Macbeth Act 2 Scenes 1 and 2
Fill in the gaps or choose the correct words
Act 2 scene 1 is set at Macbeth’s castle/the heath/King Duncan’s palace. The first two
characters to come on stage are _____________ and _______________. We know that
the scene is dark because Fleance says “The moon is down/Is this a dagger which I see
before me/Fair is foul and foul is fair”
Banquo says to Fleance “And yet I would not sleep” this tells us that he is feeling
happy/worried/annoyed at this point in the play. We know that he is also very
nervous/uncaring/calm as he shouts “Who’s there?” when Macbeth comes along.
When Banquo and Macbeth have a conversation about where King Duncan is Banquo says
that the King “hath been in unusual pleasure” so we know that King Duncan went to bed in a
____________ mood.
After they have talked about the King Banquo asks Macbeth about the three
_____________ . Macbeth says “I think not of them” but we know that he is
_______________ as he is already plotting to kill King Duncan so that the predictions will
come true.
Soon Macbeth is left alone on the stage. In his speech he talks about a ____________ in
front of him. It is pointing the way to King Duncan’s bedroom, we know this because
Macbeth says: “A dagger of the mind/And on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood/Thou
marshall’st me the way that I was going.”
As Macbeth leaves the stage to commit the murder the audience can hear the sound of a
_____________ that summons Duncan “to heaven or to hell.”
The audience do not see the murder so the next character to come onto the stage at the
beginning of Act 2 scene 2 is ___________________ . We know that she has had to have a
____________ to give her courage to carry out the deed as she says “That which hath made
them drunk, hath made me bold.”
Macbeth does not have as much courage. He is feeling _______________ because he
comes onto the stage saying “Who’s there? What ho?”. He has murdered the king. Lady
Macbeth could not do it herself because ______________________________________ .
At this point ___________________ is in control of the situation as Macbeth is panicking.
We know that he is upset at what he has done because he could not say
________________ and he is not able to _______________ .
Lady Macbeth calls Macbeth a wimp when he says “ Look on’t again, I dare not”, her reply to
him is ________________________________ . Macbeth hears a _____________ sound
and this makes him more nervous. Lady Macbeth takes charge and says “Retire we to our
chamber” so that they are not discovered by anyone else in that castle.
At the end of this scene I would describe Macbeth as _______________ ,
________________ and __________________ but Lady Macbeth is _________________
and ____________________ in the scene.
