Dear Parents and Guardians:
The Middletown Township Public School District is excited to offer our students a Summer Program with an
extensive selection of enrichment courses in Grades Kindergarten through Twelfth and YMCA Wrap-Around
options in Grades Kindergarten through Fifth.
Enrichment courses are available for students in every grade level and range from language arts, mathematics
and technology for students in grades K-8, to SAT prep, college application essay writing, and A.P. Prep for our
high school students.
All programs will be taught by certified teachers and held at Middletown Village Elementary School, Bayview
Elementary School, Bayshore Middle School and Middletown High School South.
The K - 8 Summer Enrichment Program will run Tuesday and Thursday each week, 8:30am – 11:30am, for five
weeks at a cost of $50 per student for all ten classes. The YMCA will offer Wrap-Around opportunities to
students in the Kindergarten through Fifth Grade Enrichment Program with the following time options: Before
Care: 7:00am – 8:30am, After Care: 11:30am – 4:00pm and All Day Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 7:00am –
4:00pm. If you are interested in the YMCA program, please contact the following: Sharon Szaro at 732-5669266.
Students in Grades 9 – 12 will be offered enrichment and A.P. Prep opportunities at a cost of $10 per course.
Each course will be held two days per week from 8:00am – 11:00am.
Programs are available based on enrollment and budgetary constraints. Therefore, we ask if you are interested
in attending, please register online from Monday, April 18, 2016 through Friday, May 13, 2016. May 13th is a
strict deadline so that we can fully prepare for the summer program. Late registration will not be accepted.

Grades K - 2
Summer Enrichment Programs

Kindergarten
Animal Stories
Students will create a group story with the genre, Realistic Fiction. The story will focus on animal facts. Students
will build concept vocabulary and develop listening comprehension.

Learning through Mathematical Games
Students will review and practice basic skills through mathematical games. Activities will explore a variety of
mathematical content and offer opportunities for children to apply their skills and understanding of number
concepts, geometry, and measurement.

Hands-On Science
Students will be able to explore and discover the wonders of science. Through inquiry-based and hands-on
experimentation children will predict and gain an understanding of the world around them.

Grade 1
Writing Through Picture Books
In this course, picture books will be used as an inspiration for writing. Students will improve writing skills while
exploring literature from some of their favorite authors and illustrators. These delightful discoveries will help spark
their creativity and generate an excitement to express themselves!

Mathematics through Games
Students will review and practice basic skills through mathematical games. Activities will explore a variety of
mathematical content and offer opportunities for children to apply skills and understanding of arithmetic
operations, geometry, and measurement.

Read What You Love, Love What You Read
Reading can be fun when fabulous stories are paired with exciting activities, such as utilizing reading
comprehension strategies (making connections, visualizing, inferring, asking questions, synthesizing, summarizing,
predictions/other ideas, story vocabulary, thoughts about characters, and determining importance) to build better
comprehension skills while fostering children’s love for reading.

Grade 2
Countertop Chemistry
Calling all scientists! Did you ever want to mix some of this to some of that and see what happens? Well, grab your
goggles and lab coat and enter the laboratory! All participants will use the magic of chemistry to transform the
contents of your kitchen into experiments that are fun and engaging while learning the nature of science! They will
investigate the properties of matter, explore chemical and physical changes and other concepts in chemistry!

Become a Google Ninja
Students will be engaged (and better prepared for 3rd grade) as they explore Google Drive to create a document,
presentation and drawing based on an animal of their choice. They will also learn to navigate Google Chrome and
use basic apps such as PicMonkey to create a final project collage! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bringing Books to Life
Read some of your favorite stories and then roll up your sleeves and get ready to express your creativity through
cross-curricular project based learning.

Tell Me a Story….
In this course students will learn the art of storytelling and different forms of storytelling. They will explore folk
tales, fables, myths, poetry, readers’ theatre, puppetry, improvisation, and visual media. Students will have hands
on experience telling stories using these various genres. As a final project, students will engage in storytelling, using
a genre, for an audience.

Kids Can Code!
Using iPads and/or Chromebooks, students will learn the foundation skills of coding (programming) and be on their
way to creating games!

mathematical content and offer opportunities for children to apply their skills and understanding of geometry,

Mysterious Math
Do you like to solve mysteries? Puzzles? Riddles? Come learn a fun way to use higher level thinking skills to solve all
kinds of math problems. Discover new strategies using logical reasoning, puzzles, brain teasers and more!

Technology Presentation Tools
Do you want to learn how to “hammer out” a top notch presentation? Students will use the Internet to create
visually appealing presentations using online tools such as Prezi, Glogster, Wordle, Google Docs, Animoto,
Slideshare, Popplet and more!

First Class Writers
Pack your bags and bring your passports as you travel through the different writing genres, which will encourage
your creativity and enhance your writing development. You will explore the mysteries of poetry, short story/fiction,
cartooning/graphic novel and memoirs.

Grade 5
Readers’ Theater – Lights, Camera, Action!
Like storytelling, Readers’ Theater can create images by suggestion that could never be portrayed realistically on
stage. Space and time can be shrunk or stretched, fantastic worlds can be created, and marvelous journeys can be
enacted. Readers’ Theater frees the performers and the audience from the physical limitations of conventional
theater, letting the imagination soar.

Become a Website Developer
Calling all webmasters!!! How would you like to create, design and publish your own website? Students will
research and decide on a topic of their choice to construct a website using Google Sites.

Readers Workshop: 6 Signposts for Fiction Texts
In this workshop, students will be taught the six different signposts that can be used as they analyze fictional texts.
Each signpost will be paired with a specific text, and students will be required to identify substantial pieces of
textual evidence that show proof of the given signposts. Students will complete a project including the use of
technology and will create a presentation showing their mastery in this specific field.

Science for the Consumer: Differentiating Between Science & Pseudoscience
Students will learn how to question and evaluate extraordinary claims mistakenly regarded as being based in
science.

Introduction to Other Areas of Scientific Study:
Environmental Science, Forensic Science, & Nutritional Science
In addition, this course will help students to gain the communication skills required in the Next Generation Science
Standards (NGSS) including CER (Claims, Evidence, & Reasoning), and to incorporate the engineering component
that is part of NGSS—in particular, problem solving through design.

Grades 7 & 8
Writers Workshop: Evaluating the Argument
In this workshop, students will weigh two separate arguments by different authors revolving around a given
issue. Using the workshop model, students will complete an argument evaluation essay. Students will focus on the
types of evidence included in each argument to determine which is stronger regardless of personal opinion.

College Application Essay Writing Grade 11
The objective of this course is to prepare the prospective college student for application essay writing. Students will
attempt various writing prompts to make their proposal as straight forward and detailed as possible. They will
learn what schools are looking for in their prospective students and the best way to bring their objectives forward.
They will leave this course with several solid essay drafts that can be adapted for all of their college applications.

Getting Ready for Algebra in Grade 9 – (Current Grade 8 Students)
This course will review key Pre-Algebra topics that are critical for success in Algebra I in high school. Topics would
include: fraction operations, evaluating variable expressions, order of operations, properties of real numbers, real
number operations, solving simple linear equations, and plotting points on the coordinate plane. Note: This course
will utilize the iPad Fuse Algebra program.

Algebra II Headstart: Get AlgebraFit with a Summer iPad Workout
For students entering Algebra II
This course is designed for students who have completed Algebra I and are entering Algebra II in September and
would like to review and strengthen their Algebra skills. It will provide students the opportunity to explore and
investigate essential algebraic concepts, necessary for success in Algebra II, using various applications for the
iPad. Throughout the course, students will also have the opportunity to work together to strategize on various
problem solving techniques. The focus of this interactive course is Linear and Quadratic Functions. This course
will also assist students in completing their required summer packet for entering Algebra II.

Summer of Make Grades 9-12
In this hands-on program, students will explore a new maker tool each week. Tools and technology include 3D
printing and design, electronics and circuitry, robotics and coding, and wearable technology. Students will be
introduced to the basics of each tool and will have options for creating different projects based on their interests
each week. This program is perfect for any student who wants to make, create, craft, hack, tinker and learn. No
prior experience necessary!
