Given our nation’s persistent economic malaise, it’s not surprising that stories
of prosperity are few and far between. This is what makes the University of
New Haven’s story so compelling.
Consider some startling facts. In an era when many private colleges and universities are
scrambling to fill their classrooms, enrollment at UNH has skyrocketed. In the past decade,
the size of the incoming class has increased an amazing 154 percent. Since 2005, full-time
undergraduate enrollment has grown by 80 percent, and this fall we welcomed the largest
and most academically gifted first-year class in the University’s
history. We now have more than 6,400 students from across
the nation and around the globe.
Clearly, UNH has never been more popular. Responding to
this surge of popularity and achievement, our alumni and
friends are more eager than ever to contribute to our success.

Your support made fiscal year 2011 the most outstanding
fundraising year in the University’s history. We raised
$10.5 million, surpassing the $10 million mark for the
first time. That figure represents a 36 percent increase
over the prior year. Mirroring our upward trajectory as
an institution, annual fundraising at UNH has grown
more than 54 percent in the last five years.

MARK CECCORULLI,’89 MBA
There is no doubt in Mark Ceccorulli’s mind that the MBA he earned from the University of New Haven
helped his career with a Fortune 500 company, the Goodrich Corporation, a leading global supplier of
systems and services to the aerospace and defense industry. He has been with Goodrich for 25 years,
ascending through the ranks to his present position as director of precision optics.
“I gained a new-found sense of confidence in my abilities with my MBA,” he says. “And the diversity
of students – especially those with international backgrounds – helped me acquire a whole new
perspective on business.”
He gives back to his company by mentoring young professionals, providing them with the benefit
of his experience. He gives back to UNH through two endowed scholarships established in memory
of two men who influenced him greatly: his father and his former UNH professor and advisor,
David Morris.
What Motivates:
Mark remembers what it was like to work full time, attend school and take
care of a family. Several years ago, he put his son through law school.
“I’m amazed at the debt some of the students have to take on,” he says.
“If we all gave back, we could make it easier on those kids.”
Why He Helps:
In honor of his former advisor, professor and mentor, Mark established
the David Morris Scholarship Fund. “I thought Dr. Morris was brilliant,”
says Mark. “I was fortunate enough to be able to tell him that a few years
into my career, when I realized how much of an impact he’d had on me.”
At a recent campus event, Mark saw firsthand the results of his generosity.
“I went to the Endowed Scholarship Luncheon,” Mark says, “and I got to
meet the bright students receiving the scholarships. What a difference we all
can make by giving back.”

Major: Hospitality and Tourism Management
Involvement: Laura, a member of the Honors Program, has earned a spot on the Dean’s
List each of her semesters at UNH. She is a member of Eta Sigma Delta (Hospitality Honors
Society) and Sigma Beta Delta (College of Business Honor Society) and is president of
the UNH chapter of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality. Last summer,
Laura worked with her favorite professor, Juline Mills, to examine pest control
management practices in the lodging industry as part of her Summer Undergraduate
Research Fellowship.
Hope for the future: “My career plans are to work my way up to be the general
manager of a hotel property. One day I hope to own my own hotel. I am also considering
teaching hospitality courses at the university level.”
Why she is grateful: “Both of my parents are high school math teachers.
My older sister earned a degree in education and is now a teacher. My younger sister
started college this fall to study professional writing. Our entire family has
a true appreciation for higher education, and we are very thankful for the
financial support we have received.”

For John and Judy Mitchell, the University of New Haven is a family affair.
The husband and wife duo both have worked at UNH for 30 years. John is a telecommunications systems
administrator in the Information Technology division, and Judy is the administrative secretary for the
Department of Forensic Science. John received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at UNH,
and the couple’s three children are alumni as well. What’s more, Judy’s two brothers are UNH grads,
and her mom worked in the Financial Aid office for 20 years before retiring from the University.
What Motivates:
Judy’s mom, Evelyn Sherwood, began the habit of giving back to UNH. The Marvin K. Peterson Library
was built during her tenure here, and she donated funds to name a seminar room in her parents’
memory. She also gave to the Friends of the UNH Library Fund for many years.
“We want to continue the family tradition,” Judy says, “and keep it going as long as we can.”
Why They Give:
Judy and John support many causes at UNH, though primarily they give to
the scholarship fund. “Our kids received a wonderful education here,” Judy says,
“and we would like to help others in return.”
Giving back is a “reinvestment,” says John, who worked in manufacturing
before coming to UNH. “Being in education, you get to see the development
of a product – the students – and want to invest in it,” he says.
The Mitchells have maintained lifelong relationships with scores
of students, attending weddings and receiving baby announcements
from alumni with whom they have stayed connected.
“They’ve become our extended family,” says Judy.
“It’s the gift that keeps on giving.”

Involvement: Carolyn volunteers at Stamford Hospital and at various nutrition-related
programs and events to gain experience in the field. She has earned a spot on the Dean’s List at
the end of both of her semesters at UNH and has been inducted into the Omicron Nu Kappa
honor society, which recognizes academic excellence in nutrition and dietetics.
Hope for the future: “I graduated from UConn in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree
in nutritional sciences. I decided I needed to go back to school to continue my education.
I am now studying to become a registered dietician.”
Why she is grateful: “I loved studying nutrition as an undergraduate, but I didn’t
do as well as I could have academically. UNH has given me a second chance to prove
to myself and others that I can excel in this profession. I am doing better than ever,
and I know UNH will open many doors for me in the field of nutrition. Through this
support, I am well on my way to achieving my academic and personal goals.”

When she began volunteering at her local fire department at the age of 16, Karen Facey, ’98 B.S.,
didn’t realize she was taking the first step toward a rewarding profession. “None of my relatives
had worked as a firefighter,” she says, “yet I had my parents’ full support, and I was ready to
explore a field that interested me.”
Fire sciences ignited a passion in her, and Karen, now fire marshal for the town of
New Milford, Conn., sought a degree program that could further her career.
After comparing the University of New Haven’s fire science curriculum to other
universities’ programs, she knew UNH was the right place for her. “There were
few such programs in the country,” says Karen, “and UNH, which was close
to home, had a great reputation.”
What Motivates:
As fire marshal, Karen is responsible for enforcing codes,
inspecting facilities and investigating fires, among other duties.
She has supervised several student interns from UNH, and
she sees, firsthand, that the University continues to provide
a superior education.
“UNH is still very much in the field, providing valuable
experiential education to the students,” says Karen.
“They have stayed on the cutting edge, and that means
graduates better understand many aspects of fire sciences.”
Why She Helps:
Part of her job is educating the public, so guest lecturing at
UNH in undergraduate and graduate classes was a natural
extension that benefits her alma mater. In addition to
making gifts to the fire sciences program, Karen serves
as vice president of the Alumni Board. “I gained a great
deal from my UNH education,” she says. “I have a young
family, and I’m juggling a lot, but UNH is a ‘must-contribute’
charitable organization for me.”

Growing up in Bridgeport, Conn., Michael Ambrose, ’84 B.S., spent
most of his time playing sports and, as the first male in his family
to graduate from high school, he gave little thought to any
career aspirations.
“However, when I discovered that engineering encompassed my love
of drawing and math, I thought I would give college a try,” he says.
“Turns out, I loved every minute of it.”
A 27-year employee of Sikorsky Aircraft, Mike is now vice president
of engineering vehicle systems and holds two U.S. patents for his
engineering work.
What Motivates:
Aspiring to succeed in college, Mike declined several track athletic
scholarship offers. “I really wanted to concentrate on school and not
be distracted by the demands of college athletics.”
However, his good intentions ran low when his funds did. It felt
like a gift from above when the UNH track coach called and said,
“We want to give you a tryout.” With a partial scholarship in hand,
Mike took this second chance and ran with it. He went on to set
seven UNH track records — all of which stand today — and still
managed to graduate summa cum laude. In 1991, he was elected
into the UNH Athletics Hall of Fame.
Why He Helps:
“It’s really hard to major in engineering and to compete in any sport,” Mike says. “My wife and I established
an endowed scholarship to help relieve the burden for an engineering student to also pursue a collegiate
career in track.”
His loyalty to UNH runs deep, as Mike sits on the Alumni Board, works with engineering students on campus
projects and regularly speaks to classes about the field. “I want them to know how important it is to gain
communication and business skills as well as technical skills,” he says, “and know that all three skills are
essential to success.”

Hope for the future: ”My future plans go beyond obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
I plan to pursue graduate studies in structural engineering with an emphasis on bridge
design. Structural surveys conducted in previous years have confirmed that the majority
of current bridges need to be modified or replaced. As a result, there will be a demand for
professionals who have an expertise in bridge design.”
Why he is grateful: “I have been a Connecticut resident since my family came to
the United States from the Philippines seven years ago. Because we have not been in the
U.S. that long, my family has not been able to set aside enough money to pay for a college
education. Despite these financial shortcomings, I plan to persevere to earn my college
degree. This financial support will greatly help me realize my goals.”

coordinator of the University’s Veteran Outreach, a campuswide initiative to
foster a “veteran friendly” campus. He also served as a technology intern at
Southwest Airlines.
Hope for the future: “My goal after graduating is to find a job where
I can make a difference. At some point in my career, I would like to teach.”

Why he is grateful: “I served active duty in the Air Force from 2002 to
2006. When my contract was fulfilled, I decided to go back to school to pursue
an education so I would be better prepared to help myself, my family and less
fortunate people in the community. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree
in 2010 and decided to pursue my master’s degree at UNH. I am now in my last
semester, and my veteran’s benefits were due to run out during the semester.
This caused a good deal of stress knowing that I worked so hard and made it so
far, yet I still faced the possibility that I would not be able to finish the program.
This scholarship makes a world of difference and puts me that much closer to
my goal.”

David Harding has been a faculty member at the University of New Haven for 18 years. Now a full professor,
David is chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering within the Tagliatela College of
Engineering. During his time at UNH, he has taught courses and conducted research on air pollution and
environmental applications, and has been involved in the recent development of the multidisciplinary
engineering curriculum for undergraduates.
A Purdue graduate with a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Northwestern, David has been a registered
professional engineer for over 20 years. He spent nine years in private industry and has been a consultant
to a variety of businesses and organizations.
What Motivates:
“When I was in private industry,” David says, “I worked with
many young engineers who were right out of college, and
I was mentoring them early in their careers. That experience
got me interested in education. Here at UNH, we offer
a top-notch chemical engineering program with a caring
and committed faculty. I want to help sustain it. While
I already devote significant time and effort to the program,
I believe it deserves my financial support as well.”
Why He Helps:
“I responded to the Tagliatela College of Engineering
Equipment Fund Challenge Match,” notes David, “which
was established by the Board of Governors. I had been
thinking about making a gift for a while, and when the
Board created this $1 million initiative to leverage gifts
for much-needed laboratory equipment, I thought it was
the right time.”
