HYDROSTATIC PROFILE GAUGE
SISGEO’s Profiler is a hydrostatic profile gauge designed to monitor
settlement or heave beneath embankments or foundations. The
Profiler system consists of a settlement probe, a liquid-filled tubing
connected, and a reservoir mounted on a tripod.
The probe is pulled meter-by-meter through an access pipe embedded
in the embankment or foundation soil. The probe halted each meter for
a pressure reading, which is equivalent to the difference in elevation
between the reservoir and the probe. A digital display on the reservoir
shows the pressure reading in mm of liquid head. Summing the
readings yields the profile of the access pipe. Changes in the profile,
found by comparing current and initial profiles, indicate displacement
(settlement or heave).

OPERATING
PRINCIPLE
The system consists of a permanently-installed, horizontal access tube (HDPE, minimum internal
diameter 45 mm), a tripod-mounted reference tank, and a probe which is connected to the reservoir via
a liquid-filled tube. The probe contains a pressure transducer that measures the head of liquid created
by the difference in elevation between the probe and the reservoir. The initial profile of the access tube
is calculated by accumulating the pressure readings taken at one end of the access tube to the other.
Settlement or heave is calculated by comparing subsequent profiles, obtained in the same way, to the
inital profile.

INSTALLATION
A trench, (0.5 to 1 m deep and 0.3 to 0.5 m wide) is excavated along the profile to be monitored. The
bottom of the trench is covered with a layer of fine sand (150 to 300 mm thick), which is levelled and
compacted. The access tube is placed on the sand layer and covered with further layers of compacted
sand. Concrete blocks are placed at both ends of the tube and surveyed to provide an absolute
reference. A steel pull cable is placed within the access tube to provide a means of pulling the probe
through the tube.
