Model No: SAD20R/400 Protection is provided between each phase and neutral and the primary and secondary devices are connected together in parallel to form a N + 1 redundancy configuration. I.E. if the primary module should self sacrifice the secondary module will switch in to provide a level of protection until the sacrificed module is replaced. Neutral to ground module Protube C is a gapped surge protective device and provides protection between neutral and protective earth. (N-PE) Figure 1 shows the SAD20PR/400 To be installed in internal AC distribution board. The SAD20R/400 consists of seven modules: Primary 20KA silicon avalanche diode (SAD) module. (Blue module on each phase) Redundant metal oxide varistor (MOV) module Protec C. (White on each phase) GAS tube, neutral to ground module Protube C. (White) NORTHERN TECHNOLOGIES SA TT OO TT AA LL W EE RR PP OO W PP RR OO TT EE CC TT II OO NN SS OO LL UU TT II OO NN SS WARNING Verify the SPD unit is the correct voltage configuration for the installation. All units must be installed and prepared only by qualified personnel in accordance with all relevant local electrical safety standards. Dangerous voltages may exist near the SPD modules. The SAD20R/400 must be mounted in a suitable rain-proof enclosure when used outdoors or a suitable IP rated enclosure when mounted indoors. The enclosure should provide adequate electrical and safety protection, prevent ingress of moisture and water, and allow visual indication to be inspected. All instruction must be followed for proper and safe operation. MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS (Figure 2) 1. The SAD20R/400 along with 3 single pole 20 amp C-curve or 1 x 3-pole 20 amp circuit breaker should be mounted inside the internal AC DB as close to the main incoming circuit breaker as possible. 2. The SPD should be mounted on a 35mm DIN rail. 3. The SPD and circuit breakers will use 14 standard positions (Ways) in a standards distribution board or (250mm). 4. 2-Way busbar connects the secondary (MOV white) and primary (SAD blue) together at the bottom of each of these modules. 5. A seven way neutral busbar connects all seven modules together at the top terminals. 6. A set of 3 single pole or 1 x 3-pole circuit breakers is pre-wired to the SPD from the bottom terminals of circuit breakers to bottom terminals of the phase SPD’s. WIRING INSTRUCTIONS (Figure 2) 1. Use minimum 10MM2 multistrand panel wire. 2. Use bootlace ferrals on the ends of cables to avoid wire strand breakage. 3. Connection of Phases of SPD. Terminate cable between phase 1 SPD circuit breaker and bottom of site circuit breaker phase 1 terminal. Terminate cable between phase 2 SPD circuit breaker and bottom of site circuit breaker phase 2 terminal. Terminate cable between phase 3 SPD circuit breaker and bottom of site circuit breaker phase 3 terminal. NB: Should SPD not be fitted with a dedicated set of circuit breakers: Terminate cable between phase 1 terminal (bottom) of SPD and the phase 1 terminal of site circuit breaker. (Load side = Bottom terminal on circuit breaker. Terminate cable between phase 2 terminal (bottom) of SPD and the phase 2 terminal of site circuit breaker. (Load side = Bottom terminal on circuit breaker. Terminate cable between phase 3 terminal (bottom) of SPD and the phase 3terminal of site circuit breaker. (Load side = Bottom terminal on circuit breaker. 4. Terminate earth connection between bottom terminal of Protube C module (Last module on left) and the internal AC BD earth bar. 5. Terminate neutral connection between internal AC DB neutral bar and any one of the top terminals marked N. The cables should be inserted in the terminal with the SPD neutral bar lug, therefore in that terminal there will be the neutral cable and the neutral neutral bar lug. 6. Cable lengths between the SPD and the interface points (main CB’s, neutral bar & earth bar) should be as short as possible to a maximum of 500mm. 7. Avoid 90º bends in cables. NORTHERN TECHNOLOGIES SA TT OO TT AA LL W EE RR PP OO W PP RR OO TT EE CC TT II OO NN SS OO LL UU TT II OO NN SS OPERATION 1. To avoid damage to surge arresters switch surge arrester circuit breakers on after final commissioning / maintenance of site generator. 2. Turn dedicated SPD circuit breakers to on position. 3. The “Power” LED on each of the primary (blue SAD) modules will illuminate. 4. In the case of failure a RED flag will appear in the alert window of the effected module. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR 1. The SAD20R/400 requires no preventative maintenance. 2. Protec C & Protube C modules, if the RED alert flag is present in the window on any module, that module must be replaced to maintain original protection levels. 3. For SAD20R module, if Red LED is on that module must be replaced. 4. Power to the SAD20R/400 must be turned off before replacing damaged modules. Replacement of the SAD20R/400 modules must be done by qualified personnel in accordance to all relevant electrical safety standards and procedures. NB: To avoid damage to surge arresters switch surge arrester circuit breakers on after final commissioning of site/generator. For further info contact NTSA Tel: +27 11 787 3787
