LAMP POST MAINTENANCE AND LIGHT REPLACEMENT ALL MAINTENANCE SHOULD BE PERFORMED BY A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN CAREFULLY INSPECT THE DEVICE FOR DAMAGE BEFORE INSTALLATION, IF FOUND DAMAGED, RETURN TO PLACE OF PURCHASE FOR A REFUND OR EXCHANGE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR A DAMAGED COMPONENT NOTE!! ELECTRICAL SHOCK MAY CAUSE SEVERE ELECTRICAL BURNS OR DEATH !! “TEST” THE TEST DEVICE OR METER FOR PROPER OPERATION BEFORE USING IT TO VERIFY THAT ALL CIRCUITS HAVE BEEN DE-ENERGIZED MANY LIGHTS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD ARE ON AT ALL TIMES – THIS IS CAUSED BY A MALFUNCTIONING ELECTRIC EYE SOME LIGHTS ARE NOT OPERATIONAL CAUSED BY A MALFUNCTIONING ELECTRIC EYE, BAD BALLAST, OR BURNT OUT LIGHT BULB. IF YOUR LIGHT BEGINS TO FLICKER CAUSED BY A FAILING BULB, REPLACE IT IMMEDIATELY AS THIS WILL OR MAY CAUSE THE BALLAST TO FAIL. LIGHT BULBS ARE EITHER 35 WATT OR 50 WATT HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM BULBS DEPENDING ON THE PARTICULAR POST. YOU WILL NEED TO LOOK AT YOUR SPECIFIC BULB. MOST OF THE EARLY INSTALLATIONS WERE 35 WATT. THE LATER ONES MAY BE 35 OR 50 WATT. BALLASTS, BULBS AND ELECTRIC EYES ARE LOCALLY AVAILABLE FROM MENARDS, HOME DEPOT OR A LIGHT FIXTURE SUPPLY HOUSE. LOCAL COVENANT RESTRICTIONS REQUIRE LAMPS SHALL BE LIT DURING HOURS OF DARKNESS TO HELP ENHANCE NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY. 1) BEFORE BEGINNING MAINTENANCE OR CLEANING BE SURE THE LAMP POST IS DE-ENERGIZED 2) TEST THE METER FOR PROPER OPERATION ON A KNOWN ENERGIZED CIRCUIT 3) SOME LAMP POSTS HAVE AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET NEAR THE BASE. SOME LAMP POSTS HAVE A SEPARATE SWITCH TO TURN THE LIGHT OFF, NOTE! THIS SWITCH MAY OR MAY NOT TURN THE ELECTRICAL OUTLET OFF. DE-ENERGIZE THE LIGHT AND OUTLET WITH THE CIRCUIT BREAKER/S LOCATED IN THE ELECTRICAL PANEL ONLY!! 4) ONCE THE PROPER CIRCUIT BREAKER OR BREAKERS HAVE BEEN LOCATED AND DE-ENERGIZED, PLACE A PIECE OF RED TAPE ACROSS THE BREAKER AND LABEL IT – “DO NOT TURN ON” “DO NOT RESET” OR WHATEVER YOU DEEM APPROPRIATE TO KEEP ANOTHER HOME RESIDENT FROM ENERGIZING THE CIRCUIT ! 5) VERIFY THE ELETRICAL OUTLET IS DE-ENERGIZED 6) CLEAN OUT THE UPPER PORTION OF THE LIGHT. YOU MAY ACCESS THIS AREA BY REMOVING THE UPPER SCREW. THE TOP MAY THEN BE REMOVED. VACUUM OUT THE DEAD BUGS AND CLEAN THE LENSES. 7) DETERMINE YOUR LAMP WATTAGE IF REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED. A SPARE BULB ISN’T A BAD IDEA. YOU CANNOT REMOVE THE RIBBED LENSE AROUND THE BOTTOM OF THE BULB. IT IS PRESSED INTO THE BASE !! 8) IF REQUIRED, YOU MAY NOW BEGIN ELECTRIC EYE AND/OR BALLAST REPLACEMENT. DEPENDING ON THE SYMPTOMS PREVIOUSLY DESCRIBED, REPLACE THE EYE OR BALLAST AS REQUIRED. 9) REMOVE THE ENTIRE UPPER PORTION OF THE LAMP POST. LOOSEN THE 3 SET SCREWS AND REMOVE THE UPPER SECTION. THE UPPER ASSEMBLY SHOULD BE SUPPORTED BY A CHAIN. IF NOT, USE A COAT HANGER, WIRE, OR WHATEVER WORKS TO SUPPORT THIS ASSEMBY. DO NOT HANG THE UPPER ASSEMBLY BY THE EXISTING ELECTRICAL WIRES !!! “TEST” THE BLACK WIRE TO THE WHITE WIRE TO ENSURE IT IS DE-ENERGIZED “TEST” THE RED WIRE TO THE WHITE WIRE TO ENSURE IT IS DE-ENERGIZED DISCONNECT THESE WIRES AND REPLACE THE WIRE NUTS OR TAPE THE EXPOSED WIRES TEMPORARILY 10) CAREFULLY REMOVE THE NUT FROM THE ELECTRIC EYE AND PULL IT OUT OF THE POST. YOU WILL NEED TO DO THIS IF YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE BALLAST. 11) THE BALLAST HANGS INSIDE THE POST SUPPORTED BY A CHAIN. IT MAY NOW BE PULLED OUT TO INSPECT AND CLEAN. YOU MAY SEE A BLACK SUBSTANCE LEAKING OUT OF THE BALLAST INDICATING IT HAS FAILED. 12) STRIP THE EXISTING WIRES ENSURING THAT THEY SHOW NO CORROSION OR OXIDATION FOR A SOLID RECONNECTION. REPLACE THE BALLAST OR EYE AS REQUIRED. 13) THIS IS THE INFORMATION FROM THE OLD ELECTRIC EYE. AN EQUAL OR HIGHER RATED EYE MUST BE USED….. 14) AFTER COMPONENT REPLACEMENT, REASSEMBLE FIXTURE IN REVERSE ORDER. 15) SLIDE THE OLD OR NEW BALLAST INSIDE THE POST SUPPORTED BY THE CHAIN. 16) USE A LONG SCREWDRIVER, RULER, STICK OR WHATEVER WORKS TO REINSTALL THE EYE. TAPE THE EYE TO THE SCREWDRIVER AND “FISH” IT BACK INTO ITS MOUNTING HOLE. REPLACE THE NUT AND GENTLY TIGHTEN IT !!! 17) INSTALL THE UPPER ASSEMBLY AND TIGHTEN THE THREE SET SCREWS EQUALLY. 18) TURN ON THE DE-ENERGIZED CIRCUIT BREAKER/S 19) TEST THE OUTLET FOR POWER IF APPROPRIATE 20) WAIT FOR DARK - SIMPLY COVERING THE EYE WILL NOT USUALLY SUFFICE TO TEST THE FIXTURE NEED MORE INFO OR HAVE PROBLEMS…. CALL ME. THANKS, MIKE
