
Dr. Gasperino is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, critical care medicine, neurologic critical care, hospice and palliative medicine, nutrition support and toxicology. He completed his internship and residency in Internal
Medicine at Bellevue Hospital - New York University Medical Center, where he also completed his fellowships in
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine through the clinical investigator pathway. In addition, Dr. Gasperino went on to complete another fellowship in Multidisciplinary Critical Care Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and
Montefiore Medical Center.
Dr. Gasperino earned his bachelor’s degree from Pace University and his medical degree from the State University of New
York at Stony Brook School of Medicine. He earned several degrees from Columbia University; most recently, he earned his M.P.H. in Environmental Toxicology. He holds several professional memberships in medical and scientific societies, including the Society for Critical Care Medicine (Sections of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology, and Respiratory
Therapy), the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians and the Foundation for the
Advancement of Cardiothoracic Surgical Care.

We have a strong relationship with members of the media. Our Public Affairs & Marketing team is responsive to media inquiries, produces great ideas for stories and helps coordinate interviews with
NYHQ medical experts and leaders who provide commentary about medical and health care industry topics.
In 2013 alone, more than 150 news interviews took place. The sampling of coverage below demonstrates our commentary on trends and health issues in the news, as well as our role as a thought-leader for the future of health care.
Infectious diseases are of great concern, particularly to those with vulnerable younger children or elderly relatives whose health can be easily compromised. Sorana Segal-Maurer, M.D., director,
Dr. James J. Rahal Jr., Division of Infectious Diseases, is an expert source for media for stories about diseases that are on the rise. Below are a few stories she provided commentary for:
• CBS-TV produced a story about a study that showed handbags may carry more bacteria than toilet seats. Dr. Segal-Maurer advised people not to worry but to take steps to combat germs, such as frequent hand washing.
• NYHQ has long been an expert source for commentary on the West
Nile Virus (WNV), based on the work of the late James Rahal, M.D. Dr. Segal-Maurer provided commentary for CBS-TV when mosquitoes in our community were found to be infected with the WNV. She deemed that that 2013 summer season may continue to see a sharp rise in new cases locally. Her advice was to beware of standing pools of water that may attract mosquitoes and to avoid public swimming pools or hot tubs that may not receive proper cleaning.
• Dr. Segal-Maurer discussed another seasonal infectious disease – winter
colds – in an interview with Upwave.com, a health and wellness website that also provides content for CNN Health. Despite colds being
“common,” she noted that they can be very hard for people to conquer.
She said that its symptoms are the body’s way of trying to rid itself of toxins. Her advice was to stay hydrated, use decongestants and cold compresses, and take over-the-counter pain relievers to bring down any fever. Dr. Segal-Maurer also discounted that being outdoors in cold weather causes a cold.
She said that staying indoors puts people into closer contact with individuals who may carry germs that cause a cold.
Adopting healthy lifestyle habits that promote weight management can be challenging.
Ellen Gutkin, D.O., attending gastroenterologist, discussed various risks to weight gain in several interviews with WCBS-TV News.
• Check the ingredients of popular flavored waters or fizzy drinks, she advised. If they sound more like a chemistry lab or contain loads of sugar, these drinks are not healthy. In fact, if used
every day, the flavored waters may lead to weight gain of 20 to 40 pounds in one year.
Dr. Gutkin suggested squeezing lemons or limes into water as a healthy alternative.
• Another seemingly healthy behavior – eating a solely vegetarian diet – can cause weight gain,
Dr. Gutkin advised. Some new vegetarians do not balance carbohydrate intake with eating enough protein. Protein staves off hunger longer than carbohydrates, and some carbohydrate vegetables are converted into sugars in the body. A balance is needed to prevent weight gain.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October presents opportunities for the media to educate readers about this disease.
• In an interview with NY1 News, Beth Siegel, M.D., F.A.C.S., director,
NYHQ Breast Center, emphasized the importance of breast cancer screenings.
She notes that it remains difficult to predict who will develop breast cancer based solely on risk factors. Studies have shown that as many as 75 percent of women with newly diagnosed breast cancer do not have any risk factors.
• Oncology Times, a publication for physician audiences, asked
Dr. Siegel to comment on the differences in treating breast cancer in men and women. She explained that the location of the cancer determines the proper treatment. Most men with breast cancer undergo mastectomy rather than breast-conserving therapy, and survival rates are comparable between these two treatments.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best defense against stroke, according to Rajeev Dayal, M.D., chief, Section of Vascular Surgery, who spoke with the Queens Tribune about managing health risks to prevent stroke. “Stroke is the cumulative effect of not taking care of yourself,” he said.
Many types of stroke exist, but the most common results from poorly controlled blood pressure. He recommended healthy lifestyle habits – diet, exercise, quit smoking – as well as managing blood pressure.
The Times Ledger interviewed Stephen S. Mills, president & chief executive officer, about the innovative measures NYHQ has taken to address the death of hospital facilities in Queens. At a time when other hospitals were closing, NYHQ expanded by opening community-based facilities and adding physician practices with primary and specialty care services. These sites provide easy access to high quality care for residents, in their own neighborhood. Mr. Mills sees this trend as a solution to greater demands for health care delivery of services in the future (read more about our community-based facilities and physician practices on pages 09-10).
