Customer-specific membrane keypads We design and manufacture membrane keypads and front membranes to meet your individual requirements – if necessary, integrated in supporting plates or pre-fitted on our enclosures. Optimal quality can be achieved for every use on the basis of copperlaminated supporting membranes or strip conductors applied using the silkscreen process. Depending on your needs we can supply you with your own individual membrane keypad with fitted touch screens, displays and other electromechanical components. Printing is by means of silk-screen or 564 digital methods, according to the number of colours and the requirements in respect of visual design. Our membership of the specialist keypad association ensures that we are always up-to-date with the latest technology, so we can always meet our customers’ needs in the best possible way. The membrane keypad products which we market are components and are not subject to the ElektroG (the law relating to electrical and electronic equipment and appliances) or to the national laws of the WEEE/RoHS. Consequently we are under no obligation to register. Technical characteristics: Exactly to customers’ needs: Special characteristics: The contact elements of our keypads are embedded between high-quality polyester membranes. The contact is made by pressing on the front membrane in the area of the key element. On request, transparent screens (or also coloured) can be provided in the keypad to make visible optical displays such as LEDs or 7-segment displays. Of course, various glasses can also be built in, or the front membranes can be left clear in the screen area. If necessary, we can fit the membrane keypads on supporting plates or on enclosures. Size, design, colour, front membrane matt, silk matt or gloss, with or without clear screen, with or without tactile action point – our membrane keypads are manufactured to satisfy your exact requirements. Depending on the type, the keypads are equipped with a safety chamber for each individual snap disc. This prevents the slipping of the metal domes, so increasing the quality considerably. • Stainless steel snap disc, gold-plated contact side • Safety chamber for each individual snap disc, depending on type • Elegant matt front membrane • Dirt- and splash-proof according to DIN EN 60529 Base membrane using conductive silver technology • Graphite printing protects the conductive silver strips against oxidation and mechanical abrasion • Green insulation printing prevents silver migration Base membrane copper-laminated The construction of our keypads ensures that they function very securely, and, thanks to their good chemical resistance properties, they are ideal for use in harsh industrial environments. • The conductor strips are laminated with copper and galvanically silverplated (gold-plated on request) - This prevents silver migration and abrasion - The material is extremely flexible and so resistant to breaking Key embossing (option) Front membrane Screening membrane (option) Switch membrane Bonding sheet Base membrane Distance membrane Note Membrane cable We supply all standard keypads in modified designs on request – fast, and at low cost! Mitglied in der Fachgemeinschaft Tastaturen 565 ProfiLine technology membrane keypads ProfiLine technology optimises the interface between man and machine by means of the so-called “short-stroke” feeling. A raised key element fitted between the snap disc and the front membrane ensures improved tactile feeling. This means that designers and design engineers can give free rein to their creative ideas when designing individual shapes and dimensions, because ProfiLine key surfaces can be produced in almost any required or necessary sizes (ø 7 mm and over). ProfiLine, the new membrane keypad, gives the user much more than just an input element. The sturdy, raised keys guarantee safe operation and provide opportunities for personal and individual designs. Whether round, square, triangular or hexagonal – the laser-cut acrylic glass keys (recessed with front membranes) not only give the user optimal tactile feedback, but they are also extremely sturdy. Thanks to the tough design, neither excessive pressures nor chemicals have any effect on the ProfiLine keypad. If additional safety precautions are required, metal surfaces take care of extensive protection. THE MAIN ADVANTAGES: • very good tactile feedback • raised key element / optimal fingering • even pressure distribution ensures less wear and tear on snap discs • large-area keypad and contact elements can be produced • the shape of the keys can be designed as required • excellent value for money ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Voltage Current Insulation resistance Bouncing time Contact elements Design of a standard membrane keypad 566 1-42 V max. 100 mA > 100 MΩ < 10 ms snap disc, gold-plated ProfiLine´s “short-stroke” feeling The raised key element made of recessed acrylic glass provides improved tactile feeling. The electro-luminescent phosphor particles are distributed evenly on the surfaces of the membranes. By contrast, light sources such as LEDs or bulbs are points of light. The use of EL membranes in the field of membrane keypads offers designers many advantages. The benefits include low power consumption, low mechanical fitting height, and mechanical flexibility. EL membranes emit homogeneous light over the entire surface. Thanks to their high degree of efficiency, EL membranes are characterized by very low power consumption. Replacing bulbs or LEDs with EL membranes reduces power consumption by more than 50%. The operating life of the EL membranes is extremely dependent on the level of brightness. As the EL membrane is normally manufactured using the silk screen printing process, it is possible to produce almost any drawing or graphic as an EL membrane. The only restriction in terms of design is the flat shape of the membrane. Increasing the voltage increases the brightness. The best method of increasing the brightness of the EL membrane is to increase the voltage instead of the frequency. The choice of colours used for the membrane is also important. The most common colours are green, blue-green and white. Green and blue-green are the natural colours emitted by phosphorus, which means that they are the most effective. White is not a broadband colour, and is approximately 20% darker than a comparable green membrane. Changing the frequency can change the colour: a higher frequency moves the colour towards blue, and a low frequency moves it towards green. 100 250 80 200 Brightness (cd/m2) Brightness (cd/m2) In use, the membranes gradually lose brightness. The industrial standard for the operating life of EL membranes is defined as the amount of time which expires before half of the initial brightness is lost. Membranes with a high initial level of brightness can reach the 50% level after only 500 hours. Membranes which have a low initial level of brightness can achieve an operating life of over 5000 hours. The type of AC signal used can also affect the operating life. Little energy is lost in the form of heat. Normally, EL membranes are less than 0.3 mm thick. This offers an advantage in comparison with sources of points of light, which require a 2 to 3 mm thick light guide in order to achieve a similarly homogeneous level of light distribution. 60 40 20 150 100 50 115 V 0 0,1 0,75 150 V 0 2 5 10 15 20 25 Operating life (Kh) 300 V 568 30 200 400 800 Frequency 1200 1800 The surface can also be illuminated selectively. If required, any section of the membrane can be lit separately. The brightness or level of illumination of a membrane is the main factor which determines the operating conditions. EL membranes require an AC signal for operation. Increased membrane brightness is achieved by means of higher voltages or frequencies respectively. In order to determine the initial brightness, it is first necessary to establish the required lower level of both the brightness and the operating life. 569 Cu-laminated base membranes / PCBs We offer you individual processing of your membrane keypads and PCBs. Cu-laminated base membranes The base membrane of a keypad is the lowest layer (polyester) with conductor strips on which the snap discs for contacting are placed. BOPLA offers the base membrane Cu-laminated and galvanically silver-plated, and also gold-plated if required. The design and manufacture of the membrane keypads takes place on networked CAD systems, which guarantees speed and accuracy. The Cu-laminated material is highly flexible, which ensures that there is no possibility of breakage to the membrane cable or of silver migration or abrasion. 570 A further advantage of the Cu-laminated membrane is that electronic components can be safely fitted with SMDs and soldered. The logical result of this is FT-E technology. Its simplicity is amazing – the input unit (FT) and the appropriate electronics (E) are on the same carrier material, so there are no interferenceprone and expensive connections. PCBs with fitting e.g. connectors, LEDs, resistances BOPLA offers low-cost manufacture of the complete membrane keypad, including PCB and fitting with simple components (e.g. connectors, LEDs, resistances, etc.). Normally, the first stage is to fit the various membrane layers and switch elements onto the PCBs. Then the external edges (outer profile) are milled, and if necessary, components are soldered onto the other side. Pins of different lengths can be screwed into threaded inserts which have been pressed into the PCBs. This makes it possible to fit additional PCBs or to fasten the complete input unit. This construction makes it possible to dispense with one supporting plate. 571 Autotex AM / PC keyboards Anti-microbial decor material for membrane keypads and decor foils. Autotex AM protects against numerous strains of bacteria, e.g. MRSA, salmonella spp, etc. The hard-coated polyester foil incorporates "Microban” for built-in anti-microbial protection. If bacteria come into contact with Microban, its anti-microbial function splits the cell walls of the bacteria, so preventing their growth and reproduction. Anti-microbial membrane keypads and decor foils are primarily used in areas where there is a danger of infection, such as hospitals, doctors’ practices, supermarkets, canteens, buildings which are open to the public, and public transport. The manufacturer of the foil guarantees correct function during the entire lifetime of the product. Autotex AM is available in thicknesses 150µ and 200µ. Autotex AM does not lead to any restrictions in design – the foils can be designed to meet customers’ individual wishes. 572 Membrane keypads/PC keyboards, IBM compatible PC membrane keypads are available on request with 2, 30, 48, 56, 61, 90, 102 or 107 keys and also with a pressure point and embossing. The membrane is printed on the back, so the printing is protected against environmental influences such as dirt, moisture and scratches. The front membrane, switch membrane, spacers and the basic layer are glued together using high-quality bonding sheets and can subsquently be pressed if required. Pressing of the membrane keypad is not a standard process! It is only carried out for special applications, e.g.: – increased impermeability – impermeability against alcohol Version 5 Keypad with pressure point with embossing (Mylardom direct) Front membrane (contact membrane) Spacer (adhesive on both sides) Switch membrane Adhesive basic layer Copper laminated Screening membrane (option) Version 1 (Standard) Keypad with pressure point Front membrane Conductive silver Safety chamber (adhesive on top) Version 1 (Standard) Keypad with pressure point Spacer (adhesive on both sides) Switch membrane Adhesive basic layer Front membrane Safety chamber (adhesive on top) Spacer (adhesive on both sides) Switch membrane Adhesive basic layer Version 2 Keypad with pressure point, 2-layer Front membrane Version 2 Keypad with pressure point and embossing If LEDs also need to be integrated into the keypad, the front panel must be provided with a dimpled embossing in the area where the LEDs are to be fitted. If embossing is not wanted, the keypad can also be fitted using an additional LED layer and a pad. Note that this method increases the total thickness of the keypad. In order to carry off discharges of static electricity and to prevent the influence of spurious frequencies, screening can be built into the keypad. This screening membrane is fitted underneath the covering membrane; display screen with screening available on request. The contact side is gold-plated. The switch operation pressure of our standard snap discs is approx. 2.5 to 3 N. Depending on the size of the domes, the minimum distance from the centre of one key to the next is 16 (11) mm. Circuits a) Common conductor cable b) X-Y matrix Each key is connected to the common cable and a strip conductor output. No additional decoding is required. All conductors are led to a highly flexible membrane cable in order to connect the entire keypad area to the electronics. The horizontal X output conductors and the vertical Y output conductors are connected to the contact points of the keys. This reduces the number of connections to just a few conductors. Padding keypads Low-cost customer-specific membrane keypads can be manufactured on the basis of our standard keypad range. After selection of a basic keypad body, the rest of the surface is filled with a spacer. A front membrane, backprinted according to the customer’s instructions, is then fitted over the whole construction. Front membrane All dimensions in mm. Please refer to technical data. Body 575 Bonding sheet (pad) Information Membrane cable Slot-in pockets Embossings The position of the exit point and the related length of the connection membrane should be determined during the planning phase. The leading out of the contact connections is via the membrane cable. The ribbon is punched out of the keypad in the area of the exit so that the membrane cannot tear when it is bent. The standard grid dimension is 2.54 mm. Avoid excessive bending. The ideal bending radius for the cable is > 4 mm. Slot-in pockets can be incorporated in the keypad for the subsequent individual marking of keys or surfaces. Replaceable slot-in strips (e.g. for logos) can be inserted from the side, front or rear. The slot-in pocket is fitted directly behind the front membrane, so the slot-in strip is visible in the unprinted area. Dome embossing On the dome embossing the embossed area is about 0.3 mm higher than the front membrane. Possible embossing forms: Mounting holes Plugs If components are fitted in the supporting plate and centered in the front membrane, take the amount of play into consideration. The punchedout hole in the front membrane must be larger. The membrane cable can be led either into one membrane direct plug soldered to the PCB, or a plug is crimped at the end of the cable. If plugs have been crimped in position, a single-row post plug must be fitted as a counter-piece on the PCB. If the mounting drill-holes are very close to the corner of a keyboard, the result is thin, unequal intermediate sections. In such cases, the corner should be completely cut out. Protection types When laminating the keypad onto a support, we recommend sealing the cable exit with a suitable adhesive. If the keypad is pressed onto the supports by means of a pressing device, the keypad is absolutely waterproof (also alcohol-proof, depending on the design). Edge embossing The edge embossing is used to guide the fingers. The niveau at front membrane and key area remains the same. Possible embossing forms: Bubble embossing If an enclosure used with a keypad is expected to achieve ingress protection category IP 65, note the following: The bubble embossing is in various diameters from 8 to 17 mm available. Supporting plates The supporting plates are manufactured according to customers’ specifications. They can be supplied with press-in bolts with the following standard dimensions: 1. The cable inlet in the enclosure must be sealed with a special adhesive. 2. It may be necessary to adapt the construction of the keypad. length (mm) min. distance from edge to middle at hole hole ø in tin thread Wart embossing for LEDs aluminium/steel 576 Our construction department reserves the right to carry out the technical realisation of individual types! Surfaces External contour Front membrane / membrane keypad The following roughness grades are available for the surface of the front membranes: 1. gloss 2. silk-matt 3. matt Matt surfaces are used in most cases. The amount of play must be taken into consideration when planning a membrane keypad / front membrane on a supporting plate or in an enclosure. The contour can be designed according to specific requirements. Protective membranes Colours Special silk screen paints for plastics – so-called key switch colours – are used for the printing of the front membranes. Printing is on the back, which protects the layers of paint against environmental influences. Standard paints are selected and used according to RAL. Shades of colours according to the HKS and Pantone scale can be printed. Additional costs for special colours will be charged for according to the work involved. Front membrane design A minimum line thickness of 0.3 mm must be kept to when the front panel is being designed. High-quality printing cannot be guaranteed if the line thickness is less than 0.3 mm. For the front membrane design, Corel DRAW can be provided as a *.cdr file and used if necessary, as can vectored Windows data. Display glass If required, a protective membrane can be drawn over the front membrane or only over the screen. This protective membrane can be removed without leaving any adhesive residues after the keypad has been fitted. Glass is frequently used for screens instead of closed, clear membranes (front membranes). The following materials can be offered: 1. acrylic glass (e.g. plexiglass) 2. polycarbonate (e.g. Macrolon) 3. crystal glass (e.g. window glass). Releases Before series manufacturing starts, a file will be emailed, or if preferred, a paper print-out will be sent by post for the purpose of release. On request, release samples will be silk-screen printed and charged for according to the work involved. Assembly BOPLA offers a complete range of processing and assembly services. The advantages for the customer are: faster delivery times, fewer order requirements, and a reduced risk of rejects. In this way, the customer can be certain that the keypad bonding sheet fits the various enclosure surfaces and that there is a high level of fitting accuracy. All dimensions in mm. Panel production Depending on the quality ordered and the size of keypad, we always try to make use of the least expensive method of production. For example, a greater number of panel units (see photo) would reduce the manufacturing costs if the size of orders justifies this. However, note that an increased number of panel units will also result in higher tool costs. So that we can prepare an accurate calculation, please give us details of the total quantity and individual batch sizes and we will prepare a cost-optimised offer for you.
