Decatur: One of
Georgia’s Best Cities
The City of Decatur was incorporated on December 10, 1823, just one year after the incorporation
of DeKalb County, and was designated as the
county seat. The city is named for Commodore
Stephen Decatur, who won fame as a naval hero in
his battles against the Barbary pirates at Tripoli.
The City of Decatur is four square miles in
size and has a population of 17,800, though its
daytime population swells to 22,000. Decatur has
more than 200 restaurants and shops and was
named one of the south’s “Tastiest Towns” in 2012
by Southern Living magazine, and Best Intown
Mall Alternative by Atlanta Magazine in its 19th
annual “Best of Atlanta” competition. Decatur
was also named one of the state’s 10 “Cities of
Excellence” by the Georgia Municipal Association and Georgia Trend. The award honors the
best managed, most livable cities in Georgia. Most
recently, the WalkScore.com website recognized
Decatur as Georgia’s most walkable city.
The DBA logo
The “shingle” represents what we do as
business people in Decatur, regardless of occupation. A shingle connotes a small-town way of conducting business, trading with friends, neighbors
and passersby.

The acronym “DBA” also stands for “doing business as.”
The association’s initials are set in the same logotype used in the City of Decatur logo, familiar to
all within the community.

President’s Letter
Dear DBA Members,
It is an honor to lead such a lively, fun and communitydriven organization. I have brought a new focus to our
DBA President
organization, and a theme for 2012 – Doing Things. Each Wendy Watkins
month at our member meetings, there will be a new “piece
of the puzzle” introduced with the intention of giving you tips on how to get different results in your business this year.
And we are on track to do things differently. The grassy area by the bandstand
will be reseeded this year, so there will be no events held in that part of the
square this year. That means that our popular DBA events like Concerts on
the Square, Blue Sky Concerts, Decatur Beach Party, Easter Egg Hunt and the
Bonfire will be held in alternative locations. What a great opportunity to do
something different.
As a volunteer organization, we thrive with the support of our members. I appreciate all of you who give your time and money to DBA each year. We are
always looking for more assistance with our meetings and events. Whether you
have three hours or one hour a week, or just one hour a month, we can use your
help. Volunteering is a great way to meet people, network your business and contribute to your community. Go to page 4 to see which committee is the perfect
one for you.
I am looking forward to getting to know more of you this year. If you would like

Who Is DBA?
Decatur Business
Association
Mission
DBA is a membership organization representing businesses,
professionals, financial institutions, arts groups, associated agencies, organizations and private individuals who share an interest in promoting the city of Decatur. We work with the Decatur Downtown Development Authority as advocates
for the business interests of the city and promote Decatur as a unique, thriving,
small-town experience in metro Atlanta.
Membership
The Decatur Business Association is made up of more than 450 businesses and
organizations that are interested in the development of the city of Decatur. We
work closely with the city and the Decatur Downtown Development Authority as
advocates for the Decatur business community.
Monthly Meetings
The DBA meets the fourth Tuesday evening of each month at different locations
within Decatur (with the exception of November and December). Networking
begins at 5:15 and the program begins at 6 p.m. Check www.DecaturDBA.com

The Foundations of Business
Seminars are offered quarterly by
the Decatur Business Association
to help business owners create
and maintain strong foundations
for their businesses. Key topics
include finances, marketing, leadership and operations.
Sessions are held at sites around the city. Admission is free for DBA members
and $20 for non-DBA members. The sessions fill up quickly and reservations are

Free Legal Services
For DBA Members
The Decatur Business Association is pleased to offer free legal consultation as
a new benefit for its members. The new Legal Hotline Service is designed for
small business owners with legal questions or issues that require only a brief
consultation with an attorney. Many DBA members are small business owners
who, due to cost considerations and time constraints, don’t address these issues
in a timely manner, which tends to make legal issues much more difficult to
resolve.
This program offers consultation directly with an attorney for
20 minutes per calendar quarter at no cost. The program
will be operated by the DBA’s counsel, Mark G. Burnette, of
the law firm, Joyner & Burnette, P.C., in conjunction with the
DBA. Mr. Burnette specializes in small business-related legal
services.

Decatur is all about community! Here are some ways to get involved in the DBA
and support our wonderful city.
Join
With your membership, you are invited to attend our monthly meetings at various
locations around Decatur where you can network, eat and hear updated news
about what is going on in your local community. As an added benefit, members
can send news and events through a weekly DBA e-newsletter, which is emailed
to more than 875 business owners and residents in the Decatur area. Your business will be automatically listed in our online directory, and each January current
members are included in the printed directory. Come and be part of DBA today
and reap the benefits of membership!

Sponsoring a meeting or event or purchasing a display ad in the DBA directory is
a great way to not only support the community, but gain some great exposure for
your business. Each monthly meeting is sponsored by a member through monetary contribution or an in-kind donation of food and/or beverages.

of December’s “Terrific Thursdays,” when local
merchants offer refreshments, special deals, and

The main attraction at the DBA’s January Meeting

The Decatur Business Association meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month.
Meetings are free to members and their guests. Business card exchange/networking begins
at 5:15 p.m. Program starts at 6 p.m. Program topics vary, and meetings are held at different businesses throughout Decatur. Members receive monthly reminders indicating
