This training course will provide those who work on, maintain or repair machinery with the skills to identify the need for, and implement appropriate lockout/tagout procedures. This person is the Safety Observer who makes sure everyone’s safety is accounted for. SAFETY OBSERVER (DUTIES OF A STANDBY PERSON) 20 UNIT STANDARD 17596 - Demonstrate knowledge of safety observer responsibilities in the workplace. Level 3, Credits 8 AVAILABILITY Public and on-site CANDIDATES Permit issuers and receivers, safety observers, safety watch personnel, health & safety advisors and plant operators. DURATION 2 days. May be reduced to one day depending on prior learning and current unit standards held. COURSE BRIEF A programme identifying relevant legislative responsibilities, controlling areas, awareness of environmental changes, site procedures, permit control, hot work, confined space, height & electrical work, establishing emergency procedures and rescue team work and equipment. People credited with this unit standard are able to identify: criteria where the Safety Observer is required to control, monitor and maintain safety for activity; hazardous environments and activities requiring safety observer control; the safety observer responsibilities, and emergency response measures. DURATION 1 day COURSE BRIEF Plan for an on-site health and safety compliance audit on a construction site. The course is based upon requirements of the ACC’s Workplace Safety Management Practices audit tool and covers a variety of requirements, evaluations, planning and management. Upon completion, each student will undertake a Health and Safety Audit on their own workplace and present a 1.5 hour presentation of their findings. This will take place eight (8) weeks after they finish the course. HEALTH AND SAFETY CONTRACTOR AUDITING QUALIFICATION Certificate of Competency in Contractor Auditing will be issued to each successful student. DURATION 1 day COURSE BRIEF The objective of this course is to provide trainees with a detailed understanding of contractor health and safety management. It covers legal overview, evaluation and selection of contractors. The course will review the process for managing and monitoring performances and the various options & procedures for conducting monitoring on observed unsafe behaviour. Upon completion of the course each student will undertake an internal audit of their workplace. Eight (8) weeks later they will produce a 1.5 hour presentation about their findings.
