Department Summary
The Generation Systems Electric & Control Systems team at Consumers Energy is a small team responsible for the
overall system health of the electrical systems within the generation fleet. With oversight of generating plants, hydro
plants, Ludington Pumped Storage, and gas compression stations, the team conducts equipment reliability planning
through risk analyses, condition assessments, and more. Regular travel among generating facilities throughout the state
and working in the field is required.
Job Description/Responsibilities

The Electrical Engineer / Power Engineering Technology Specialist will have the overall responsibility for the reliability and
life cycle management of electrical systems and equipment to ensure assets are operating to meet the safety, reliability,
and compliance goals of the company. Specifically, the Engineer/Engineering Specialist will perform work similar to a
Project Manager in planning work (resources, schedules, project implementations, etc.) that adheres to industry
standards. He/she will be responsible for developing RFQs/RFPs, reviewing bid packages, and work closely with vendors
to schedule work. He/she will coordinate extensively with external vendors to conduct research, validate maintenance
plans, costs, etc. in order to build accurate information into the Long Term Financial Plan.
He/she will be expected to support the following equipment:
• Medium and Large Voltage Industrial Motors
• Medium and Low Voltage Switchgear
• High and Medium Voltage Transformers
• Utility grade Emergency Power Systems
• Generators
• Protective Relaying
• Environmental Quality Controls
Key Responsibilities include:
• Providing support to Plant and Component Engineers to help resolve system and equipment problems
• Assessing systems in accordance with the System Health Assessment Process
• Developing and maintaining system notebooks for key systems
• Performing system monitoring and ensuring that actions are taken to ensure reliability; this includes:
o Monitoring operational trends, predictive monitoring trends, preventive maintenance and inspection results,
equipment and condition indicator data, life-cycle input, repeat maintenance, input from operations, input from regulatory
and strategy organizations, etc., to identify performance issues and/or needs for action
o Ensuring that corrective actions are identified, justified, appropriately scheduled, and completed
• Developing strategies and justifications for equipment life-cycle management and to improve system and component
performance consistent with the corporate business plan to ensure safety, compliance, and reliability; this includes:
problem identification; development of solutions; development of cost estimates, justifications, and timing requirements;
and providing input to the Financial Planning Processes

• Maintaining short-term and long-term system plans
• Maintaining compliance with Asset Compliance Programs such as NERC Reliability and Cyber Security, Dam Safety,
Gas Code, Arc Flash, etc.
• Optimizing predictive monitoring programs, evaluating data (routine performance testing, operational trends, vibration
analysis, thermal (IR) analysis, oil analysis, etc.), and taking appropriate actions based on results
• Optimizing preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and utilizing data/trends to adjust Project Management
strategies
• Leading Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for equipment problems
• Providing remote monitoring support (deep dive review and response)
• Providing overhaul, refurbishment planning, and shop/field oversight for equipment as needed
• Providing recommendations for spare parts inventories for system equipment
• Providing Work Management Support
• Assisting Plant and Production Engineers to prioritize Notifications and Work Orders
• Ensuring open work orders are appropriately scheduled to ensure system reliability
• Assisting in outage and work window planning
• Coordinating Capitalized Emergency Equipment needs
• Acting as Project Single Point Of Contact (SPOC) and/or Sponsor for projects
• Coordinating NERC relay testing
• Leading annual insurance inspections (FM Global)
Requirements/Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program;
extensive industry-specific work experience (5+ years) in lieu of specific degree may be considered
• 2+ years industry-specific experience
• Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
• Exceptional technical writing skills
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office and computer analysis programs
• Strong problem solving and analysis skills
• Ability to effectively plan, organize and set work priorities
• Demonstrated leadership ability
• High degree of self motivation
• Strong ability to work as an individual contributor as well as within a team-centric environment

This position will be located at the Karn Weadock Plant in Essexville, MI and requires approximately 25% travel
(consisting of day trips with possibilities of extended stay of up to one week) to other locations within the service territory.
Position will be filled at the appropriate salary grade from the Engineering or Engineering Technical Analyst job family
based upon the skills, knowledge, and experience of the selected candidate

construction observation, and field investigation. Provide engineering services with accuracy, integrating all applicable
governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on time and under budget. Use computer assisted
engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents. Understand
and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects
Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the
information appropriately. Assists in client contact and communication. Utilize effective oral and written communication
skills to provide technical expertise to coworkers, clients, customers, government entities and the public. Public
involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional
speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings. Provide all engineering services in a legal
and ethical manner. Resolve all customer complaints in a timely manner. Serve as onsite project representative. Reviews
operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents.
Hours and Travel
This position requires the individual work a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with 85% of time spent in the
office or specific field locations. Approximately 25% travel is required to job sites and project meetings; this could be
significant at times dependent upon specific work tasks. Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as
necessary to meet deadlines. Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.
