The following year, the OSU Insurance Society, which started at The Ohio State University in the early 1960's, petitioned and was chartered as the first Gamma Iota Sigma Chapter, thereafter called Alpha Chapter. At Bowling Green State University, Beta Chapter received its charter in 1967, and in 1969, the University of Cincinnati was chartered as Gamma Chapter. These events marked the beginning of what has now grown into a nucleus of 60 chapters located from California to Washington, D.C., and from Canada to Florida. In October of 2001 with the chartering of our 41st chapter at Fanshawe College, London Ontario, Canada, Gamma Iota Sigma became an international professional fraternity. A Grand Chapter or Executive Committee of Gamma Iota Sigma was formed from the original fraternity planning committee, appointed by the Griffith Foundation. The first Grand Chapter President was Warren L. Weeks, then a Griffith Foundation trustee. It was his commitment to the concept of a national student organization that lead to the eventual formation of Gamma Iota Sigma. There currently exists a Warren L. Weeks, Sr. Scholarship presented each year to a student member. Nominations for the award are made by local chapters. The rationale behind establishing a national student organization, as envisioned by the founders was: 1. A national fraternity has more prestige than a local society or club; 2. It would facilitate communication and participation with chapter members throughout the country; 3. By combining with others, the impact of the fraternity name as a visible entity would be enhanced; 4. By emphasizing scholarship and leadership qualities, ties between the college membership and industry leaders would be developed; and 5. There would be a synergism of academic creativity beyond the boundaries of any given university. The Annual Management Conference was first held in 1973. Since then, many of the local chapters have hosted the conference at least once. The Grand Chapter, initially consisting solely of Griffith Foundation trustees, has now evolved to a distinctly separate organization of insurance professionals, most of whom were members of Gamma Iota Sigma chapters while attending college. -4- SPRING 2016 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK CHAPTER ROLL Chapter Alpha (Beta) Gamma (Delta) Epsilon Zeta Eta Iota School Ohio State University Bowling Green State University University of Cincinnati Orange Coast College University of Alabama Georgia State University University of Georgia Florida State University (Theta) Kappa Lambda Mu Nu Xi Pi (Omicron) Rho Sigma Louisiana State University Arizona State University University of South Carolina University of Mississippi Central Michigan University University of Connecticut - Storrs Mississippi State University Arkansas State University Appalachian State University Temple University 10/19/1975 10/29/1975 10/16/1976 10/16/1976 5/7/1977 2/12/1978 4/3/1978 4/14/1978 4/25/1979 11/21/1980 Tau Upsilon Phi Chi Psi Omega Alpha Alpha (Alpha Beta) (Alpha Gamma) Howard University Ferris State College Ball State University Drake University Eastern Kentucky University Middle Tennessee State University Olivet College Pennsylvania State University University of Pennsylvania 2/4/1981 4/29/1981 4/17/1982 5/1/1982 4/19/1983 3/29/1984 9/23/1986 2/15/1989 2/15/1989 Alpha Delta Alpha Epsilon (Alpha Zeta) Alpha Eta Alpha Theta Alpha Iota Alpha Kappa La Salle University Indiana State University Memphis State University California State University St. Cloud State University College of Insurance Illinois State University Parentheses denote a temporarily inactive chapter. -5- Date Chartered 4/16/1966 11/10/1967 3/11/1969 10/21/1970 3/3/1972 2/24/1973 2/21/1975 10/4/1975 3/15/1989 2/12/1990 2/1/1991 4/26/1991 5/11/1991 11/21/1991 11/21/1991 SPRING 2016 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK CHAPTER ROLL CONTINUED Chapter Alpha Lambda School Southwest Missouri State University Date Chartered 9/30/1993 Alpha Mu Virginia Commonwealth University 4/21/1994 Alpha Nu Ohio University 5/4/1996 Alpha Xi Morgan State University 5/7/1998 Alpha Omicron University of Hartford 2/5/1999 Alpha Pi Baylor University 2/23/2001 Alpha Rho Fanshawe College, London, Ontario, Canada 10/4/2001 (Alpha Sigma) University of Louisiana-Monroe 11/9/2001 Alpha Tau University of North Carolina at Charlotte 2/27/2003 Alpha Upsilon University of Houston 4/11/2003 Alpha Phi Old Dominion University 4/15/2003 Alpha Chi Bradley University 10/2/2004 Alpha Psi University of Central Arkansas 10/8/2005 Alpha Omega St. Joe’s University 6/9/2006 Beta Alpha University of Iowa 4/27/2007 Beta Beta New Mexico Beta Gamma Cal St. Fulerton Beta Delta Utica College 11/13/2008 Beta Epsilon University of Central Oklahoma 11/22/2008 (Beta Zeta) University of North Texas 2/18/2012 Beta Eta Northern Michigan University 4/22/2013 Beta Theta East Carolina University 10/3/2013 Beta Iota Troy University 11/1/2013 Beta Kappa University of Houston- Downtown 3/21/2014 Beta Lambda Butler University 4/15/2014 Beta Mu University of Colorado- Denver 4/26/2014 Beta Nu Kent State University 11/7/2014 Beta Xi St. Mary’s University 11/10/2014 Beta Omicron Columbia University 11/20/2014 Beta Pi St. Thomas University Beta Sigma University of Southern Maine 11/12/2015 Beta Tau University of Pittsburgh 12/06/2015 11/28/2007 2/8/2008 2/19/2015 Parentheses denote a temporarily inactive chapter. -6- SPRING 2016 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK GAMMA IOTA SIGMA SIGMA CHAPTER BACKGROUND AND HISTORY “A Tradition of Excellence” Chartered on November 21, 1980, the award winning Sigma Chapter at Temple University has a proud tradition enhancing the professionalism of students in the Risk Management, Healthcare Risk Management and Actuarial Science programs. Thank you for your generosity, The Sigma Chapter -51- SPRING 2016 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK 2015-2016 CHARITY OF CHOICE Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma is proud to announce our 2015-2016 academic year Charity of Choice, Brave Hearts for Strong Minds. Brave Hearts for Strong Minds raises money for children who have lost an income earning parent and donate to their education funds. Inspired by the late Tom Reilly, we provide families with the support they need to bear the financial aspect of education. Children who have lost a parent face immense and lasting emotional and social hurdles. One of the key struggles for families that have lost a loved one is the ability to provide for the children’s education. Reflecting on Tom’s compassion and friendship, our organization came up with a way to provide opportunities for children in need. Our model is a pay-it-forward network, asking that those families who receive these opportunities help to create opportunities for future recipient families. They do so by working with us to help organize and run future events which benefit other families who have experienced similar loss in their life. Last academic year, Sigma Chapter pledged to raise $10,000 for Brave Hearts for Strong Minds, and exceeded our goal by raising $11,200. Due to the incredible impact we had on these children, the Sigma Chapter has decided to partner with Brave Hearts for Strong Minds again this year. However, this year’s charity goal for Brave Hearts for Strong Minds has been raised to $15,000. -52- SPRING 2016 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK GAMMA IOTA SIGMA SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS -- SPRING 2016 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK SOCIAL ACTIVITIES As a full time student, it can be quite difficult to balance your classes, work, and a personal life all at once.
