MAC Products has met the challenge for new, properly en splicing kits and has supplied great numbers in various configurations at all voltages. The tran oil to impinge on the polymeric insulation of the newer, more modern cable. Oil is generally del especially at the elevated temperatures that splices operate at while under load. The contaminat insulation will hasten its breakdown under voltage due to chemical changes and swelling. No particular oil stop barrier is suitable for all conditions. It is, therefore, necessary to fabricate the oil barrier in the field that will be the most reliable under the conditions presen single application of a special tape. The latest technology is available in MAC Transition Kits. In addition to its oil›stopping function, the properly designed transition splice must provide termination of the shield on the polymeric cable. Provision must also be made for wiping the pro covers each splice onto each polymeric cable. The polymeric cables are not usually lead sheathed must be air tight. Many transitions from existing cables to newly installed cables require the connection of two copper to aluminum. MAC Products, a fully integrated connector manufacturer since its founding, for aluminum to copper connections both in low voltage and high voltage applications. These conn minimize the galvanic interaction between the two metals and provide the optimum in high voltage insulation and shielding of the transition splice. Each connector, no matter what configuration, barrier to prevent the cable oil from the paper insulated cable from flowing through the strands cables. With all of these functions of a transition splice and all of the basic materials used to acc ultimate concern of compatibility of materials must be dealt with. It is in this area that MAC’s cable splicing, and more importantly, in cable transition splicing. Choice of the materials to p carefully with the objectives of ease of installation and trouble free service. To remove a hard compound from a steel pail, the first be heated in a vertical column along the side to provide a vent which al The pail should escape during regular heating. Unfortunately this procedure is not always followed with splices and their helpers have been seriously burned. The steel container is often plac a hot spot in the center of the compound. When the surface compound becomes pourable, t trapped gases increase the danger of a flash or explosion. MAC Products has eliminated this potential problem by packaging the harder compounds quarts. Figure A shows our unique spiral seamed construction. The container is capped purity and freedom from contamination. The container walls are stripped away easily by seam as in Figure B. This package is specially treated so it releases cleanly from the pure insulating compound is then placed into the compound kettle and melts into the surr eliminating the danger of flashing or explosion. FIG. A FIG. B FIG. C CP›11 This compound is based on an asphalt derivative. It is medium soft physically, and is N with oil impregnated paper insulated cable at voltages over 15 KV. CP›11 finds its grea insulated splices at all low primary voltages. This compound has relatively low power strength. CO›21 This resin based compound is used where oil migration must be kept to a minimum or stopp altogether. It will not dissolve in oil even at elevated temperatures. For this reason recommended for use in oil impregnated paper insulated cable splices at all voltages and recommended on applications over 15 KV. It can also be used for a general purpose oil s material. CX›31 A heavy mineral oil used both in impregnating paper insulated cable and cable splicing. the best medium for insulating cable splices and terminations of paper insulated cable b requires elaborate oil reservoir fittings and equipment to maintain a positive oil press all times. The equipment also requires periodic inspection to assure that the reservoir not run dry. The additional attention required has all but removed this insulating med from active use. It is not recommended for polymeric cables. This doubly refined and purified oil finds wide acceptance and use as a flushing oil when engaged in splicing terminating paper or varnished cambric insulate cable. MAC PRODUCTS, INC. P.O. It can be used to tie cables together, protect insulation when soldering and in extra high voltage applications, it is used to protect the entire splice and keep it oiled during other operations. Made from carefully selected cotton fibers, this tape is supplied 4, 5, 7 and 8 mils in widths from 1/2 inch to 3 inches. COTTON YARN Cotton yarn is utilized to fill the corners in a properly stepped paper insulated cable. These free untwisted strands of pure cotton help to smooth the contour of these steps and effectively change them to a long smooth taper. This is necessary to provide a surface that can be easily taped with no voids in the corners. MAC Cotton Yarn is provided in 1/4 ounce spools each providing approximately 80 feet. PAPER PASTERS Supplied in 2 to 3 inch widths and 12 inches long, this item is used to limit solder flow when making wiped joints and sealing lead sleeve pour openings. MAC SOLVENT WIPES MAC Solvent wipes are lint free, pre›moistened cleaning toweletts packed in a leakproof package. They are used for the same purpose as the MAC Cleaning Fluid, but by keeping evaporation to an absolute minimum and eliminating any possibility of spillage, MAC Solvent Wipes lend themselves more to an application where a limited amount of cleaning preparation is required at one time. Eliminates the need for cleaning cloths. CLEANING FLUID MAC Cleaning Fluid is a clear colorless solvent used to clean cable insulation prior to taping. It is also used to remove excess flux during soldering operations. Particularly suited for removing extruded semi›conducting material that sticks to cable insulation, MAC Cleaning Fluid is non›flammable and has no flash or fire point by the ASTM closed and open cup test methods. It is recommended that the cleaning fluid be wiped dry to evaporate before applying tape. Available in 2 ounce bottles, pints, quarts, gallons, and solvent wipes. MAC Splicing Cement is black with a medium heavy consistency and is suitable for all polymeric insulations including rubber, polyethylene and EPR. Available in 4 ounce, 8 ounce, pints, quarts and gallons. The 4 and 8 ounce can contain a brush top. MAC SEAL DUCT SEALING COMPOUND MAC Duct Sealing Compound is a synthetic putty›like plastic compound used wherever an opening must be closed against the intrusion of water. This lends itself to manhole duct sealing and packing around cable entrances of all kinds. The material exhibits excellent adhesion to all surfaces. The very stable properties of this compound are augmented by the fact that there is no oil bleeding or exudation at normal temperatures. This compound has exceptional compatibility with all insulations (including the polyethylenes) and cable jacketing materials, and will remain plastic indefinitely . This latter feature contributes to its unlimited shelf life. MAC Duct Sealing Compound is available in 1 lb. and 5 lb. packages. SOLID GROUND STRAP Fabricated of high conductivity copper and tin coated, this 3/8 wide ground strap is used for shield or sheath grouding. It is sturdy but flexible, and is easily solderable. Approximately equal to a #6 conductor in circlar mil area, it affords excellent ground protection. Catalog Number SA›381 available in standard lengths of 2 ft., 25 ft. and 100 ft. FLEXIBLE GROUND STRAP Woven of high conductivity, annealed, tinned copper wire, this braided ground strap provides maximum flexibility and ease of handling when installing ground or shield continuity. No heat is necessary for application. This versatile material has excellent moisture resistance even when immersed for long periods of time. It dries with a glossy black non›tacky surface. It may be used alone but it is most effective when painted between layers of a fibrous tape. Anhydrous Tape is particularly suited for this application. MAC P & B Paint saturates and encapsulates the fibrous tape to form a very effective protection system for splices. Available in pints, quarts, gallons and five (5) gallon containers. P & B Paint remains flexible over a wide temperature range. TEST CAPS (Live End Caps) MAC Test Caps are used to insulate and protect the ends of cable that will be in service temporarily. These test caps, which cover the entire range of cable diameters presently used, are supplied in MAC Live End Cap Assembly Kits. They are available separately; however, each test cap provides a tapered end to facilitate applying the additional insulation required for the higher voltages. In addition, each test cap has an integral flange to serve as an end stop for taping and to space the conductors in a three conductor live end. MAC Test Caps are made from an oil resistant, high dielectric, low moisture absorption polymer and provide superior electrical characteristics. In the past, splicers would fashion a piece of lead to support and space the cables. They would then make a lead wipe to the cables and the piece of lead to seal the splice. MAC Products Crotch Pieces reduce the wide variation of sizes to just a few. Cast of virgin lead, these crotch pieces provide for every combination of cable entry and reduce the necessity of hand shaping and forming in the field.
