MESSAGE FROM
THE PRESIDENT
DEAR FRIENDS
DEAR FRIENDS OF THE WILTON LIBRARY,
Community.
Connectedness.
Confidence.
These are the driving ideals that created our library and
govern it today.
While our founders might not immediately recognize some of
Wilton Library’s most popular assets of today, such as our state
of the art 3D Printers, Robots, computer rooms, AV equipment
or massive digital collections of text, audio and more, they
would be most gratified to feel and see beyond the technological
innovations into the true heart of Wilton Library…the many
enthusiastic patrons, community leaders and fantastic staff
driving the library’s contagious Joie de vivre which generates that
special tingle with every entrance into the building (well, maybe
that and our beautiful new doors and fancy new people counter).
And as busy as the library seems today, with a vast and most
exquisitely produced schedule of programming, entertainment
and fundraising events numbering in the hundreds each year,
our prescient founders would feel right at home. The number
one source of funding for Wilton Library in its first year was
from “entertainments, donations and lifetime memberships”
comprising over 85% of the first year’s budget (a little bit over
$200!). That very first summer in 1895, having operated for
only 2 months, the precursor of “Wilton Reads” was brilliantly
conceived and implemented with a community-wide Mother
Goose themed Tea including costumed performances, dancing,
singing, games, an Art Display and of course refreshments for the
Adults and a grab-bag for the children. It sounds like any given
weekend at the library of today and tomorrow! Our forebears
would have been right at home at this past years “Wilton Reads”
where the library partnered with many local businesses to

produce programs and events around the book Ragtime. These
events were reminiscent of those that took place at the very first
“Wilton Reads” with dancing, music, food, costumes and art
exhibits, special activities for the children, and lectures.
Libraries were the pioneer, and will continue to be at the
forefront of what has been recently dubbed “the sharing
economy.” As they say, sharing is caring. It is not a new idea,
or one that will ever be outmoded at Wilton Library. We
are thrilled for sharing with and caring for the community,
and equally thrilled to be shared by, cared for by our Wilton
Community. We thrive on each other, and will continue to do so.
It has been my privilege to live in Wilton since 1989 and to be
an active member of Wilton Library, and has been my honor to
serve on the board these past 8 years. Next I look forward to
being a devoted and active patron and volunteer for another 30,
40 or maybe even 50 years to come! See you in the stacks!

The past year was a dynamic and exciting one for us. It was truly
marked by a spirit of community engagement and partnerships.
While it is difficult to recapture all the events that occurred over the
past twelve months, I hope the highlights presented in this report
will serve as vivid examples of the “magic” of our 119th year.
Our maker space, the Innovation Station, continues to welcome
the community to try state of the art technologies such as
3D printing, to experiment with new methodologies, and to
share these skills, knowledge and talents with others. The
community quickly embraced our new resource, which proved
that our intellectually thirsty patrons were ready for this
innovation.
We were gratified by a Wilton Bulletin editorial which
described our library as “A Town treasure”. And, further
affirmation came when the New York Times’ Real Estate
Section featuring the Town of Wilton, mentioned Wilton
Library with our Innovation Station and robotics team,
among the some of the best reasons to move to Wilton. And
in April, Wilton Library received the Connecticut Library
Association’s 2015 Excellence in Public Library Service Award
for communities serving of over 15,000. An excerpt from the
award committee’s announcement read: “We loved the creative,
collaborative nature of this project. It provides an excellent
model of an engaging community program that other libraries
could offer to their communities.”
Our Innovation Station in many ways was a catalyst to our
STEM/STEAM initiative which culminated with our first
Innovation Day in May. We attracted local inventors, makers,
tech gurus, and artists of all ages to present and discuss their
inventions, designs, prototypes, and to demonstrate various
artistic skills.
Wilton Reads was yet another exciting community
collaboration. The novel Ragtime served as the backdrop for a
wide array of programs that brought our community together
to discuss the novel and to revisit the turn of the 20th century.
Through partnerships with other several local organizations,
businesses, and private individuals, we engaged the community
in experiencing the Ragtime era with displays ranging from
vintage period garments, fascinating inventions of the era,
lectures, movies, music, art, foods, automobiles and much
more.
Of course, these exciting and robust library offerings,
resources, programs and events throughout the year were
supported or made possible through numerous partnerships,
collaborations, and generous donations which are gratefully
acknowledged on the following pages.
As we enter our 120th year of service to the Wilton
community, I echo the words of W. Boyd Smith, Wilton
Library’s President in 1918 -- “The possibilities for our future
are unlimited and our hope is good”. We look forward to
creating further opportunities to engage our community as we
continue to inspire and foster life-long learning for all.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
This is a story of partnership - of Wilton Library in fiscal year
2014-2015 and its many collaborations that served the people
of Wilton and the surrounding communities. New partners,
old partners and future partners — it is only by working
together with individuals, businesses and organizations that
we make our mission statement come to life:
Wilton Library is our gateway to discovery.
We inform, enrich, connect and inspire our community.
Throughout the year, our partnerships took different forms
– from formal to informal – and engaged various segments
of our community such as local government, schools,
private businesses, not-for-profit groups and charities,
corporate entities as well as individuals. Partnerships ranged
from providing expertise for our programming efforts,
generous donations of goods and services for our events
and fundraisers, financial support for programs as well as
bringing new ideas and new faces to Wilton Library.
Our most valued relationship continues to be the ongoing
partnership with our individual donors who provided funding
for 100% of our collection materials and a portion of our
operating budget. Our partnership with the Town of Wilton

provided the balance of our budget as well as valued member
support on our Board of Trustees.
As you peruse our ‘chapters’ ahead, please read between the
lines for this not-so-secret message:
As Wilton Library’s scope of resources, services and
programs increases, as well as the size of the public we
serve grows, these partnerships are essential to meeting our
community’s needs. By forging these vital collaborations,
we sustain an active, engaging and innovative atmosphere at
Wilton Library and as well as provide resources and benefits
to organizations with common goals.
So it is with much gratitude to our community partners, both
public and private, that our partnership story unfolds…

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS
Wilton Library is often referred to as the
community’s living room. And why not?
There is no better place in town to engage
in a literary discussion, watch a thoughtprovoking documentary, meet a bestselling
author, listen to live music, or hear a scholarly
lecture, all the while surrounded by a
stunning display of diverse artwork and often
a friend or two. Welcome to your cultural
connection at home in Wilton Library.
LITERARY PROGRAMS AND
PARTNERSHIPS
Wilton Library’s popular Author Talk
series played host to a variety of awardwinning, international bestselling authors
this year including Erik Larson, Patricia
Cornwell, Philippa Gregory, Wally
Lamb and Dana Cowin. In total more
than 25 Author Talks and Area Author
Affairs welcomed over 1800 attendees
from Wilton, the surrounding towns and
across the tristate. Our author programs
would not have been possible without
the partnership of local independent
bookseller Elm Street Books in New
Canaan, a myriad of publishing houses as
well as the authors themselves.

Wilton continues to be a town of avid
readers. For the first-time ever, an
online adult summer reading program
was offered. A weekly drawing awarded
a Wilton Chamber of Commerce gift
certificate to a participant. A new Food
Lit Book group was the brainchild of Pam
Lillis, a health and wellness coach who
now serves as the group’s moderator. Book
Buzz discussions continued as did our
popular Wilton Library Readers group,
moderated by Susan Boyar. Working
in partnership with the Wilton Senior
Center, seven book discussions brought
literary conversation directly to our
town’s senior bibliophiles. Poetry lovers
and fans of the classics enjoyed seminars
EVENTS
thanks to moderators Judson Scruton,
Ben Van Vechten and Gerald Weiss.
Our largest literary partnership endeavor
was showcased in our community read
initiative, Wilton Reads. E.L. Doctorow’s
classic Ragtime was chosen as the 2014
selection and 100 free books were
distributed thanks to Fairfield County
Bank. Ragtime’s rich period of American
history lent itself to the coordination of
more than a dozen themed programs,
made possible through the support
of many local partners -- businesses,
non-profits and private individuals. In
total, 526 people participated in the 2014
Wilton Reads programs and the response
was extremely positive.
MAKING MUSIC HAPPEN
Wilton Library’s musical tradition
continued to be strong, thanks in large
part to the William and Karen Tell
Foundation, with special thanks to Ed
and Catherine Romer and Chris and Tish
Brubeck, who again made our popular
Hot & Cool Jazz series possible. Our
own CT’s Own concert series again
provided a showcase for local performers
and featured two concerts. Thanks to the
ongoing generosity and partnership with
The Village Market, the 14th season of
Summer Music & More concerts attracted
a full house for each of four events.
ART
The Wilton Candlelight Concert series
continued to provide a valuable funding
stream for our classical music collections.
DOCUMENTARY FILMS AND
DISCUSSION
Partners were the key to the success of
our documentary programs. Thanks
to the expertise of filmmaker Megan
Smith-Harris, the New Perspectives
Film Series continued to showcase
engaging documentaries followed
by lively discussion. The League of
Women Voters’ Reel Mondays series
brought films highlighting political
activism and current affairs to the
forefront. Additionally, the Wilton
community showed their support at a
special screening of Every Three Seconds,
a documentary made possible in part
through funding from the community
itself and brought to the library in
partnership with Wilton resident and
executive producer Jeanne Robertson.
Working together with the Betsy and
Jesse Fink Foundation, a screening and
panel discussion of the film Fed Up shed a
revealing light on the current state of the
American diet.
SUPPORTING LOCAL ART
In a library, books are the bread and butter of the business, but at Wilton Library,
it’s often the artwork that steals the show. Thanks to our volunteer art chairman, Ed
MacEwen, our library walls are awash with some of the most creative and inspiring local
and regional artwork. Monthly exhibitions were made possible by partnerships with
several organizations including the Wilton Arts Council, CT Society of Sculptors and
St. Phillip’s Art Guild as well as numerous individual artists. In cooperation with the
Weir Farm Art Center and Weir Farm National Historic Site, monthly presentations and
exhibits showcased the work from artists in the Weir Farm Artist-in-Residency program.

INSPIRING SEMINARS & PROGRAMS
Whether you wanted to learn to parent your
teen better, get a flu shot, start a business,
plan your retirement, meet a legislator, learn
photography, find a volunteer position, drive
more safely or create flower arrangements
like the White House does – Wilton
Library was the place to learn it, see it, and
do it. Coordinated together with many
partners, our seminars, lectures and program
series brought new experiences and much
knowledge to the community.
Partnering with the Wilton Historical
Society again proved to be golden
for the eighth successive year. This
year’s five-lecture Scholarly Series
was entitled The Gilded Age and was
made possible through the generosity
of an anonymous benefactor and
several individual sponsors. The Go
Green Speaker series, in partnership
with Wilton Go Green, included six
seminars that highlighted important
environmental issues. Together with
the Wilton Clergy Association and the
Wilton Interfaith Action committee, four
lectures discussed how we can respond to
differences, divisions and conflict. The
Alzheimer’s Association made possible
a panel discussion on the disease and a
seminar on early detection. Working with
the Wilton Newcomers Club, a volunteer
fair brought together 25 additional
organizations seeking help. Additional

INNOVATING TOGETHER
When it comes to innovation, Wilton Library is full STEAM ahead –
since its opening in June 2014, our Innovation Station maker space has
become the community hub for new technology, collaborative learning
and the exchange of ideas. Innovation Station promotes STEAM learning
-- offering classes and one-on-one instruction geared towards Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math education.
Since its opening, this resource has
enabled the library to offer more than 525
programs and opportunities for STEAM
learning. More than 325 people became
certified in VHS-DVD Conversion,
3D Printing, Digital Scanning, Digital
Sewing, Tinkercad 3D Design, Die
Cutting, and Soldering. Many of those
trained have returned to take additional
classes as well as use equipment on their
own.
And word of Innovation Station has
spread – our maker space was the honored
recipient of the Connecticut Library
Association’s (CLA) 2015 Award of
Excellence in Public Library Service.
This annual award honors a public
library that has provided an outstanding
program or service to its community.
As well as making Innovation Station

available to the community, the library
has offered tours and presentations to
several local organizations including the
Wilton Chamber of Commerce, Rotary
Club, Wilton Commons, Stay at Home
in Wilton and Fairfield County Library
Administrators Group (FLAG).
Innovation Station was funded through a
generous grant from the Shoff Foundation
as well as a series of private donations.
Current equipment offerings include
a MakerBot 3D printer, an iMac with
Final Cut Pro, a PC with Adobe Creative
Cloud, a digital scanner, a VHS to
DVD converter, a Cricut Die Cutter,
soldering stations, a 3D Doodler, an
electronic sewing machine, and a variety
of crafting supplies. The space also
has snap and squishy circuits as well as
Arduino and Raspberry Pi components.
For those interested in Manga and comic
illustration, Manga Studio 5 software
is installed on both the PC and iMac.
The newest offering is an Orion 10015
Starblast 4.5 Astro Reflector Telescope,
made possible by the Amadeo Family
Fund. The telescope can be borrowed
free of charge to explore and learn about
the night sky. It comes in a protective
case on wheels and is accompanied by
two telescope eyepieces, binoculars, three
books, a night sky foldout, an LED light
on a lanyard, and a Planisphere.
THE INAUGURAL INNOVATION
DAY
TECHNOLOGY
Creators, innovators, techies, and
artisans all came together when Wilton
Library held its first Innovation Day on
May 30, 2015. The event featured 28
presentations, workshops, demonstrations
and exhibitions throughout the library
with the sole purpose of sharing
ingenuity, “outside the box” thinking,
and do-it-yourself motivation and
inspiration. Makers from around the
region demonstrated and exhibited their
interests, including the Fairfield County
Makers Guild, jet engine turbines
designed by a student, new open source
robotics, a post-disaster balloon for
visually documenting affected areas, and
the Greater Norwalk Amateur Radio
Club. More than 400 attendees of all

ages enjoyed this engaging, fun and busy
day, made possible through the generous
sponsorship of Bankwell in Wilton and
MakerBot™, a 3D printer manufacturer.
LEARNING TO CODE
Using our Innovation Station and
computer lab resources, 5th to 8th grade
students learned the valuable skill of
writing computer code. College and high
school mentors led these sessions, using
training resources provided by Khan
Academy.
All ages participated in The Hour of
Code programs held during Computer
Science Education Week. Four onehour sessions taught coding skills to
150+ people. Throughout the year, a
variety of workshops introduced students
to EV3, ROBOTIC and/or C and C+
Programming Languages. Coding
programs were made possible thanks to
the support of the Amadeo Family Fund.
CRAFTING

book club offered for children in grades
3 – 5 as well as several summer reading
initiatives. Our Ambler Farm partnership
continued with the popular Ambler Farm
Reads program whereby a story time
session and lending library are offered at
the farm.
CHILDREN’S LIBRARY
YOUR PARTNER IN LITERACY AND MORE
A lifelong love of reading and discovery is born
in our Children’s Library. Research shows that
reading spurs on brain development, especially
in the first five years of life. It’s literally brain
food — when kids are read to, their brain cells
are activated and new cell links are formed.
Our 2014 Mythical Magical Summer
Reading Program stimulated kids’
imaginations with wonderful stories
and fun activities while learning about
mythology through different ages and
cultures. Norse Vikings, mummies of
Egypt, Native American totems, Japanese
good luck cats, and Celtic/Arthurian
knights were just a few of the subjects
covered. Drop-in story times and
crafts as well as Wonderful Wednesdays
programs with live entertainment and
animals regaled and inspired many of the
791 summer reading participants. More
than 200 children attended the end-ofsummer award ceremony. Many thanks to
our summer reading sponsors: Subway of
Wilton, The Toy Chest, and Peachwave
as well as donations from Pinocchio
Pizza.

Technology, Engineering and Math

Library. Programs highlighted minirobots Dash and Dot, Squishy Circuits,
3D Printing classes, as well as the
Chemistry of Cooking and Candy,
with support from the Amadeo Family
Fund. Other popular programs this year

Reading is also one of the best activities
to provide ongoing language and literacy
skills. And let’s not forget how reading
aloud connects us in a very personal way.
When we read aloud to kids, we are not
just conveying text. We are saying to
them: “You are important. This time is
for you.”
Early literacy continued to be a core
service of the Children’s Library. Our
popular story times offered read aloud
programs for children from birth through
age six. Our largest literacy outreach is
conducted through monthly visits to five
area preschools including Children’s Day
School of Wilton, Community Nursery
School, Bright Horizons, Leaps and
Bounds, and Zion’s Hill. In partnership
with Wilton Public Schools, Children’s
Library programs included a Nutmeg

BEYOND THE BOOKSHELF
IN TEEN SERVICES
There is no better showcase for our
homegrown literary and performing arts
teen talent than the annual Poetry in
Motion experience. For this year’s 9th
annual event, we received more than 100
poetry submissions, expounding upon the
theme “Breaking the Mold.” Thirty poems
were selected and 26 students performed
these poems aloud through songs, dance,
and musical accompaniment. Wilton
Public Schools continued to be a key
partner in our Poetry in Motion program.
Our thanks go to Middlebrook’s English
department for their student submissions,
the Wilton High School library staff
for their extensive support and the AP
photography class for creating background
photography. Two evening performances
attracted a sellout crowd of 240.
Local teens gave back to the library and
community through participation on
our Teen Advisory Board (TAB). TAB
works with Teen Services by planning
programs, suggesting materials for the
participating in one scrimmage, two
qualifiers as well as coordinating
the successful fundraiser, “Destroy
Your Hard Drive Day.” Additionally,
Singularity Technology created an
amphibious robot which was entered
into FIRST’s annual mini-bot challenge.
Members of the team also presented at
Wilton Public Schools’ annual TechExpo.

Today’s creative and tech loving Wilton teens find a home they
love and the resources they need in Wilton Library’s Teen Services
Department. Teen Services not only provides all the information,
tools, technology and assistance teens require to be successful in
their educational journeys, but also has become the local stomping
ground for teens satisfying their creative appetites.

collection, assisting at library events, and
serving as library advocates within the
community. This year’s TAB group made
gingerbread houses and distributed them
to non-profit organizations in Wilton
including Police, Fire, EMS, Ogden
House, Social Services, and Town Hall.
Technology and tinkering are atop
the list of interests among our patrons
in grades 6 to 12. Open sessions in
Innovation Station fostered creativity
and technology experimentation in a
teens-only atmosphere. Our robotics
team, Singularity Technology, completed
its second season of competition –
Michael & Janet Crystal
New in Teen Services this year was the
Young Makers Club (YMC). A national
organization started five years ago in San
Francisco as a joint project between Pixar,
Make & Exploratorium, there are now
178 YMC chapters nationwide. There is
only one other club in Connecticut. With
the help of mentors, members worked
on self-directed projects throughout the
winter/spring season and then showcased
them during the Library’s Innovation
Day. Final projects included: LED
hand-painted shirt, hacked quad-copter,
LED light cubes, 3D printed city, solar
powered boat, LED light mobile, PiGrrl hand-held game system powered
by Raspberry Pi, wobble-bots, lightfollowing brushbots, and more. Our
appreciation goes to Charlie Romer who
lent his expertise to the YMC as well
as led two teen “Electronic Tinkering”
workshops.

We love seeing you walk through
the doors of 137 Old Ridgefield
Road. However, you don’t always
need to come into the library
to take advantage of our many
resources. They are available to
you 24/7 with your Wilton Library
card through our digital library.
Don’t have your own mobile device? No worries, borrow ours.
This year we added iPod Touch devices preloaded with hot
new audiobooks. For readers on the go, Kindles are available
preloaded with current bestsellers as well as summer reading
selections for students. Through our partnership with the Wilton
Senior Center, our media specialist makes monthly onsite visits
to teach seniors how to download from our OverDrive, Hoopla,
OneClickdigital, Zinio and Naxos Music libraries. Individual
appointments are also always available to anyone needing help
with downloading and streaming.
If digital downloads don’t suit your needs and you are unable to
visit Wilton Library (either temporarily or permanently), our “At
Your Service: At Home” mail delivery of books assists those who
are homebound. In partnership with Brookdale Place of Wilton,
we also deliver a selection of large print books for the facility’s
residents to borrow and read.
MORE ONLINE AND IN-HOUSE IMPROVEMENTS
Our digital resources include access to eBooks, audiobooks,
magazines, music, movies, TV shows, language tutorials as well
as videos to teach you technology, creative and business skills.
Many of these resources are available either in a downloadable
format or through streaming.
Our digital resources continue to grow in quantity and variety.
This year we added Hoopla, giving Wilton residents access to
over 225,000 music albums and over 6,000 movies and TV shows,
all of which can be instantly downloaded to a mobile device. Also
new is Lynda.com, an online learning site that offers more than

offerings were also expanded to include more than 30 titles, all
downloadable through our Zinio online newsstand.

Our online catalog also saw several major upgrades this year
including the addition of OverDrive eBooks, audiobooks and
magazines. Hoopla’s selection of streaming music, TV shows and
movies are also now readily viewable through our catalog. Don’t
see what you’re looking for in the catalog? Now you can ask a
question directly to our reference librarians using the “Ask Us”
tab option.
And if you’re in the library using our computers or our WiFi, you’ll see upgrades there too. The Computer Lab was
reconfigured to accommodate 16 students (up from ten) in a
more productive and efficient classroom style. The library’s
infrastructure was also upgraded with new computer switches,
which allowed us to upgrade our wireless network. Patrons now
have faster Wi-Fi connections and the ability to use more devices

UNITE THE COMMUNITY
Our community shines at Wilton
Library fundraisers. From our dedicated
volunteers, to our generous donors to our
supportive local businesses and sponsors,
these partnerships enable us to pursue
our mission with vigor, commitment, and
success. And, as a happy by-product, we
also have a very good time.

In addition to the annual Friends of the
Library Appeal, special funds and gifts,
and other bequests, our development
team -- assisted by a bevy of energetic,
generous and inventive volunteers -coordinated four major fundraising events
and four book sales. The 15th Annual
Ladies’ Soirée, held in early October,
again proved to be Wilton’s favorite
ladies’ night out. This was our most well
attended soirée to date – more than 200
women enjoyed great food, music, friends,
and a silent auction and a giving tree. In
total, more than $21,000 was raised to
support library programs, collections and
emerging media resources.
Bourbon Tasting Bar organized by our creative committee chairs.
Our event honorary co-chairs were Chris and Tish Brubeck,
longtime supporters of Wilton Library. A fun and lively auction
led by Ira Joe Fisher brought out the generous and competitive
spirit of the crowd. Look for Mr. Fisher again as our auctioneer at
our next fundraising benefit scheduled for April 2, 2016.
A new fundraiser brought Wilton women together this past June
for a Ladies Luncheon. This sold out event featured guest speaker
and local author Elissa Grodin. With their ticket purchase,
each attendee received a signed copy of Ms. Grodin’s newest
book, Death by Hitchcock. The event was generously sponsored by
Bankwell of Wilton and catered by Marly’s Bar & Bistro.
The year’s Sixth Annual Wine Tasting
Fundraiser was held in March. The event
was generously sponsored by Bankwell
of Wilton with New Canaan Wine
Merchants providing a fabulous selection
of wines. Guests enjoyed delicious food
courtesy of Barcelona SoNo, Bianco
Rosso, Marly’s Bar & Bistro, Little Pub,

Ristorante, and Oak + Almond. The
generous spirit of our engaged community
shined bright as old friends mingled with
