Fact: No one ever joined NAMI that did not have a loved one that has a mental illness.

When you talk with a member that has been working with their love one’s case for awhile, you can see that they have acquired a wealth of information.

Information acquired by making mistakes and taking time.

The School of Hard Knocks has a very high tuition!

Diagnosis

How is the diagnosis

Arrived at?

66

The Doctor arrives at a diagnosis based on subjective observations of the subject’s behavior.

And your reports.

The DSM may be used

Crash Course 67

Crash Course 2016 68

Example:

Lithium can do damage to the kidneys.

So there should be a periodic blood draw to determine the level in the blood. Many doctors, for their own reasons don’t call for the blood draw. The Family Case Manager should insist.

The desired level is approximately .09

If it is as low as .03 or lower, it is not likely to a therapeutic dose. If it is over .10 and up, it could be doing damage to the kidneys.
