Applications of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology the National Seminar
Patna Women's College, Patna University, Bailey Road, Patna – 800 001
To inculcate the tradition of research in the field of Nanoscience, Department of
Physics, Patna Women's College organised UGC sponsored National Seminar on
'Applications of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology' which was held on 12 th
September, 2008 .
•
•
Objectives of the National Seminar
• To provide a much needed platform for undergraduate, postgraduate students, researchers and academicians.
• To give the participants an exposure to the new and emerging technological advancements.
To initiate research in this important field.
To put northern region on the global map.
Theme of the Seminar
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are among the fastest emerging areas of research.
The technology can be best described as one which includes all activities related to minute particles of atomic and molecular dimension. The emerging trends in
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology will change the nature of almost every man-made object in the next century. It is expected to revolutionize areas like semi conductors, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, specialized fabric manufacturing, waste treatment, high density data storage device, super computers etc. The 21 st
century would be the
Nanotechnology Century. Nanosized inorganics have various promising applications in areas like the ceramic industry, paint industry, catalyst industry, drug industry etc.
Almost all the countries have accorded top research priority to it. This sector is also expected to create 12 million jobs by 2015. The field of nanostructured materials is widening. This seminar will provide a forum for discussion on all aspects of nanoscienc e and will foster the exchange of ideas on techniques, experiments and applic ations of nanoscience and nanotechnology. All original contributions will be arranged in the form of plenary, keynote, invited, oral and poster presentations.

Prof. V. A. Singh in his very informative keynote address quoted a Sanskrit 'shloka' to convey the idea of how minute a nanostructure is. He mentioned objects used since ancient times that were examples of nanotechnology.
He stated that this is an age of silicon, and India has taken initiative in the field of nanotechnology through Nano Science and
Technology Mission which works on four thrust areas – Nano Electronics, Drug Delivery
Systems, Phosphors for Lighting and Display, and Nano Scale Surface. He stressed the need
Prof. V. A. Singh presenting the
Keynote Address to strengthen scientific research, and develop a nanocourse for undergraduate students in Bihar. He also gave information about the National Initiative on Undergraduate
Science with stress on Teacher Curriculum development. Professor Singh suggested that the elementary education of Nanotechnology and Nanoscience should start at the
Undergraduate or even at the 12 th
grade level. He also talked about Nano Technology in Electronic Devices. Physicists have been able t o fabricate one electron to transistor.
The more and more transistors you put on a chip, the smaller and faster the device becomes. Today, it is possible to include a camera, an internet, an e-mail service and a
GPS device in a mobile cell phone.

Biological systems such as DNA molecules are Nano materials. Quantum wells are 2D systems, whereas Quantum wires and
Prof. G. S. Singh presenting his PowerPoint
Presentation
Nanorings are 1D system. Quantum Dots and OD system (Artificial Atoms) as mentioned earlier. Diamond is a 3D material where as Graphite and Graphere are 2D materials.
Professor Singh also mentioned possible use of Nanorobots for medical applications, such as artery clearing, gene repair, dental care, neurological damage repair, etc.
Nanoparticles can be used to kill virus and bacteria also, in addition to several other medical applications.
Dr. Avinash C. Pandey gave a talk based on Quantum confined Atom based
Nanomaterials for their Application in
Electronics, Optoelectronic Devices and
Biology. In the nano-limit, materials behave non-linearly. This property makes nanoparticles more interesting and more useful. He compared
Quantum Dots versus Quantum Confined
Atoms (QCA). Quantum confinement of an atom in a nanocage produces polarized atom.
He also talked about Magnetic Quantum Dot
Dr. Avinash C. Pandey, presenting his
PowerPoint Presentation and Nanomagnets and their applications in biology and medicine. He talked about
Targeted Drug Delivery using Magnetic Nanoparticles. He mentioned the challenges for
Physicists, Chemists and Biologists to develop nanomaterials for the third world.
