JOB DESCRIPTION
HEATING/VENTILATION AIR CONDITIONING/REFRIGERATION
MECHANIC
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, to perform skilled mechanical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of
heating ventilation and air conditioning equipment and other work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS




















services and repairs rooftop package units
services and repairs boilers, including hot water and steam
installs, services, and repairs HVAC/R controls
monitors and programs energy management systems
installs, services, and repairs hot water heaters and related work
services and repairs building heating/ventilation air conditioning systems
replaces valves, fan gaskets, filters, and belts
uses various testing equipment to locate defective parts and makes necessary
repairs and adjustments
installs switches, gauges, thermostats, valves, and tubing
repairs pneumatic, electronic, or electrical control systems, hot and cold water
pumps, gas valves and air compressors
services, repairs, and adjusts heating and ventilation equipment; adds refrigerants and lubricants
orders materials and supplies
maintains records and prepares reports on duties performed and materials used
schedules and performs preventative maintenance duties
performs other related duties as required

service and repair cafeteria kitchen equipment, including ice machines, steamers, oven/stoves,
dishwashers
incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of this job

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
ABILITY TO:
 meet the physical requirements of the job including ability to be respirator qualified
 be trained in lead, asbestos, and PCB awareness
 EPA certification to purchase and handle refrigerants as outlined in Section 608 of the Clean Air Act
KNOWLEDGE OF:


the principles, methods, equipment and techniques used in the journeyman HVAC/R trades
the health and safety regulations pertaining to repairing, maintenance and construction methods,
equipment, and chemicals of HVAC/R trade
SKILL TO:







perform skilled work in the maintenance and repair of heating ventilation and air
conditioning/refrigeration equipment
follow oral and written directions
establish and maintain appropriate logs and records and prepare written reports as requested
communicate effectively in both oral and written forms
maintain inventory and stock quantities at proper levels
establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of
required duties
read and understand blueprints
POSSESSION OF:
 an appropriate California Operator’s License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles is
required.

EXPERIENCE
Three to five years of experience as a journeyman heating, ventilation, and air conditioning/ refrigeration
mechanic including repairing and/or installation of Invensys, Robertshaw, DMS 350A, DMS 3500 control
systems, free topology communications networks, Lon Works based programmable controllers and Micronet.
EDUCATION
Ability to read, write, and do math calculations at a level necessary to perform the duties of the position.
