I thank you for all of your support, your hard work and your friendship. I also want thank you for giving me the many outstanding board members that I have had the pleasure to work with. They are an outstanding group of professional auctioneers and board members who have made many sacrifices to make our association great. It has been a great eight years and a pleasure to serve this organization. A big “thank you” to Norm and Carol Hunter for hosting our bid calling contest in September, to the auctioneers who participated in the contest and all the members who supported the fun raiser. Congratulation to our new 2009 bid calling champion Frank Bartz, our first runner-up Sam Grasso, and our 2nd runner-up John Roop. I hope you are making plans to attend our winter conference at Rocky Gap Resort, January 7th thru 10th 2009. Tom Weschler & John Roop are working very hard to make this a special conference. Our good friend Steve Proffitt and family will again be with us along with many outstanding speakers. Tom & John are looking for any donations or sponsors to help make this a successful conference. Plan to bring your checkbook and register for the winter conference at our next membership meeting at the Ceresville Mansion on Wednesday December 9, 2009. Thank You to Frank Bartz & John Roop for a very suc- cessful crab feast. Over 80 members & guests attended and had a great time. Congratulation to Ross Rhodes for being selected to become a lifetime member of AAM. Ross has proudly served AAM and the auction industry for over 50 years. On a sad note we lost one of our loyal and dedicated members, Wayne Flannegan. Wayne always had a kind word and was very proud to be a member of AAM and being an auctioneer. Glenn Freeman had a very successful operation and is back full time at work. As I finish out my eight years and two years as your President, I want to especially thank Gladys Ridge who without her help & devotion to AAM I could not have done this job. Also I want to thank Sally for her continued support for our association and our own auction business. Sally is always there by my side to help make things go right. For many of us this has been a difficult and trying year in the auction industry. But as we enter the holiday seasons we can look back on how blessed we are with our health, our families, and our friends. As the new year begins, lets continue to work together so we can all be successful. By George Hunt Recently at the Montgomery County Fair, four AAM members headed by George Hunt, Tom Weschler, Roy Gregory and Skip Isaacs sold 35 cakes for a total of $22,200.00 to benefit the activities of all 4-H members. This event generated the same amount of as realized in many recent years. Roy also sold the livestock at Montgomery and Howard County Fairs realizing only a slight decline over the past several years. George also told the audience that this auction was just one of the many events the AAM members participate in and that our association is glad to contribute to such activities. COLUMN 9 History of Col. Ross Rhodes B orn in Queen Annes County in 1926, Ross Rhodes grew up on the family farm and had to drop out of the 10th grade to help take care of the family farm. He later had a hard time making the decision to become a veterinarian or an auctioneer. So with the farm way of life he decided to take on auctioneering work. On July 6, 1946 at 1:30 pm he conducted his first auction for Mrs. Richards of Churchill, Maryland and was well on his way with the auction business, and has continued auctioneering nonstop for 63 Years. he was almost car jacked he was shaken up so much he complained to the Association and ever since then the State meetings have been held in various county locations around Maryland. In the early years, Ross was an Electrician & Plumber and sold milk tanks to area farmers that were in great demand on the eastern shore. He had sold a lot of milk tanks and won an incentive trip in the late fall of 1964 to Washington, MO to tour the plant that built the milk tanks that he had sold. Col. Ross has conducted many auctions in MD, DE, PA, & NJ and has worked with many other auctioneers across the mid Atlantic. In April 1947 he worked at the Snyder’s auction in Caroline County and was there for 5 years. He had also worked for Ed Hock at Crumpton Auction Sales and Curtis Andrews for 15 years. Ross also helped many young auctioneers get a start and left them sell at various auctions. With the talk in the air of a state auctioneering licensing law coming, (that never came.) Ross figured while he was already in the mid west he would attend the American College of Auctioneering that was conducted by Joe Reese and purchased a bus ticket from Washington, MO to Mason City, IA He stayed at the Stratton Hotel where the school was held for two weeks and returned home on Christmas Eve to 32 inches of fresh snow on the ground. Mr. Michael Fox from the Auctioneers Association of Maryland had invited Col. Ross to join the association. At that time all the State meetings were held at various Baltimore locations and including the Bunny Club (Wow Mr. Ross at the Bunny Club). One evening on the way home from a Baltimore meeting Col. Ross now at age 83 has sold everything under the sun except a train, He has volunteered many countless hours at the Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Show Association, 4-H clubs, various churches, and non-profits in the Queen Annes, Cecil, Talbot, and Kent county areas. In 1997 Col. Ross held the position of Auctioneers Association President. In 1998 was inducted into the AAM Hall of Fame. At this time we would like to present Col. Ross Rhodes a Life Membership to the Maryland Auctioneers Association. 10 S C H O L A R S H I P A P P L I C AT I O N 1 1 Maryland Auctioneer’s Association Scholarship Application Mail Completed Application to: Vickie Freeman 13 Ellendale St. Bel Air, MD 21014 Eligibility: 1.
