Tiger Challenge is a unique academic summer program that engages the interest and imagination of students entering kindergarten through 8th grade. Exemplary teachers integrate math, reading, writing, science, and social studies around stimulating themes designed for each grade level.
Critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills are emphasized in a community of motivated students. Experience a series of programs that capture interest and create engaging hands-on projects that result in valuable preparation for the upcoming school year. Course themes and content are developed based on state curriculum standards.
Early Morning Welcome
Early arrival is available for students who are enrolled in
Tiger Challenge. At no additional cost, students may arrive as early at 7:30 a.m. Registration not required.
TIGER CHALLENGE: Kindergarten
This popular two-week course is designed for children entering kindergarten with an emphasis on preparing them for the routines and activities that they will encounter in their first kindergarten classroom. They will participate in bi-weekly science experiments, on-campus field trips, and hands-on activities as they learn fun strategies for reading, writing, and math. We offer this program in June and in July with a similar structure with different activity themes to keep the experience exciting for students who want to enroll in both sessions.
PLEASE NOTE: Students must turn 5 years of age before
September 30, 2016. We welcome students 6 years of age who are entering or repeating the kindergarten year.

Solids, Liquids, and Gases, Oh My!
June 6–10
Young scientists enjoy a fun week dedicated to investigating solids, liquids, and understanding the concept of mixtures. Examine the evaporation process first-hand; conduct investigations to see if common materials either sink or float; and perform jaw dropping experiments with gases! Use your new knowledge to explore sites on the LSU campus, and get a taste of fun mixtures at the Smoothie Shop!
Weather Wonderland
June 20–24
Can it really rain cats and dogs? Or beetles and frogs?
Where do tornadoes and blizzards come from, and why?
Become a meteorologist for the week and identify daily temperatures throughout the world, read rain gauges, and explore different weather tools. Examine extreme weather patterns and conditions, describe the water cycle through illustrations, song and dance, and even create your own hurricane, tornado, and blizzard!
Jr. Naturalist
June 27–July 1
Calling all nature enthusiasts! Foster your appreciation for the environment and inspire a sense of wonder through experiences with the natural world! Engage in hands-on activities, nature hikes, science experiments, and games that will take you outdoors. Learn how plants contribute to life on Earth and hear from professionals at LSU as you fine-tune not only your math and science skills, but your art and cooking skills too!
Making Waves
June 13–17
Explore the amazing concepts of water! Learn how water changes from rain, to ice and snow, and how a river and ocean may be connected. Discover the many uses of water in society while having fun with bubbles, cooking, and creating water projects! Our little hydrologists get to explore water and the oceans through virtual and oncampus field trips.

Have No Fear, I’m an Engineer
July 11–15
So you want to be an engineer? Take your first step in this
STEM course (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) and design fun prototypes, test their effectiveness, and then focus on re-design. Build a house that can’t be blown down, power a car with human wind, and race your boat in the Tiger Challenge Regatta! Improve your math skills as you work in teams to set a budget to create projects, and gain confidence in problem solving. A fun week of field trips and hands-on projects will open your eyes to the world of engineering!
A Walk on the Wild Side

Are you ready to take a walk through the wild and exciting world of animals? Swim with fish and fly with birds! Spend the entire week identifying and classifying animals and their corresponding habitats. Examine underwater wildlife through the use of a microscope, and discover why birds can fly, swim, and stay warm all winter long! Dig through the desert using grid coordinates, excavate fossils, and engage in hands-on projects to describe traits and characteristics of animals A through Z.

Waterway Explorers

From the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Bistineau, get hooked as you explore the local waterways of Louisiana. Dive in and learn about critters and creatures that live in our lakes, rivers, and coastal wetlands. Discover causes of pollution in air, land, and water, and how to become a good steward for our environment. Enjoy hands-on projects, science experiments, expert speakers, field trips, and more. Try your luck at cane pole fishing in the LSU Lakes. See you at the water’s edge!

The Human Body: Head To Toe
June 13–17
When you eat a banana, how exactly does it reach your brain? What do an eggshell and a chicken bone have to do with you? Make “sense” of your body by immersing yourself into the human body systems. Learn to predict height by measuring a single bone, and use the scientific method to explore the world of dissection. Prepare a scientific journal and compare it to the findings of your peers. Create a hands-on interactive digestive system and take a close look at what makes blood so essential for life!
Guinness World Records: Can you Break It?

Back for a second year and with new records to be broken! Do you have what it takes to be a Guinness world record holder? Find out as you explore some of the world’s longest, shortest, fastest and tallest. Spend the week incorporating math, writing, and research into understanding some of the world’s strangest facts.
Challenge yourself to break various records as we create our own competitions when we experiment with records never tried before! Come join in for a record-breaking good time!
The Thrill of Physics

Scream machines! Hang onto your hat and explore the wild world of thrill rides! Tap into your imagination to create crafty construction projects using simple and complex machines. Build a bridge out of popsicle sticks, create a cotton ball catapult, and even participate in a not-so-ordinary egg drop contest. Race your balloonpowered rocket car while calculating distance and time, and learn about force and motion as you build your own amusement park ride!
Math Wizards

Tackle math and have fun doing it! Hands-on activities sharpen mathematical wits and deepen critical thinking, problem solving, and logical-reasoning skills. From measurement and data, to numbers and operations, each day focuses on a different mathematical strand. Put your new skills to the test as you tour around the LSU campus to identify angles of the bell tower, plan a budget for the
LSU Bookstore, measure a football field, and even go on a geometry scavenger hunt!
Super Software Mania

You asked for it and we created it! Gain a basic understanding of how to use the Windows operating system and join us as we navigate Microsoft PowerPoint,
Excel, and Publisher. Use PowerPoint to design a snazzy book report and super science presentations. Excel spreadsheets assist you in creating tables, graphs, and charts. Use Publisher for newsletters, greeting cards or invitations, and learn how the correct software can help you get the job done. Save all of your work this week on a personal flash drive to take home!

Have you ever wondered if what you hear is true?
Let’s find out! Experience a week of fun-filled, handson science as we investigate popular misconceptions the MythBusters’ way. Fact or fiction? You decide by creating experiments to put legends to the test. Does a baseball really have a “sweet spot”? Can helium balloons really carry a person? Dispel common myths through experiments and field trips, and get expert information from professionals in the field. Come ready to bend your mind and bust some myths!
Tiger Challenge Amazing Race

Let the games begin! You and your team are challenged to solve physical and mental obstacles and complete the
Amazing Race. Put your mind to the test, learn new skills and value the importance of working together when you solve clues and achieve objectives related to countries and locations around the world! Each day will present challenges, hands-on projects, science experiments, and field trips. See you at the finish line!
Cracking the Cosmos

Calling all rocket scientists: your expertise and enthusiasm are requested at our Earth-based rocket and space camp! Design, build, and launch model rockets while exploring Newtonian physics and rocket design. Follow in the footsteps of astronauts as you perform hands-on experiments, and learn about living and working in space. Travel to on-campus field trips, and visit science/technology areas that have potential space science applications. Lab coats are optional and safety gear is provided!

July 11–15
Bling and bling! Learn about the history, science, and art of making jewelry. Look back at historic jewelry, investigate how math plays a major role in design, and perform science experiments with metals, clay, minerals and glass. Make beads, transfer prints to make pendants and build jewelry from ancient replicas to modern–day, original designs. Field trips and speakers round out the week that is filled with enough cool jewels for everyone!
Secret Code Breakers
June 27–July 1
Crack codes and encrypt your own secret messages!
In this one-week cryptography course, use your math, science, history, and art skills to discover how top-secret messages were sent years ago and find out how methods have changed today. Learn how to encrypt and decipher a message, create a cipher disk and cipher wheel, and analyze how our nation used secret codes to keep us safe.
Investigate top-secret agencies, and even correspond with an actual NSA code-breaker! Who knows...you might be the one to guard our nation’s top secrets one day!
Zoology for Kids

Hello, Animal Kingdom! Leap into animal biology and learn about the physiology of animals, their behavior and how they interact with species in their environments. Tackle climate change and threats facing habitats throughout the world. Learn about the classifications, migrations and inheritance patterns of animals. Hands-on activities, daily experiments, guest speakers and field trips round out a week that is sure to spark the animal lover in you!

Use robotic technology as a fun and challenging way to explore engineering, electronics, and programming with girl power! Work in teams to design, construct, and program a robot with sensors, and a remote control. Capture the attention of our pet puppy using touch, smell, sight, hearing, and taste to train the puppy to follow your robot to victory. Put your robot to the test at the end of the week as you prove your robot is the best at leading Rover to the finish line!

Raiders of the Lost Artifact
June 20–24
Discover what life was like 5000 years B.P. (Before Plastic) as you unravel the mysteries of Louisiana’s past and take on the role of an archaeologist for a week. Explore how archaeologists piece together clues to answer questions about the past. Learn and practice archaeological field techniques through simulated activities, work with real artifacts in a real archaeology lab, and experiment with primitive technology. Go on field trips to see ancient artifacts and meet with archaeologists to discuss their latest discoveries!
Tiger Hunger Games: The Finale

Welcome to the final round of Tiger Hunger Games!
Whether you survived our previous Tiger Hunger Games or are joining us for the first time, you are in for a week of fun and adventure. Explore the science behind the fiction presented in the Hunger Games series through hands-on, cooperative training. Explore archery, fire, biotechnology, survival skills, and team building. This is the perfect opportunity to learn how the human body works and to explore the levels of biological organization. Study the intricacies of the immune, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and cardiovascular systems! Dive into the body at a variety of levels from cells to organ systems; engage in hands-on projects, lab activities, and field trips; and interact with guest speakers. Refund & Cancellation Policy
• A $20 processing fee is charged for all refunds.
• All refunds must be received in writing and can be e-mailed to precollege@outreach.lsu.edu.
• Full refunds (less the processing fee) will be granted for cancellations received 10 business days prior to course start date.
• If a cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the course start date, a 90% refund (less the processing fee) is granted.
• For residential camps, if a cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the course start date, a
50% refund (less the processing fee) is granted.
• No refunds will be given after the first class meeting.
• LSU reserves the right to cancel courses. If the course is canceled, we can transfer you to another course or refund your entire payment.

Tiger Challenge: Supervised lunch will take place at the
LSU Lab School cafeteria from 12:00 noon–12:45 p.m.
Students registered for a full-day program should bring a lunch and drink.
Tiger U: Students are responsible for their own lunch and may either bring lunch or purchase lunch from the LSU
Student Union. Students are not allowed to leave campus during lunch, and are asked to stay in the vicinity of their building.
