The purpose of this event is to encourage the younger generation of engineers in developing alternative energy technologies and at the same time have the chance to apply fundamental engineering knowledge through hands on experience in preparing the vehicle for the competition. Unlike other conventional vehicle racing, this challenge is focused on vehicles achieving the highest levels of efficiency and energy management. The cars have battery packs with capacity of 1.5 kW-hr of energy. On the first day of the race, cars will be fully charged and have to compete by only using the battery as the source of energy. The duration of the challenge was set for 1 hour. On the second day of the race, teams are given approximately 4 liters of petrol for a gasoline engine that will work with the battery. The objective is energy management to see which car can achieve the longest distance in a fix period of time. The duration for this challenge was set at 3 hours. A total of 11 teams took part in this competition. The details of these teams are presented in the table below: Institution Name Country Petroleum Institute Petroleum Institute Petroleum Institute United Arab Emirates University Khalifa University Abu Dhabi University Masdar Institute of Science and Technology Abu Dhabi, UAE Abu Dhabi, UAE Abu Dhabi, UAE Al – Ain, UAE Abu Dhabi, UAE Abu Dhabi, UAE Abu Dhabi, UAE Car Number and Name 001 – Falcons 016 – ACEOME 007 – Mechanical Maestros 444 – Cheetah 099 – KU Stream 010 – ADU Green Gears 003 – YELA! Two teams from CENG supervised by Dr John-John Cabibihan (MIE Dept.) and by Dr. Uvais Qidwai (CSE Dept.) won the two categories of Microsoft Imagine Cup last night. Many thanks to our students and supervisors who made us proud in this nationwide competition. We wish them all the best in the next level, the Pan Arab then the World! Name of Event/Activity: Seminar on Interactive Pet Companion with Emotion Recognition for Elderly Faculty/Staff involved: John-John Cabibihan Students involved: None Date and duration: 24th October 2014 Venue and organizer: Qatar University, MIE Dept. Speaker: Dr Yeow Kee Tan, Senior Research Fellow, Institute for Infocomm Research, Agency for Science, Technology and Research A*STAR Brief write up about event/activity: In this presentation, two work will be presented: HuGGler Pet Robot and SoundEye Emergency Monitoring System. HuGGler, an interactive pet companion with the unique patent pending technology to recognize verbal (e.g. laughing, crying, shouting and talking) and non-verbal (e.g. squeezing, hitting, patting and stroking) acts that are tied to the emotional state of a person. HuGGler, a cuddly and affectionate interactive robotic pet companion, can provide un-conditional companionship to the elderly. This will positively impact their emotional wellbeing and their qualityof-life, ultimately leading to improved overall health and reduced health care cost. HuGGler will also provide geriatricians with reports related to the interaction behavior of the elderly performed towards the robotic platform. Sound-Eye is a revolutionary emergency monitoring system that employs sound event classification technology to detect abnormal sound events. Sound-Eye is carefully designed to address the need of stakeholders in terms of affordability, ease-of-installation and privacy protection. Should an emergency occur, Sound-Eye can detect the natural reaction of elderly verbally screaming for assistance instantly, thereby mediating the severity of the condition. Two types of sensors were presented. One type of sensor utilizes emerging nanomaterials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes for vapor (and gas) sensing. These sensors are integrated directly on silicon integrated circuits to realize a single chip electronic nose. The second type of sensor utilizes optically fluorescent and colorimetric dyes encapsulated within silica beads. A miniaturized optical platform was presented for sensing of both vapor (gas) and liquid chemical targets. The talk also showcased some other research activities at NanoLab and at Tufts University.
