Junior High Katy Summer Academic Term is for those students who fail two or more courses
during the regular school year and need to restore credit.
Summer Campus: Junior High
The 2016 summer term for Junior High Academic Credit Restoration will take place at the below
campus. Students from all Katy ISD junior high schools will attend this campus.

The Junior High Academic courses are designed to provide students with an opportunity to restore
credits that were lost during the regular school year. Students will attend two class periods each
day. For the academic courses, students are required to take two different courses.

The ESL Program will consist of five major components: reading, writing, listening, speaking and
mathematics. English Language Acquisition will be accelerated for students through reading and
responding to grade appropriate high interest material. Through exposure to and practice with
various types of writing, students will develop writing skills in English. Students will participate
orally in plays, chants and songs. Math instruction will focus on STAAR objectives and problem
solving skills utilizing math manipulatives. ESL will cover both summer school periods each day.

Online credit card payment during Campus Registration (April 11th - May 9th) will be available
through My Payments Plus. Students that do not have the ability to pay by credit card during
campus registration can pay at their home campus using cash, cashier’s check, or money order.
Credit Card Payment: My Payments Plus (Online)
Online payment through My Payments Plus will be available for summer school courses during
Campus Registration. Payment cannot be made online until the fee is posted in the “Other Fees”
section of the student’s account. Once a student has been registered in the course, the system will
take 24 hours to display the course fee in the “Other Fees” section. The payment timeline listed
below can be followed when paying online through My Payments Plus.
DO NOT PUT MONEY IN THE STUDENT’S MEAL ACCOUNT TO PAY FOR SUMMER SCHOOL.
MONEY CANNOT BE TRANSFERRED TO THE “OTHER FEES” SECTION OF A STUDENT’S ACCOUNT.

Refund Policy: Junior High
Students may request course cancellation for a full refund until Tuesday, June 7th. All class
cancellations must be requested in writing by using the Refund Request Form found on the Katy
Summer Academic Term Website. The Refund Request Form must be completed in full, signed,
and emailed to KristiLArcher@katyisd.org by 4:00 PM on June 7th.
After June 7th, a refund review may take place ONLY for the two reasons listed below. These
reasons will not automatically qualify a student to receive a full or even partial refund. Each
situation will be carefully reviewed by the Summer School Coordinator.
 a long-term illness or injury causing withdrawal from summer school. The refund request
must be accompanied by a doctor’s verification of the medical condition causing withdrawal.
 a death in the immediate family (documentation required).
No refunds will be processed until the week of June 6th - June 10th regardless of when the
request was made. All refunds that are approved will be generated in the form of a check.
Discipline: Junior High
Students must adhere to the school dress code and behavior standards of Katy ISD as outlined in
the Katy ISD Discipline Management Plan and Student Code of Conduct Handbook. Students
may be dismissed for unacceptable behavior.
***No refunds will be approved for students dismissed for attendance or discipline reasons***

Attendance & Tardies: Junior High
Daily attendance is required to receive credit. Students that are absent for more than one (1) day,
for any reason, will be potentially withdrawn and no credit or refund will be given. Students that
are tardy more than 15 minutes of a class will be counted absent for one-third of a day. Three
such tardies will count as a full day’s absence.
Grading: Junior High
Parents/guardians of students enrolled in academic courses will receive a progress report at the
mid-point of the summer class and will be mailed a report card when the course has been
completed.
Textbooks: Junior High
 Students who are issued a textbook during summer term are responsible for that book.
 Lost and/or damaged textbooks must be paid for following the regular school year regulations.
 Failure to return or pay for an issued textbook will result in loss of the course/class credit.
Food Service: Junior High
Morton Ranch Junior High has been designated as a “Summer Feeding Program” campus.
Therefore, free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students that attend the KSAT programs
on this campus.
Transportation: Junior High
Round trip bus transportation is provided on designated Katy ISD routes (see page 12).
Students will be picked up and returned to the same bus stop. The routes are subject to change
based on student participation.
Parents/guardians are responsible for the supervision of their student at the bus stop.

Program Description: 8th Grade SSI
Students who have not met the passing standard on either the Grade 8 Mathematics or Reading STAAR will
be provided engaging accelerated instruction. The goal of this summer program is to develop a growth
mindset and increase students’ confidence in their mathematical and reading abilities. During this program,
students will have a third opportunity to take the STAAR test in the subject area they still have yet to
master.
For MATH: Students will participate in numeracy activities that will encourage varied strategies and flexible
thinking. They will also engage in cooperative problem solving and math stations geared towards bridging
student learning gaps. Students will be led to think and communicate about mathematics.
For READING: Students will participate in team-building activities as well as reading rotations including a
computer based reading program which places each student on a personalized learning path. Students will
be involved in an integration of multimedia to help engage and motivate students, while exploring story
elements and support background knowledge.

General Information: 8th Grade SSI
Registration: 8th Grade SSI
8th Grade students who have not met the passing standard on the STAAR Grade 8 Math and /or
Reading assessment are required to receive accelerated instruction in the content that they failed
that will be provided during KSAT 8th Grade SSI.
If your child is required to attend KSAT 8th Grade SSI, a Grade Placement Committee (GPC)
meeting will be held on your child’s home campus. A KSAT 8th Grade SSI Registration form must
be completed and signed by the parent/guardian for your child to be registered to attend.
There is no cost to attend KSAT 8th Grade SSI.
Attendance, Discipline & Dress Code: 8th Grade SSI
Daily attendance is critical to maximize the benefit for each student. Students must adhere to the
behavior standards of Katy ISD as outlined in the Katy ISD Discipline Management Plan and
Student Code of Conduct. Students must also adhere to the Katy ISD dress code.

There will be several elective course choices for students this summer. Students will be enrolled in
an elective based on their top two choices and available classroom space. Descriptions of the

Graphic Design: Delve into the creative world of computer graphics and coding
Summer Olympic Games: Develop physical prowess with exciting physical competition
(NOTE: Students enrolled in Summer Olympic Games will participate in physical activity.
Appropriate clothing and shoes must be worn each day to be able to participate.)
Visual Art & Design: Tap into curiosity and imagination to create works of art
Students will make their selections during the parent meeting at the home campus.
Transportation: 8th Grade SSI

Lunch
Taylor High School:
Lunch items and snacks will be available for cash purchase only through the Taylor High School
Booster Clubs. Students may also bring a lunch from home.
Morton Ranch High School:
Morton Ranch High School has been designated as a “Summer Feeding Program” campus.
Therefore, free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students that attend the KSAT program
on this campus.
Transportation
Round trip bus transportation is provided on designated Katy ISD routes (see page 25). Students
will be picked up and returned to the same bus stop. The routes are subject to change based on
student participation.
Parents/guardians are responsible for the supervision of their student at the bus stop.

Summer Testing
STAAR/EOC and Exit TAKS Remediation Opportunities

Remediation classes will be offered for those students who need to retake any STAAR/EOC or
Exit TAKS test in July.

STAAR and TAKS remediation classes are intended to assist students in mastering STAAR and
TAKS objectives. The STAAR and TAKS acceleration classes are only for those students who are
eligible to retake the exit-level STAAR and TAKS test in July.

Students receive no course credit for attending any of the remediation sessions and there is no
cost to take these classes.

All STAAR and TAKS testing will take place at Morton Ranch High School.
Important Summer Testing Locations
Students enrolled in 2nd semester KSAT

Students who are enrolled in 2nd semester KSAT and who need to retake an EOC assessment
will be offered that opportunity the week of July 11.

On Monday, July 11 through Wednesday, July 13, 2016, testing will take place at Taylor High
School in the AM and student classroom hours will be from 11:30 - 2:30 PM.

Students will be required to go to class after testing is complete.

Thursday, July 14, test times will be posted on the Katy Summer Academic Term website.
Students NOT enrolled in 2nd semester KSAT

Any students not attending Semester 2 of KSAT will take their EOC or TAKS test at Morton
Ranch High School.
Raines High School (RHS) & Opportunity Awareness Center (OAC)

RHS and OAC students will take STAAR and TAKS tests at MRHS.

Please check with the campus in regards to remediation opportunities.

Additional High School Summer Programs
KOLA
Katy Online Learning Academy (KOLA) offers credit recovery through a web-based learning
platform in a blended learning environment. KOLA allows students to complete a course at their
own pace within a specified timeframe supported by teachers certified in their core area.
To be successful in KOLA a students’ grade should be 60 to 69, attend class (KOLA is not virtual),
take notes, and have a 9th grade reading level. Upon completion and passing all assignments
students receive a 70 which replaces the failing grade on their transcript.
KOLA registration for Summer Term is during the General Registration June 10th and 11th, 2016.
HCC Dual Credit





Katy ISD will award credit for approved Dual Credit courses taken during the summer.
Availability and course schedule is determined by Houston Community College (HCC).
The HCC summer course schedule is posted at www.hccs.edu (click on the Northwest tab).
Students who attend class on a Houston Community College campus must have a current
meningitis immunization on file with the college prior to enrolling in any courses. Contact HCC
for more information.
Students must request summer school dual credit transcript and document eligibility by March
21.

KVS courses are $200 per semester.
Course Load
During the summer, students can take one AP level course per session or two academic level courses per
session. Year-long courses are two sessions.
*PreAP Geometry is available only to students entering 10th grade or above who did not take Algebra I in 8th
grade. This online course allows students the opportunity to advance one year and be eligible to take AP Calculus during the senior year.
Creative Writing can be taken as either a one semester course or a year-long course.
Registration Process
To register, visit www.katyvirtualschool.org and click on the Registration and Courses tab. Complete the
online application powered by InfoSnap. Applications must be approved by the student's counselor, as well
as the Katy Virtual School and may take several weeks to process. Course requests will be processed in the
order they are received. Completion of application does not guarantee enrollment. Students will be notified of
enrollment status through their Katy ISD email. Parents will be notified through their submitted parent
email.
Who Can Register? Courses in the Katy ISD Virtual School are only available to students currently enrolled
in Katy ISD. Once a student withdraws from the District, the student is also withdrawn from their virtual
course. Transfer grades will be sent to the receiving district following the normal campus process.
