TYPE CI: Among the many features of this 2 hour fire rated
cable is the fact that it does not need to be installed in conduit.
This product passed the UL2196 fire test and fire hose test
without being installed in conduit and therefore was given the
designation of CI (Fire Alarm Circuit Integrity Cable) as defined
in Article 760 of the National Electrical Code. Whether installing
in conduit or not, this feature can provide considerable cost savings over other 2 hour rated installations that typically require
fire-rated walls and strict conduit support spacing standards.
Meets survivability requirements and NFAC.
Both conductors are black with words 1. Black & 2. Red.

CORRA/CLAD™ MC CABLE
• CORRA/CLAD™ Corrugated Aluminum Sheath
• Separator Tape
• Fillers
• Type TFN, TFFN or THHN Insulation
• Copper Conductor
UL LISTED MC CABLE
Corra/Clad™ is constructed in accordance with Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., standard
for Metal-Clad Cable (UL 1569). Corra/Clad™ meets or exceeds interlocked MC cable.
Corra/Clad™ can be used everywhere interlocked MC cable can be used plus additional
places MC cable can’t be used.
HEALTH CARE FACILITIES
• Corra/Clad™‘s outer jacket is an approved grounding means of a listed cable
assembly and employs a continuous, gas/vapor tight metal sheath.
• Corra/Clad™ is permitted for use in hospitals and health care facilities, including all patient care areas per Article 517-13(a) and (b). A properly sized ground
must also be a part of the listed assembly.
• When Corra/Clad™ is ordered with a separate ground the green ground wire is
marked “ISOLATED GROUND COND.”
• For Health Care Facility wiring Corra/Clad™ has quickly become the preferred method
of wiring for these facilities. (Consult local authorities for special inclusions or restrictions.)
FIRE RESISTANT
• Due to its solid fill construction, smoke can not chimney through the continuous
sheath. This lack of oxygen makes Corra/Clad™ and Metal Clad squared fire resistant.
Corra/Clad™ may be used in a plenum area per Article 300-22(b) of the NEC.
FIRE/CLAD® MC CABLE
• Our Fire/Clad® MC Cable is Corra/Clad™ cable with a red ink coloring on the
aluminum sheath to designate the cable as part of a fire alarm system. Fire/Clad®
and Corra/Clad™ is dual rated as MC Cable and as FPL Cable.

Optical fiber consists of three basic structures:
the core, cladding and coating. Transmission
occurs through the glass or plastic core. Light
waves are transmitted down the length of
the fiber by way of the interaction between
the core and the cladding. The cladding provides a lower refractive index at the core
interface which causes reflection of light
exclusively within the core. Multi-layers of
plastic are applied to provide fiber protection.
The coating on the glass fibers enables them
to be handled and processed into cable form.
There are two types of fiber relative to the
paths that the light rays, or modes, travel
within the fiber core:
Fiber
Structure

Core
Cladding
Coating
Multimode and single mode. Multimode
fiber cores are classified as either step or
graded index, depending on the refractive
index. Step index multimode fiber has a
uniform core and an abrupt change in refractive index at the core/cladding interface.
In graded index multimode fiber the core
contains many layers of glass, each with a
lower index of refraction.
FIBER OPTIC CABLE
BASIC FACTS
ADVANTAGES
The light modes taking longer paths travel faster than the modes taking the
straighter paths. This allows for all the light modes to be received at the
same time. The main characteristic of single modefiber is that only a single
light light ray, or mode, is transmitted down the core. Since the light pulses
do not overlap, distortion is eliminated.
Graded index fibers are commercially available with core diameter/ cladding
diameters of 50/125, 62.5/125, and 100/140 microns. Single mode fibers
have a smaller core, typically 8.5µm, but also have 125µm cladding diameter.
Coatings are available from 250 microns to 900 microns.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Attenuation
Loss of signal power between
points. In optical cables, attenuation is a ratio of input power
vs. output power, measured in
decibels per unit length, usually dB/km.
Backbone
A high-speed transmission
system used to connect relatively distant points. Backbone
networks can be used to join
autonomous networks within
buildings or between different buildings.
at different times, causing the
light pulse to spread. This chromatic dispersion is expressed
in picoseconds (of dispersion)
per kilometer (of length) per
nanometer (of source bandwidth). It is the sum of material
and waveguide dispersion.
Cladding
The layer of material, usually glass, that immediately
surrounds the fiber core. The
cladding is usually coated with
another material to provide
protection when handling.
Bandwidth
The information carrying
capacity of a fiber. The bandwidth for a given wavelength
is the lowest frequency at
which optical power has
decreased by 3 dB and is
expressed in MHz-km.
Core
The central part of the glass
construction through which
light is transmitted.
Bend Radius
The radius of curvature that
an optical fiber cable can
bend without causing harmful effects on the optical or
mechanical performance of
the cable.
Dielectric
Non-metallic. All-dielectric designs are inherently non-conductive; all-dielectric cables
contain no metal and are lightning resistant.
C h r o m a t i c
Dispersion
Different wavelengths travel
along an optical medium at
different speeds. Wavelengths
reach the end of the medium
®
78
Cut-off Wavelength
The wavelength at which a
single-mode fiber transmits a
single mode of light.
Graded Index
A core refractive index profile
that varies with the radius of
the core.
Loss Budget
The total acceptable loss for a
given system from transmitter
to receiver. Includes cables,
FIBER OPTIC CABLE
GLOSSARY OF TERMS
splices and connectors.
Material Dispersion
Pulse dispersion due to the
variations in a material’s
refractive index as a function
of wavelength.
Microbending
Minute but sever bends in
fiber that result in light displacement and increased loss.
Most microbending can be
avoided by the correct selection of materials and proper
cabling, handling, and installation techniques.
Mode
A path of light through a
fiber.
Mode Field Diameter
In single-mode fiber, the
region in which light propagates is larger than the glass
core diameter. This mode
field diameter is a measured
value and often listed as a
requirement with core diameter in fiber specifications.
Numerical Aperture
In fiber optics, the sine of
half the angle over which a
fiber can accept light, it is a
function of the relationship
between the refractive index
of the core and that of the
cladding.
Optical Time Domain
Reflectometer (DTDR)
An instrument that measures
transmission characteristics
of fiber by sending a pulse
of light down the fiber and
measuring the light scattered
across the length and reflected
back from the end as a function of time. Used to measure
attenuation, point discontinuities and fiber length, as well
as to find breaks.
Refractive Index
The ratio of the speed of light
in a vacuum to the speed of
light in a material. Also called
Index of Refraction.
Step Index
A refractive index profile
characterized by a uniform
refractive index within the core
and a sharp decrease at the
core-cladding interface.
Waveguide
Dispersion
Dispersion caused by the fact
that light travels at different
speeds in the core and cladding of single-mode fibers.
Zero Dispersion
Wavelength
In single-mode fibers, the
wavelength at which the effects
of chromatic dispersion and
waveguide dispersion are lowest, thus providing the greatest
information carrying capacity.

THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE
MADE SIMPLE
To aid in the prevention of fires as well as electric hazards there exists a
published set of guidelines commonly referred to as the National Electric
Code. This code is designed to ensure the safe installation of wiring and
equipment in commercial and residential locations.
In 1987 the NEC introduced listing requirements governing communication
and power limited circuit cable. These requirements defined the acceptable
fire resistance levels, initiation of fire and flammability characteristics.
It is essential to be knowledgeable of these standards when specifying or
installing any cable.
Although there exists multiple codes, we will list and attempt to simplify this
vast complexity of listings.
Using the NEC
There are five main articles that refer to communication and power limited cables.
Within each article you will find:
- installation application and environment
- cable construction
- required markings
- purpose

Within each article you will find that there are certain permissible substitutions.
Ordinarily this applies to using cables further along in the hiarchy of listings, for
a lower listed application. Please refer to our NEC substitution charts to determine
allowed substitutions.

THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE

Installation Environment
In addition to cable circuit type, consideration must be given to the installation
environment. The NEC defines four major categories for such.
Plenum- This is defined as an area such as ducts, plenums or any space used for
environmental air without conduit. Cable must have adequate fire resistant and low
smoke producing characteristics. The highest environmental listing available, this is
an acceptable substitution for the other three listings.
Riser- This is a listing designed for a vertical run as in from floor to floor. Cable must
have fire resistant characteristics and be capable of preventing the spread of fire
between floors. This listing is acceptable for the other two listings.
General Purpose- This listing encompasses general purpose installations other than
risers, ducts, plenums or other air handling space. Cable must be resistant to the
spread of fire. This listing is acceptable for the one remaining listing.
Restricted Applications- This flame resistant cable is for limited use in dwellings
and in raceways. Cable must be installed in non-concealed spaces under 10’, fully
enclosed in conduit of raceway, or have a diameter less than .25” for a residential
dwelling. This listing is the lowest available and is not an acceptable substitute for
any other.

The following chart explains the NEC cable hierarchy and will give you a “picture”
view of how this all fits together. The chart starts with the higher listed cables at the top
descending to the lower listed cables. Following the arrows will allow you to find what
listing can be substituted for others.
