District Calendar Update - Last Day of School is June 9th
In order to receive full funding from Michigan Department of Education, the District is required to hold 176 student days of instruction, 1098 hours of instruction and 30 hours of professional development. Due to the number of school cancellations this year and the fact that
MDE did not waive any additional days, we will be required to make up two student days of
instruction. Therefore, the following changes have been made to our District Calendar:
June 3 Full Day for All Students
June 4 Full Day for All Students
June 5 High School Students attend AM Only – Exams and Records
Full Day for K-8 Students
June 8 All Students attend AM only – Exams and Records
June 9 All Students attend AM only – Exams and Records - LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

SHHS to Launch Medical Assisting Program Cohort in Fall 2015
South Haven Public Schools – College opportunities are currently available in a multitude of forms to high
school students. In recent years, public schools have been trending toward delivering college programming
through Middle College programs/schools. In the fall of 2015, South Haven High School will be piloting its
first Middle College program through Lake Michigan College, specifically targeting the Medical Assisting
pathway for its first cohort. Here’s what you interested students/parents need to know:
What is Middle College? A Middle College Program is a partnership between a local high school and its
neighboring post-secondary institution that offers students an opportunity to take both college classes and
high school classes concurrently. Often times, the college classes being taken by a Middle College student
can also count for high school credit, applying the two birds with one stone theory. Ideally, in a Middle
College candidate’s early years of high school, he/she would take primarily all high school courses counting
toward high school graduation. As the student progresses, a higher percentage of college courses (associated
with a specific pathway leading to a college certificate or degree) is introduced into the student’s schedule one
semester at a time until the student is taking primarily all college courses.
What’s in it for the students? It’s a universal fact that: college is expensive, it’s an investment in a student’s
future, applicants with degrees are eligible for higher paying jobs and the less debt you have after college the
better off you’ll be. With that being said, having SHPS pay for your student’s college education alleviates
some of the most common barriers keeping able and willing students from college opportunities. Furthermore, aside from the financial benefits, a Middle College model offers the opportunity for students to be
gradually released into the academic rigors of college as opposed to the traditional post-graduation plunge
into full time college. Students will be supported and mentored from both the high school and college side to
ensure support throughout a process that isn’t complete until a college degree/certificate is obtained.
What’s the catch? SHPS will be investing in each of its Middle College students by paying for their entire
certificate program. In return, students will also have to invest in themselves. These are real college classes,
and are not adjusted or altered for high school students. Therefore, dedication to the program and all of its requirements isn’t a catch; it’s a must to ensure graduation. In addition to committing effort toward the college
program, students will also commit time. Upon entering the Middle College Program, students are agreeing
to continue/finish their college program with SHHS/LMC the year after their initial graduation date. This
will lead to a student obtaining both their high school diploma and a college certificate/degree only one year
removed from high school.
Why Medical Assisting? Employment/job growth projections for this field according to the U.S. Department
of Labor are currently projecting a 29% increase in job availability, and a national average salary of $29,370/
year. In addition to positive job availability and salary statistics, our very own South Haven Health System is
right here in our community to take advantage of.
Vision: The vision is that students will not just take a few college classes, and graduate with some college
credits, but will finish their certificate program and graduate as a highly employable applicant in great community.
Who’s eligible? ALL interested students/parents should inquire with a school guidance counselor for a review
of their academic standing and graduation status. Middle College program classes require passing scores on
entry reading, writing and math tests issued by the college prior to being accepted into the program.
An informational meeting and official sign up session for parents/students was hosted by South Haven High
School at Lake Michigan’s South Haven campus on Wednesday, May 6th at 6:00 P.M. All inquiries after that
meeting will gladly be accepted by the program’s director Travis Hargan at thargan@shps.org.
2015 Prom was a Huge Success!
The Class of 2016 is pleased to announce
that Prom 2015 was a huge success! On

South Haven Public Schools newsletter • May 2015
From the Superintendent
Dear Parents
Members:
and
Community
Just a few months ago it seemed like
winter would never end. Suddenly
Spring is here, and now we find ourselves saying our goodbyes to another
group of amazing graduates and preparing for summer activities and next
year’s programming. Here are a few
examples of summer activities and
new programs for the next school year:
Summer School will be available for eligible students,
grades K-12. It will focus on core curriculum areas in the
K-5 grades, and will include credit recovery opportunities
for secondary students. Summer school will run July 6thAug 13th.
YDC/PAL is partnering with SHPS to offer a summer
program that will be available for all students from 8:00
a.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Lincoln Elementary beginning June
22nd.
SHPS Summer Migrant Program will be hosted at
Maple Grove Elementary from June 23rd until August
13th. The program is available to children from birth
through grade 8. Students will have opportunities to
build their academic skills as well as participate in enrichment activities, including weekly swim classes and field
trips.
In collaboration with many agencies, South Haven
Public Schools plans to launch a summer bus program
during the summer of 2015. Each week the bus will stop
in three or more locations in the community and provide
a meal and a book to over 350 children per week. In addition, a nutrition educator will also be on hand to incorporate healthy eating concepts and physical activities at each
stop.
South Haven Public Schools serves more than 401,151
breakfasts, lunches and snacks during the school year, and
will serve an estimated 21,585 meals and snacks during
the summer.
Next year, North Shore Elementary will implement an
iCreate lab as part of the related arts schedule for all students. In this program, 4th and 5th grade students will
have the opportunity to learn app design and coding, as
well as other high-tech applications.
Next year, Lincoln and Maple Grove will implement a
K-3 STEM related arts course for students. This will provide students with the opportunity to conduct projectbased activities in the area of math and science, which
may include rockets, robotics, app design and coding.
Next year, South Haven Schools will also include an
Academically Talented course where students will have
the opportunity to work above grade level on projects that
foster their specific abilities and interests.
Beginning next school year our 1st - 5th grade students
will all have daily access to 1:1 technology (iPad and
Chromebooks). 6th - 12th grade students will have daily
access to 1:1 technology in Math and Language Arts. By
2017, all 6th - 12th grade students will have daily access to
1:1 technology in all content areas.
Next year’s 1st - 3rd grade students will be the only students in west Michigan to have access to the eSpark program on their iPads. The eSpark program allows teachers
to create the most effective blended learning environments
for students in the area of math by creating previously
inconceivable classroom activities. In this year’s pilot program in 3rd grade math, our students mastered 248 standards and gained 13 percentage points on pre- and postassessments after only 6 weeks of use.
The High School and Middle School will implement
positive behavior support programs. A positive behavior
support committee in each building will work with staff to
develop lessons to explicitly teach appropriate and expected behaviors. Students who are found displaying positive
RAM behavior during school or at school events will be
recognized and rewarded using a variety of strategies.
As always, I would like to mention what a privilege
it has been to serve in a district with such a committed
board, talented and dedicated staff and supportive community. The progress our district has made over the past
two years is clear evidence that our programs and services
will soon be unparalleled in Southwest Michigan.
3
Upcoming Retirements Announced
The following school district employees will be retiring following the 2014-15
school year. We thank them for their many years of service to the school district!
Amy Anspaugh
Amy has worked with SHPS for 25 years at Central Elementary and at North
Shore Elementary. In her tenure at SHPS, Mrs. Anspaugh has been a 5th
grade classroom teacher, 4th / 5th grade multi-age classroom teacher, and 4th
grade transition room teacher. For the past few years, she has worked as the
Title 1 teacher at North Shore and has been instrumental in the development
of a strong Response to Intervention program in both math and reading. She's
worked along with the building's paraprofessionals, tailoring a program that
focuses on data to drive quality instruction and meeting the needs of all learners. Amy Anspaugh has been a valued member of our team at North Shore as
well as a valued member of our district for 25 years. We thank Mrs. Anspaugh
for her dedicated service to the children of the Greater South Haven area!
Lori Flower
South Haven Public Schools' Early Childhood team will be missing a key
member when school starts in September due to the retirement of pre-kindergarten teacher, Lori Flower. Mrs. Flower has dedicated 17 years to the young
children of South Haven. During her tenure she has taught pre-kindergarten,
kindergarten and third grade. Many of her summers were spent teaching in
the migrant program. She would often visit the camps in the evenings to play
games with the children and to read books with the migrant parents and children. Games or snacks would usually accompany the story she presented. She often kept in touch with these families as they moved to Texas, Florida
or other southern states. Her kindness and compassion to the children and
families of our district will be greatly missed. The students and staff of Maple
Grove wish her all the best as she enjoys her retirement. Jeff Lamphier and Vicki Slocum
Baseline Middle Principal Dr. William Stitt addresses the following to Mr.
Lamphier and Ms. Slocum: “Mr. Jeff Lamphier will retire from South Haven
Public Schools this June after thirty-eight years of dedicated service. Mrs.
Slocum will retire from South Haven Public Schools in June after twenty-six
years of wonderful service. Let me wish both of you much happiness in your
retirement and thank you for years of teaching and the many other contributions
you have made to South Haven Public Schools. It has been an honor and a
pleasure to get to know both of you. I hold you in high esteem. You are not only
caring human beings but professional educators in every sense of the word. I
know the staff and students at Baseline Middle School will miss both of you. It
is my sincere hope that your retirement years will bring you joy and fulfillment.
Best wishes, and don’t forget to visit us when you have the opportunity.”
Betty Sill
Betty has worked for South Haven Public School as a paraprofessional for
20 years, 10 years at Central Elementary School and 10 years at North Shore
Elementary. She has been an integral part of the Title 1 program and our North
Shore family. Mrs. Sill also serves North Shore in a volunteer capacity, often
staying late or returning to help with evening family events. She is always willing
to go the extra mile to help teachers and students. Her service, professionalism
and dedication have served the SHPS district and children of the Greater South
Haven area well!
Susana (Garcia) Martinez - Retired March 27, 2015
(29.5 years of service)
Susana began working for SHPS in the Fall of 1985 as a secretary in the
Migrant Education program at Central School, then moved to Baseline Middle
School when it was built. In 1995 she transferred to the Administration Center
taking over special education secretarial duties with student enrollment duties
added later. While working full-time at SHPS Susana earned an Associates
Degree from Davenport College. Susana crossed paths with many people in
the school district over her 30 years and will be greatly missed. We will miss
her smiling face at the front desk of the Administration Center, but wish her
much happiness during her retirement years as she enjoys well-deserved time
with her family.
Julia Wood – Data Coordinator – Retiring August 1, 2015
(9 years of service)
“Julie” began working for SHPS in September, 2008 as a paraprofessional in
the computer lab at Maple Grove Elementary. In February, 2012 she transferred to a secretarial position at North Shore Elementary, before moving on to
the Administration Center in September, 2012 becoming the Data Coordinator
for the school district. She also performed duties assisting the Superintendent
and the Board of Education. Julie has been a dedicated and hard working
employee for the district, who has some big shoes to fill. We wish Julie all the
best as she enjoys her retirement years.

Do You Tweet?
Twitter has become far more than the go-to social media
of today’s youth. It is increasingly becoming a tool for
community, communication, and change. South Haven
Public Schools has embraced Twitter as a way to reach
out to all stakeholders. Twitter has many educational
uses both in and out of the classroom.
At the secondary level we have many teachers using
Twitter to communicate directly with students. They post
assignment reminders, schedules, and important information which their students can instantly see. Teachers also
use Twitter to allow students to post comments, questions, assignments, and infographics which are then seen
not only by the teacher but also their classmates. This
allows for real time collaboration wherever the students
may be.
Twitter is also an important tool for district communication. You can get breaking news about snow days, sporting events, and school functions. By following teachers,
administrators, and coaches you can get instant updates
on what is going on at South Haven Public Schools. At
a recent school board meeting 6-12 Instructional Tech
Coach Danielle Hendry discussed Twitter with our school
board members so you can even follow their Twitter
feeds!
One of the most exciting uses of Twitter is as a way for
us to show our Ram Pride. We can brag about all the
exciting things happening in South Haven on Twitter. We
are so proud of our students, teachers, and community
and Twitter allows us to showcase our schools in an innovative way.
What is a hashtag? That silly little symbol that previous generations referred to as the pound sign is actually a powerful tool on Twitter. It allows you to search for
and categorize posts. South Haven Public Schools has
adopted the hashtag #shpsrams. To find the latest and
greatest information on South Haven Public Schools login
to your twitter account and search for #shpsrams. You
can also use this hashtag when tweeting about SHPS!
If you don’t already have an account it is easy to get
started. Simply create an account and follow some
SHPS people.

Baseline Students Clean Up for Earth Day!
Students in Mrs. Cole’s and Mr. Dubina’s science classes
celebrated Earth Day on April, 22 by cleaning up Baseline.
Throughout the day, both classes collected over 40 bags of
trash, tires, and other junk on the grounds of the school and surrounding areas. Because of their efforts, the classes became a
part of “A Billion Acts of Green,” which is an international movement to protect the planet and secure a sustainable future; and
their act was logged with Earth Day Network!
Baseline Middle School Students Learn to Cook!
This year some of Baseline Middle School’s seventh
graders have been dabbling in the kitchen. Students
have been learning to whip up a batch of granola,
chicken soup, apple crisp, honey garlic meatballs,
pasta salad, twice baked potatoes, and much, much,
more. The class meets during 5th hour and with lunch
falling smack dab in the middle it has created some
interesting challenges with regard to recipe prep and
cook times. The students have adapted well and only
once did the timing necessitate a do over.
The class has ranged in size from 31 to 55 students.
It will come as no surprise to learn that not all are able
to fit in the kitchen space at one time. Teacher, Miss
Maxwell, put together a magazine project for those that
are not on kitchen duty. Each student is designing their
own food magazine complete with recipes, chef interviews, culinary funnies, food related polls, and even a
page from the editor.
One highlight of their year in the kitchen would have
to be when volunteers Kristyn Diekema and Donna
Geisler came each day for two weeks to work with all
fifty-five students. They taught the children, and Miss
Maxwell, how to make pasta. When the pasta had
dried the students took their creations home to share
with the family. Some served them up with just a little
butter and salt. Others found recipes such as Fettucine
Alfredo, an excellent way to showcase their new talent.
The class has been a great success.
Project Lead The Way at Baseline Middle School
Seventh grade students in Mrs. Stein's Project Lead the Way
class check the stain resistance of fabric treated with nanotechnology. They test then demonstrate fog eliminating goggles,
shoe insole warmers, high strength fishing line, protective sunscreen, and other products all engineered with the technology of
nano particles. Students also create contained oil spills and learn
real-world methods for restoring the environment using nanoengineering.
8th Grade Science Class Tours Riveer Co.
On Monday, April 27th the 8th graders in Ms. Bidol’s science
class at Baseline had an opportunity to visit Riveer Co. in South
Haven. The experience gave them a chance to see how the
CAD program they are working with is used outside the classroom. Students were able to tour the plant and see parts created on the computer actually cut and assembled. They were
even able to take home a souvenir. Thank you Riveer, and most
especially John Goodell, Andy Litts, and Pat Miller for making this
valuable experience possible!

Science Night at Lincoln
Baseline Middle School Art Club
Congratulations to Baseline artists, Leah Bennett and Araceli Lopez! They had their
drawings selected for the front and back of the 2014-15 BMS Yearbook cover.
On April 16th, Lincoln Elementary hosted a Science Night. Both Lincoln and Maple
Grove families were invited. Over 400 people attended the event! The SHPS
Nutrition Department did a wonderful job serving dinner to everyone who attended.
Pizza, salad, and dinosaur track cookies were enjoyed by all!
The main event featured Paleo Joe and two chemists from Albemarle. Paleo Joe is
a real archeologist who has gone on many digs out west looking for dinosaur bones.
He shared many fossils that he found with the students, but he really captured their
attention when he showed a life-size picture of a T-Rex skull with him inside! The
chemists from Albemarle also put on an impressive demonstration. The students
learned about chemistry through hands-on experiments. They even got to chill their
juice using dry ice!
A special thank you to Rick Olsen from Albemarle for volunteering his evening. He
may have inspired some future chemists!

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER – LaTonya Gill
This year has been an amazing, yet dynamic year for the
staff and students at North Shore. Teachers and students,
alike, have been learning and refining their skills in the use
of technology, in writing, and in mathematics.
4th grade teachers and students were provided
Chromebooks in the classroom to enhance teaching and
learning. The addition of this technology has helped to
transform classrooms into learning environments where
students are engaged, collaborative, and developing their
critical thinking skills. Pictured in the center, CBD technology
consultant, Pete Grostic, checks a screencast to determine
how students came up with answers to an open-ended math
question.
Pictured top left, Erin Klein, MACUL Pre-K - 12 Michigan
Teacher of the Year (2014), works with staff on strategies for
teaching writing. According to Mrs. Klein, “We are teaching
the writer, not the writing.” Meaning, we work with students
at their own individual levels and work to refine skills on an
individual basis and/or through small group instruction. As a
result of our teachers being dedicated to teaching curriculum with fidelity and embedding some of these best practice
strategies, students produced some very impressive persuasive writing essays.
Finally, our math curriculum committee has been involved
in year-long professional development with math consultant,
Heidi Boley, pictured top right. With her guidance, the math
curriculum committee has worked nonstop to adapt and
refine grade level math assessments through deeper study of
the standards and depth of knowledge, as well as incorporating research-based instructional strategies, aimed at helping
students develop better skills (conceptual, process, and computational) in mathematics.
This has been such a great year of learning for both staff
and students. We look forward to our continuous growth as
a staff so that we are well equipped with the tools to ensure
the future success of our students.
North Shore Students Visit
the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery
On Wednesday, April 29, 2015 and Thursday, April 30, 2015
the fifth grade students from North Shore Elementary attended
a field trip to the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery. The trip was an
extension of the classroom project that fifth grade teacher
Bryan Edwards has been working on all year. Mr. Edwards has
been working with the hatchery on a project called Salmon in
the Classroom for which he was accepted as a participant for
this year.
This instrumental learning experience grants students the
opportunity to raise, care for and maintain the salmon in their
classroom from fall until spring. The program culminates at the
end of the school year with the release of the young fish in a
local watershed that feeds one of the Great Lakes. Students
and teachers participate in a program to follow the life cycle of
salmon from eggs, to hatchling to smolt, starting in the classroom.
Mr. Edwards picked up salmon eggs early in the school year
and has been cultivating them into healthy young salmon ready
to be released into the Black River. The release will be scheduled for sometime in May. Mr. Edwards arranged the field trip
so that the fifth grade students could see the hatchery in action
raising the millions of eggs that they cultivate every spring.
Students toured the hatchery, seeing how the eggs are cultivated, how they are cared for, and saw a variety of stages that the
fish go through before they are released into Michigan’s lakes,
rivers, and streams. Students also enjoyed a hike around the
hatchery grounds culminating in a chance to feed the trout and
sturgeon that are kept in the show pond. It was a great trip and
it was a lot of fun to see how the DNR works to keep our lakes
Earth Day Celebration at
North Shore Elementary
On Wednesday, April 22, North Shore
Elementary School celebrated Earth Day!
Dianne Braybrook, from Sarett Nature Center,
came and shared her love of the environment
with us. She brought in a variety of animals and
talked about the many ways we can help take
care of this amazing planet we call home. In
addition to talking about reducing, reusing and
recycling, she also taught us about the plight of
the monarch butterfly. We learned that monarchs are in the midst of returning to Michigan
from their overwintering habitat in Mexico and
that their numbers have greatly declined in
recent years. She encouraged us to mow less
grass (reduce lawns) and to plant native milkweed and wildflower species. Dianne also introduced us to a variety of native turtles, frogs and
snakes. The students had a great time learning
about the care of the earth, meeting a variety of
animals and even petting a couple of snakes.
This program was sponsored by the Liberty
Hyde Bailey Museum. The museum will also be
offering a children’s program, Bailey’s Budding
Naturalists, this summer. Dianne will be there
every day to share her knowledge and love for
the environment. This program is offered to students 6 to 11 years old for a week in June and a
week in July. In addition, the museum is hosting
a “Voices from the Land” workshop for educators
June 18th and 19th. This workshop is sponsored by the Monarch Teacher’s Network out of
New Jersey. Teachers will learn how to integrate
nature study into writing, art, technology, science
and math. Several South Haven Public School
teachers will be attending. To find out more
information about these exciting programs you
can contact the museum, the Monarch Teacher’s
Network or Rebecca Linstrom. Although Earth
Day is formally recognized once a year, taking
care of our planet is something we need to work
on every day. Thanks to Sarett Nature Center
and the Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum, South
Haven students have the opportunity to deepen
their knowledge on the care of the earth and to
develop a greater appreciation for this amazing
planet we call home.
North Shore’s Salad Bar
healthy and stocked with fish!
The Hatchery is open from 10-4pm Tuesday through Saturday
and noon-4pm on Sundays. It is closed on Mondays until summer time. It is free to visit, and there are daily tours available.
During the summer they hold regular activities for kids including
fishing, archery, scavenger hunts, and feeding the fish. Visit the
hatchery to walk a trail, tour through the museum, take a tour of
the hatchery or just enjoy nature. It is a beautiful spot!
Thanks to the generosity of Blue Cross
Blue Shield, Meijer, and “Let’s Move Salad
Bars to Schools”, North Shore has received
the gift of a FREE salad bar. This gift,
worth over $3500, will allow students to
make their own fresh, healthy salads as a
fully reimbursable meal. Students love the
variety of choices and the opportunity to
make healthier choices. We had over 109
students eat the first day! Thank you to
Blue Cross & Blue Shield and Meijer for this
fabulous opportunity to expand our healthy
eating options!

Lansing Field Trips
North Shore's 4th grade students visited
the Capitol Complex in Lansing on March
10th and 17th. This field trip is funded by our
Annual Walk/Jog/Athon. Students departed on
luxury motor coaches to Lansing. While there,
they visited the Capitol Building, the Historical
Museum and the Impression 5 Science Center
as a culminating activity to the Social Studies
unit on government. Some classes were also
greeted by Representative Aric Nesbitt. Before
returning to North Shore, staff, students, and
volunteers enjoyed dinner at Brody Hall on the
Michigan State University campus.
Michigan History Day
On April 24, North Shore students participated in a Michigan History Day program. The
South Haven Historical Association sponsors this annual event. Local crafts men and
women come to North Shore to share their
hobbies and crafts as they relate to Michigan
history. Students were able to view and/or
participate in activities such as spinning wool,
basket weaving, blacksmithing, fur trapping,
making snowshoes, and petting the oxen,
Marco and Polo.
Volunteer Appreciation
North Shore held its Annual Volunteer
Appreciation Breakfast on Thursday, April
16. Over 80 peoples attended the breakfaststaff, students, and parents. North Shore staff
members prepared casseroles, fruit, donuts,
and muffins for the volunteers. The volunteers
were also presented with pins and certificates
of appreciation for partnering as a TEAM,
Together Everyone Achieves More.

Palisades Teaches About Clean Energy
A group of volunteers from Palisades came
and taught Lincoln Elementary students about
nuclear energy with a variety of activities for
each grade level. Kindergarteners read a book
and watched a movie explaining nuclear energy.
The second graders had the exciting opportunity
to make candy models of nuclear reactors. The
first and third grade classes participated in a
hands-on game of nuclear fission, which involved
hundreds of balloons in the gym. This event,
which occurred on Earth Day, was a great way
to learn about how science is used in our local
community.

ate, what habitat they lived in, and how they
were taken care of at the Nature Center.
Lincoln Elementary Gets
a Green School Award
Lincoln Elementary has been recognized
as an official Michigan Green School. The
students in the school have been taking
initiatives to make their school more environmentally friendly. Thanks to the generosity of the South Haven Public Schools
Community Foundation for the grant that
funded this project. Some of the Eco-friendly
activities included writing persuasive letters
to our representatives, visiting websites to
teach us about what we can do to help, and
updating our library with materials to teach
about the environment. We also started a
school-wide recycling program that students
are in charge of doing every week. In Ms.
DeVries's classroom, the students have been
learning about composting with a worm bin
that they have been using to recycle their
food waste. The Green Schools activities culminated in a celebration of Earth Day.
Maple Grove students want to give a special

2015 MICHIGAN HISTORY
DAY STATE CHAMPIONS
ANNOUNCED
More than 470 Michigan elementary,
middle, and high school students participated in the Michigan History Day State
Finals on Saturday, April 25. The event
was held at Dewitt High School in Dewitt,
Michigan. Finalists chosen at the state
competition in the junior and senior divisions now move on to the national contest, called National History Day, held this
June in College Park, Md.
Michigan History Day offers a fascinating opportunity to move social science beyond routine learning. Students
perform research on an individually chosen topic. They then present their work
through the disciplines of writing, art,
literature, music, drama, and/or visual
communications. All entries were tied in
some way to the 2015 National History
Day theme, “Leadership and Legacy.”
A full list of winners is available on the
Historical Society of Michigan website
(www.hsmichigan.org).
South Haven students from the South
Haven History Club in grades from 4-12
participated in this competition after qualifying for state at a prior district competition. On April 25 at the state level competition for Michigan History Day, South
Haven had 11 teams go on to compete
following districts were held at Western
Michigan University:
North Shore Elementary- Youth category
Jillian Carey, Ethan Cole, Max Campbell, and
Rowan Clark presented a website on Jackie
Robinson.
Linus Resek presented a documentary on
Abraham Lincoln and placed third in the
state in his category.
Nic Sheppard presented an exhibit on Vlad the Impaler and
placed first in the state in his category. Youth Category participants do not go on to nationals and a
first, second and third place winner is chosen for the state.
Baseline Middle School- Junior category
Avery Daughtery and Jessee Ford presented a documentary
on Nikola Tesla.
Kyle Lewis, Maddox Uckele, and Lars Larson presented a
documentary on William Wallace.
Jina Patel presented a website on Ghandi.
Avery Ansinn and Elise Postma presented a performance on
Frederick Douglass.
South Haven High School (/Gobles)- Senior category
Brian Horan presented a website on George S. Patton.
Emma Simon presented a performance on Diane Crump and
was chosen as a national finalist.
Pictured are Joshua Bienz and Julia
Kuhens hanging up their greenhouses.
Tony Wise presented a performance on Gerald R. Ford and
was chosen as a national finalist.
Gladys Gonzalez and Garrett Fragala presented a performance on Al Capone and were chosen as national finalists.
A huge shout out to seniors Garrett (a six-time national
finalist) and Gladys (a four-time national finalist) who will
make their final trip to Maryland to represent Michigan in
the national competition this year. Gladys, Garrett, Tony,
and Emma will travel to College Park, Md. in June along
with their coaches, Julie Sheppard and Terri Wakild to represent South Haven. The National competition is a huge
expense for these students and coaches. Through the
continued support of donors, including the South Haven
Foundation and the Historical Society of South Haven,
Village Market who provides us with location to hold hot
dog and bake sales, and many local businesses who support us through donations for our online auction, and
many others, friends, family, and supporters of education
and the love of history, we are able to travel to and participate in the district, state, and national competitions.
Science is Fun
at Maple Grove
Students in 2nd grade at Maple Grove
have been participating in hands on science experiments this year and building
cooperative learning skills. Some of the
experiments that students have worked
on include students working in groups
with measurement experiments, measuring the distance and time of the movement of different objects. Because Earth
Day has just passed, we decided to start
the Plant's Life Unit. Students are making great connections! Students have
made their own greenhouses with different types of beans growing inside. We
will be looking at the parts of seeds and
plants more closely. Students will also
make connections to math by reinforcing measurement and graphing skills as
well as document the growing process of
their seeds. Students are very excited to
watch their seeds grow over the next few
weeks!

Baseline Readers
Instructor Jennifer Enos
Forty one Baseline Middle School students experienced a new class this year,
Scholastic’s Read 180. Many neighboring schools and now South Haven Public
Schools use Read 180 to improve students’ reading ability. Read 180 is a proven course designed to assess and provide
intervention for students on a continuous
basis. The course is made up of four different components: whole group instruction, small group instruction, online software for spelling, writing, reading, and
speaking practice, and independent reading. Each component of the course works
to move a student from their beginning
reading level to higher reading ability in
an accelerated pace than just students in
one ELA class per year. Students have been known to
move up multiple grade levels in one year because of
this class. This year, we’ve had most students move up
multiple reading Lexile levels.
Lexile levels are used to level our students’ reading
ability. A Lexile level is a measurement used to show a
student’s comprehension ability. It is the most common
international way of finding texts that match up well
with a reader’s ability. Lexile levels are similar to grade
leveling books, but Lexile levels are better indicators of
text difficulty versus whether a student is near the average of students at their own age group.
Continuous assessment of student growth is needed
to ensure each student is appropriately learning at their
instructional level. If a student is taught at the frustration
level, it is too challenging and students often give up
and do not find learning productive. Read 180 software
and the teachers create an environment for continuous
growth and possibilities to move into a higher Lexile
level by pairing each
individual student up with activities that are at their
ability level. This year our Read 180 Lexile levels ranged
from BR, beginning readers, to a Lexile level of 850.
Success
Seventy percent of our students have already shown
significant increases in their Lexile level as of their 2nd
assessment done in December. This was only three
months after the students started Read 180. The students are excited to see their new Lexile level in the final
Scholastic Reading Inventory that will be completed in
late May. We expect 100% of students to have increased
in at least 1 or more Lexile levels.

eling positive reading behavior by spending time daily
reading a book, newspaper, or magazine. As a parent or
guardian you could ask your student to read the newspaper article you just read and then discuss it. It could
result in some bonding time as well as practice gaining
practical reading skills. You could request that your student read at least 15 minutes at home before bed or if
they do not have homework for the evening, they could
find articles online that both you and the student could
read and discuss. Discussion is key in the reading process because comprehension is where most of our older
readers struggle. Spelling and writing skills can be
practiced by requiring students to use proper grammar
during text message conversations with you and family
members or writing on Facebook. If you visit the library,
check on your student’s book choice. Go to lexile.com to
look up the text complexity of the book. These small routines will improve a student’s reading ability
Sports Physicals
Playing sports keeps you fit and is fun.
It is important to know if it is safe to participate in a specific sport. A sports physical focuses on your
well-being as it related to playing a sport. It’s more limited that a regular physical, but it’s a lot more
specific about athletic issues.
When and Where
Community Wide Sports Physicals will be held at the Shoreline Wellness and Rehabilitation Center, 955
South Bailey Ave. on the following dates:
Thursday, May 28, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, July 28, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
The cost is $10
These sports physicals are being offered by the South Haven Health System Foundation.
