About Griplock® Signage Systems

GRIPLOCK® SIGNAGE SYSTEMS
Griplock has supplied cable-based sign and banner hanging hardware and systems to the signage industry for 15 years, but until now we
have never put all our accumulated knowledge and experience inside one cover.
The following pages show the many options available from Griplock® for suspending anything from light weight foam core to wood, wood
composites, plastics, metal and beyond. We’ve broken it down into 6 sections. Please read all of them to understand the product
thoroughly and to make ordering easier. Refer to page 21-22 for terminology, weight charts, how to order, etc.
SIGNAGE WEIGHTS AND MATERIALS
We’ve divided this catalog into 3 types of signage based on their weight - Light, Medium and Heavy. Of course, the weight of the sign
depends on the size of the sign. You will have to be the judge of that.

THE GRIPLOCK® GRIPPER - WHERE IT STOPS, IT LOCKS®
The Griplock® gripper is a fully adjustable cable suspension device for use with 7x7 and 7x19 aircraft cable only. It automatically locks
anywhere on the cable and can be moved up or down at the touch of a finger. Three ball bearings sit in three of the six grooves on the
circumference of the cable so the pressure on the cable is evenly distributed. As a result, the gripper holds about 60% of the published break
strength of the cable. Based upon that 60%, Griplock recommends a 5:1 safe working load (SWL).

• Insert the cable through the plunger into the gripper mechanism. Slide the gripper
to the desired position.
• To move the gripper down the cable, depress the plunger with your fingertip and
move the gripper to a new position. Release the plunger to lock.
• The 3- or 6-ball gripping mechanism is spring-loaded and allows the gripper to
move freely UP the cable. The gripper cannot move DOWN the cable unless the
plunger is depressed. The plunger cannot be depressed while there is any weight
on the system.

About Griplock® Signage Systems
®
IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME you’ve worked with Griplock® products, please read the following information carefully:
• Use only 7x7 or 7x19 uncoated galvanized or stainless steel aircraft cable.
• When feeding cable through a gripper always allow cable to pass 1” beyond the gripper housing.
When cutting excess cable always leave 1” of cable showing.
• Cable should be cut using purpose-built cutters, as shown opposite.
• Cable will generally not fray when cut. In case of fraying apply a drop of super-glue or otherwise re-seal.
• Adhere strictly to the weight load guidelines for gripper / cable combinations shown on page 22.
TL-CUTTER
• The Griplock® Signage System is not recommended for permanent outdoor use. It should not be exposed to
wind or water or allowed to oscillate continuously. Avoid placing signage in chemical laden environments such as indoor swimming pools
and some manufacturing environments. Do not place signage close to HVAC vents where they may be exposed to air currents.
• Cables should not enter or exit couplers and grippers at more than a 5 degree angle. For angled applications use the jointed or swivel
couplers and grippers shown on page 17.
GRIPLOCK® CABLE
Griplock cables are made of galvanized or stainless steel. These cables are factory fitted with terminals and loops. Unless
specified, Griplock terminals are guaranteed to the full published break strength of the cable, however when used in conjunction with
grippers, cables have a break-strength that is less than that of the cable alone. Please refer to the Weight Load Guidelines on page 22 . In
all cases Griplock recommends a STATIC safe working load (SWL) of no more than 1/5 of the minimum break strength of the gripper / cable
combination.
Griplock recently introduced the thinnest cable in its line-up, a 1/32” cabling system known as Wisp™.

®
Suspending products with cables is modern and elegant, but when you have something small or lightweight you want the cables and
grippers to match. Wisp™ provides the minimalistic look you want while delivering the strength you need. It's the thinnest lightweight
cable suspension system on the market; perfect for your lightweight signage.
A Wisp™ system includes 1/32” cable and any Type 10 or Type 12 gripper.

How to Order, Terminology
®
Griplock Grippers:
Grippers are designed to work with cables as thin as 1/32” and as thick as 1/4". In this catalog we show four gripper types and four compatible cable sizes that are best suited for most sign-hanging applications. Grippers are mostly of nickel-plated brass. SAT in the p/n indicates
a satin chrome finish. For detailed line drawings please visit our website or contact us.
Gripper types:
Type 10: works with 1/32” or 1mm cable. Eg. 10Z-832i
Type 12: works with 1/32” to 3/64” cable. Eg. ZF-12X2
Type 15: works with 3/64” to 1/16” cable. Eg. ZF-15ZZ, 15Z-GA
Type 25: works with 1/16” to 3/32 cable. Eg. DG-25-TC-300-SAT
Cable Couplers:
The cable couplers in this catalog accept cable terminals 80, 87 and 71 as shown.
Couplers with 1420 in the p/n have an internal 1/4-20 thread that is used to attach them to studs or bolts.
Cables: To determine the cable you need for your application consider the weight of the sign. A sign that weighs 20 lbs and is supported
by two cables creates a 10 lbs load on each cable. A 20 lbs sign supported by a single cable creates a 20 lb load. Consult the chart below to
determine whether your sign is Light weight, Medium weight or Heavy weight; then consult the weight load chart on page 22. Give serious
consideration to the type of ceiling you are suspending from: Structural, drywall or T-bar. For information about drywall and T-bar ceilings
see pages 13 and 22.

pounds and reflect the cable industry standard 1:5 safety ratio for static loads. Weight load guidelines and other specifications are for
illustration purposes only. They should not be construed as a warranty that the product or system will conform. Each purchaser is solely
responsible for determining that (1) the product and/or system is suitable for the intended application, and (2) the product and/or system
complies with all federal, state and local safety and trade laws and regulations. Installers are cautioned that the integrity of the structures to
which these components are attached, and the fasteners used to attach them, are critical to the integrity of the overall system and should
therefore be evaluated by a qualified engineer or installer.
Pendant Connections to T-bar
T-bar is vertically supported to structure by 12 gauge wires, and in seismic areas by additional bracing wires at 45 degrees from the T-bar to
structure. The closer your signage is to these supporting wires the stronger the connection will be. There is no official information available for
signage and other non-lighting pendant loads suspended from T-bar, but walk into almost any store with this type of ceiling and
inevitably there will signage suspended from the T-bar and often from the Tile itself. Griplock does not recommend the latter method. If a
single T-bar-supported sign weighing no more than 5 lbs and suspended at two points between the intersections of either the main or cross
runners of a T-bar ceiling, Griplock recommends that no further support is necessary. For signage weighing in excess of 2.5 lbs per cable,
Griplock recommends a secondary support to structure from each supporting cable by means of a wraparound T-bar clip and wire or cable
braces. See pages 13 and 19.
Pendant Connections to Drywall
Drywall is hung from joists that may be 24” or 16” apart. The drywall may be attached to the joists using drywall nails or drywall screws
set at variable distances apart. The drywall itself may be old or damp and crumbly. All these things affect the ability of a drywall ceiling to
suspend a weight safely. Griplock recommends the advice of a qualified engineer or installer.
