Berkeley!
Bicycle theft is a serious problem in Berkeley, but if
you follow this advice you’ll stand a much better
chance of holding on to your bike:

Bike Paths
Bike paths are separated from City roadways and are
closed to motor vehicles, but are almost always shared
with pedestrians, strollers, wheelchairs, etc. For this
reason they are also known as multi-use or shareduse paths. Always watch out for other path users,
operate at a safe speed, and yield to pedestrians.

Bike Lanes
Bike lanes are on-road facilities designated with striping, pavement marking
and signage. Cars are permitted to use
the bike lane for turning and entering and exiting
parking. Bicyclists may leave the bike lane to avoid
obstacles, turn left, pass other cyclists, or when
going the speed of vehicle traffic.

Bicycle Boulevards
A fourth, more innovative type of bikeway called a Bicycle Boulevard is also
found in Berkeley.
A bicycle boulevard, sometimes
described as a bicycle priority street, is
a street where all types of vehicles are
allowed, but the roadway is modified to
enhance bicycle safety and convenience. Typically these modifications will
also calm vehicle traffic and improve
pedestrian safety. Berkeley’s seven
bicycle boulevards form the backbone
of the City’s network of over 50 bikeways. The bicycle boulevards were
conceived as places where bicycles and cars can
equally share the road. The boulevards are mostly
residential streets, however some sections pass
through commercial areas. Generally there are few
cars on these streets, in large part because of the
pre-existing traffic calming devices that slow and/or
divert through vehicle traffic. In some cases the
bicycle boulevards have bike lanes, but for the most
part the pavement on the boulevards bears large,
unmistakable white pavement legends (pictured
above). The system is further marked using seven
distinctive purple sign types, each sign type serving
a specific purpose. The City’s transportation website

Always lock your frame to something that
cannot be moved or disassembled.
Many people have their quick-release wheels and
seats stolen. Wheels are most secure when
locked with a U-Lock, but a cable will also help
deter theft. For a commuter bike, consider
replacing your quick releases with “slow-release”
nuts and bolts that require a wrench to remove.

Secure your bike at home. Many bikes are stolen
from houses, garages, & back yards.
Old & ugly bikes are less likely to be stolen than
flashy expensive bikes. Consider buying a cheap,
used bike for shorter trips around town.
Record your bike’s serial number (printed on the
bottom of your frame). In case of theft, the serial
number helps police positively identify a bike.

BART trains serve Alameda, Contra Costa, San
Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. Bikes are
allowed on all trains except those shown in the highlighted areas of the BART schedules published in
the All About BART brochure. Bikes are not allowed
in the lead car. Bikes are never allowed on escalators and should never be ridden in the stations.
Bicyclists must be at least 14 years old or else
accompanied by an adult. For more details, pick up

Never ride on the sidewalk, unless it is
specifically marked as a bike route.
Passing on the right can be hazardous.
Motorists may not look for or see a bicycle
passing on the right.
Keep clear of the door zone.
Try to ride a door’s width away from parked
cars. If you have to ride in the door zone, ride
very slowly. You have the right to ride in a
traffic lane if it is too narrow to share with a
car.

Ride a well equipped bike.
Be sure your bike is adjusted to fit you
properly. For safety and efficiency, outfit it
with a bell, rear-view mirror, rack or basket,
lights and reflector. Carry a water bottle, bike
pump and patch kit. Wear a helmet. Keep

Bike detector loops are wires embedded in the pavement that sense the
presence of small amounts metal and
help bicyclists safely cross signalized
intersections. This map shows intersections where bike detector loops have
been installed. When you approach a
red light at one of these intersections, look on the
pavement for a white pavement marking of a cyclist
between two short vertical lines (as shown on the
sign at right). You must stop your bike on top of the
marking to trip the signal. It should change within 90
seconds, but often much quicker. Problem with a

Numbered Streets
A good lock is worthless if you don’t use it
properly. Always take a few extra seconds after
locking-up to make sure you didn’t make a silly
error, like not looping through the frame or not
closing the lock all-the-way. These are common
mistakes!
Bay Bridge Bicycle Commuter Shuttle operates
during commute hours on weekdays only between
the MacArthur BART station and the Transbay
Terminal. Bicyclists are taken over the bridge in a
14-passenger van towing a trailer equipped with 14

Newer, high quality U-locks are still among the
most theft resistant. These locks are most secure
if you can fill the space within the U. Be sure not
to use an older U-lock with a cylindrical key.
AC Transit provides bus service between Alameda
and Contra Costa Counties with service to the San
Francisco Transbay Terminal. All AC Transit buses
are equipped with bike racks. Racks hold only two
bikes and you must wait for the next bus if they are
