If you are interested in volunteering for The Ohio Celtic Festival to be held August 12th-14th please contact: Linda Walsh at 216-538-1358 or email iacpres99@aol.com. I am looking for people to help work the entrance gates and ticket booths. The shifts run anywhere from 3 to 4 hours depending on where you volunteer. All volunteers receive a festival t-shirt and free entrance on the day that you work. 3 RECRUITING NEW PINOCHLE PLAYERS It’s going to be over ninety degrees later this week. But in a couple of months, after the holidays, in the dead of winter, when cabin fever has set in as it always does, you may be looking for something to do. One thing you could do if you were a player in the Pinochle League, would be to call and schedule a pinochle match with a rival team. To schedule said match, you would need to have joined the Pinochle League before the end of August. The Pinochle League membership has voted to not increase dues for the 2016-2017 championship season; dues will remain $36 per individual. Registered teams play seven monthly matches between September and March culminating in a Gala Championship Banquet in May. The league is in need of single players and teams of two players to join. Those who join will enjoy the camaraderie of inclusion in the league and have at least seven occurrences to avoid episodes of cabin fever when the weather has deteriorated. Contact Tom McNeill at 440 473-6860 or via email at iacespinochle@gmail.com for more information. 4 SCHANACHIE BOOKBUZZ Bonnie Easton COME JOIN THE FUN! Pat Dowd With some new faces and many old friends, the June “Steak Shoot” night was filled with much laughter and good fun. To get the evening off to a fine start, Bud Eppich won his first steaks and was no longer a “virgin” – player, that is. He was soon followed by Merrie Pyle, Susie Cooper, Bonnie Ayres, and Mae Keenan. Set 2 gave steaks to Mary McCluskey, Betsy Grinches, “Jen Jen”, and Steve Pyle. Then it was Jeff Wade winning for his wife, Judy, Tom Boyle, Jeff Wade again, and Sue Obojski. Tom Boyle and Bud Eppich wanted to keep up with Jeff, so they both won two more steaks, as did Ed Bopp and Kathy Dowd. Intermission gave everyone a chance to enjoy some dessert and buy raffle tickets. Then it was on to Set 5. The first winner was one of my former students from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Martha McCurdy. She led the way for Sue Obojski, Helene Kane and Alana Gurry. The final set of the regular games was won by our “regulars” – Rita McNeely, Bonnie Ayres, Barb Bopp, Therese Male, and Marilyn Paulin. The first two Bonus rounds were won by Rita McNeely and Steve Pyle. They took home four more steaks each. Our Grand Bonus for the evening was two beautiful London Broils which were happily claimed by Pat Pease! Jackie Duricky was glad she came for the first time, for she and her friends won the night’s cash prize of $61. A good time was had by all, and our “Holiday Cash” jackpot is growing! Please join us Thursday August 18 at 7:30 p.m. for our next “Steak Shoot” sessions sponsored by the Padraic Pearse Center. PADRAIC PEARSE CENTER IS ON FACEBOOK Check out the new Padraic Pearse Center Facebook Page at http://facebook.com/padraicpearsecenter and click on LIKE to follow our 2016 upcoming events, photos and more fun stuff! Here is a mixed bag of choices for your reading pleasure this month: Spill Simmer Falter Wither is the first novel by Sara Baume. The story sounds like your typical lonely man adopts dog story, but the author has more to offer with her lyrical writing style. As the seasons change, the mangy, one-eyed dog provides his owner with a richer, more fulfilling life Tender: A Novel by Belinda McKeon tells the story of two college friends in Dublin in the late 1990s. Catherine is studying art and journalism while James’ goal is to become a first class photographer. They share everything. Catherine’s feelings turn romantic, but James cannot return the sentiments. Enter heartbreak. Cathy Kelly writes women’s fiction. Her latest is It Started with Paris about a young Irish woman who accepts a marriage proposal from her boyfriend at the top of the Eifel Tower. Three different women participating in the wedding each have to confront their own demons and put on a brave face for the bride. For more suggestions, check out our website at www.padraicpearsecenter.weebly.com. Happy reading! PADRAIC PEARSE BOOK DISCUSSION Join the Padraic Pearse Book Discussion group on Friday, August 26 at 7:15 in the Board Room to discuss The Immortal Irishman: The Irish Revolutionary Who Became an American Hero by National Book Award winner Timothy Egan. Thomas Francis Meagher led a failed revolt in Ireland during the Great Famine and was banished to a penal colony in Australia. He escaped and appeared six months later in New York City. There, he formed the Irish Brigade during the Civil War where he and his men distinguished themselves at several of the fiercest battles. After the war, Meagher traveled to Montana where he became the territorial governor. What a fascinating life! On September 23, we will discuss The Last Days of Magic: A Novel by Mark Tompkins.
