He was also the Assistant Editor of the publication ‘IAP

MTC has erected a modern bus shelter with
seats and provision for advertisement banners in Anbu Colony.
It was a long standing demand by the residents of the colony.
The stop had no shelter after the old one was
demolished two years back.
Holi celebrated in the
neighbourhood

Holi, the festival of colours, was celebrated
with religious fervour predominantly by the
North Indians living in the neighbourhood.
A numbers of workers from Bihar employed
in the Metrorail section and other construction
sites in Anna Nagar were seen playing holi
with colours on 18th Main Road, Anna Nagar.
Banduram (a native of Begusarai Village,
Bihar) told Anna Nagar Times that holi is an
important festival in their community and,
even though he was missing his family members that day, he was having a good time with
his colleagues and friends.

was milled 15 days back but is yet to be blacktopped. S. Raman (a nearby resident) told
Anna Nagar Times that riding on the milled
road is difficult and often slippery for two

“It also increases the wear and tear of the
tyres. The entire 6th Street was milled in the
first week of March and thereafter no further
work has been taken up”, he said.

The building has dilapidated to such an extent that it

A temporary shed has been
erected in front of the building
for running the station.
Three Inspectors, a Writer
and Policemen share the shed
to carry on their daily duties.
The TNHB building which
had earlier been used as a
cement godown for many
decades was rented to the
Police Dept. two decades ago
in a not too good condition.
Since then several police
personnel have sustained
minor injuries from cement
blocks chipping off and falling
down from the ceiling.
The Housing Board has
reportedly refused to maintain it because the police
department has not paid the
enhanced rent demanded by
it.
The police department had
been doing temporary repairs
now and then to carry on using
the premises till now.
It is strange that the State
Government with revenue of
thousands of crores of rupees
cannot provide a decent and
safe building for a police
station in an important area
of this metropolitan city.

Sir, An avenue tree inappropriately planted by the

I brought it to the notice of the Zonal Officer, Ward 99 in
May last year followed by several reminders.
An official also visited my house in June last year and
promised immediate action. But to my dismay till date no
action has been taken by the officials to remove the tree.
I have also personally submitted a petition to the
Corporation Commissioner and have lodged several
complaints with Amma Call Center to no avail.
I once again appeal to the Corporation officials to cut and
remove the offending tree to ensure that there is no further

Corporation should monitor E-toilet maintenance
Sir, This letter refers to the news report “E-toilets abandoned” published in Anna Nagar Times last week. (March
20).
Most of the public toilets are not usable because of lack of
cleanliness, electricity and water. Since no efforts are taken
by the local bodies to maintain them, e-toilets remain in poor
condition.
With many people coming to work daily the public toilets
should be of use to the local as well as floating population. A
monitoring system should be put in place to check the
maintenance of e-toilets.

Sir, A garbage bin is kept very close to the compound wall of my house at the junction of
8th Main Road and AI Block 5th Street, Anna Nagar.
Two months back, during garbage collection, the Corporation’s garbage compactor truck
damaged the compound wall of my building. This is the third occasion it has happened.
I had repaired the damaged section of the wall at my cost on the two previous occasions
but cannot afford to do it again. I have been knocking in vain at the doors of the Corporation
officials for the redressal of the problem for the past several months. The location of the bin
is not safe as it is at a blind corner at the junction and poses a danger to motorists.
I request the Corporation officials to make arrangements to repair my compound wall and
move the bin away to a different location so that such accidents do not occur in the future.

Woman arrested for stealing
jewellery from shop

by JJ Nagar Police on March
15 on charge of stealing a 5
sovereign gold chain from the
shop of Maniklal Jain in Paari
Saalai, East Mogappair.
Rikana had purchased
jewellery for Rs. 20,000 from
the shop on March 14.
When Maniklal was showing her models of chains and
bangles, she managed to
distract him and put a 5
sovereign gold chain in her
bag. She left the shop after
paying for the jewellery she
had bought.
Maniklal realized that a 5
sovereign chain was missing
while taking stock at night
before closing the shop.
When he went through the
CCTV footage, he noticed
Rikana hiding the chain in
her bag. He immediately
lodged a compliant with JJ
Nagar Police Station.

Health, Egmore. He had also served as Professor
of Pediatrics in Madras Medical College.

LIFE’S COMFORTERS
When it was beyond doubt that cancer had conquered my wife
Lakshmi and that the rest of the rigmarole was a waiting game for
the final closure, friends recommended the induction of palliative
care by experts in the line to give comfort to the prone patient.
This draw on the inherent quality of kindness in every human
being is about the last cheque drawn from the love factory that
marks the final phase in a patient’s bedridden state but, of course,
without the slightest inkling that the stop light is not very far away.
Luckily for us, the search for quality palliative care led us to
Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust at Lakshmi
Sundaravadanan Hospital on Poonamallee High Road, where Dr.
Subathra and Dr. Asoke Mathew assured us palliative support.
When Dr. Mathew and his team visited our home during the 10week association that followed, Lakshmi was always happy to see
his kind and gentle face and hear his soft, reassuring voice that put
her at ease. After the session with Lakshmi, he and the palliative
care nurse Sona would sit with our family to reassure us regarding
her condition. He would invite questions from us and patiently
answer our doubts. The first few times after the home visit by Dr.
Mathew, I would ask my son Dev to pay the good doctor who took the
load of our shoulders each time he visited. But the good doctor
always used to wave us off saying there was no charge for kindness.
In a world where regular hospitals are run like corporates with a
clear eye on profits, the free rendering of service to the suffering
patients - even those capable of paying the stiff fees normally
charged by big hospitals - looked incredible.
After Lakshmi’s passing away on 29th February, we visited
Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust to donate the unused
medicines and some items of comfort for the patients. Our main
objective was to thank these wonderful people with loving hearts,
who use the profession not as a mere means of livelihood but as a
means of providing care and comfort to those whose lives are
drawing to a close. It is a pity that not many in our great city know
about this humanitarian team of dedicated professionals. May I
pat myself on enlightening readers of Anna Nagar Times and
Mambalam Times about this wonderful group!
