2013-2014 PDK EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT PDK CONGRATULATES THE 2014-2015 CLASS OF EMERGING LEADERS. These young leaders in education were selected from a competitive field of applicants on the basis of their outstanding professional accomplishments. The PDK Emerging Leaders foundation program is for pioneers, age 40 or younger, who are making a difference in the field of education. This program recognizes innovators, thought leaders, problem solvers, and change agents for the work that they are doing to improve education. Each spring, PDK solicits applications and selects a new class of Emerging Leaders. The new class is announced in early fall. “The Emerging Leaders program is our way of paying it forward in public education,” said William J. Bushaw, PDK International’s chief executive officer. “We find people under 40 who are standouts in the profession, and we bring them together for a weekend of networking and expertise sharing in the nation’s capital. By investing in these young leaders, we are investing in the future.” 2014-2015 CLASS OF PDK EMERGING LEADERS Katie N. Anderson Andrew Frishman Brittny Mandarino Brian G. Remember how you felt when you knew you contributed to something significant? Find that feeling again by joining us in supporting the PDK Educational Foundation, which also includes the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment. The PDK Educational Foundation Board of Governors is dedicated to using funds donated by Kappans worldwide in exactly the ways you, our donors, intended by supporting and improving public education. The board is equally committed to ensuring that contributions from Thetans support long-standing PLT initiatives. We take our financial responsibility to our foundation donors seriously and always willingly share information about our annual expenditures. We appreciate the spirit of giving that our Kappan and Thetan families share and are grateful for their commitment to supporting education initiatives that make our world a better place. Patricia Williams Ron Thorpe The generosity of all Thetans and Kappans makes a huge difference in so many lives, and we sincerely thank you for your gifts and continued support. Fogarty, Jr. Director of Development Terri Lawson Assistant Director for Development and Publications 2 PDK/Gallup Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools Highly respected and widely followed by the media, the PDK/Gallup poll is a trustworthy resource for families, education professionals, researchers, and policy makers. By asking the key questions and employing cutting-edge polling science, the poll delivers information crucial to multiple audiences. PDK’s partner for all 46 years is Gallup, the foremost name in polling in America and around the world. The poll is a scientifically-based survey of more than 1,000 Americans, 18 years and older. This year, we learned that Americans support higher entrance requirements for would-be teachers, one year of supervised practice teaching, and national board certification, but Americans don’t support teacher evaluation systems based on student standardized test scores. The PDK/Gallup poll is financed solely by the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation, which allows PDK to offer an independent and unbiased report of American public opinion of its public schools. Of course, the PDK Educational Foundation is able to continue this work because of your generous support. CENTER ON EDUCATION POLICY The Center on Education Policy (CEP) operates as an independent center housed at the George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development. As CEP’s executive director, Maria Ferguson continues the center’s important research, much of it currently focused on implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The center’s research also assists education policymakers, particularly in Washington, D.C., and at state education agencies, to make more informed decisions about education initiatives. Maria also authors a monthly column in Kappan magazine entitled “Washington View,” providing readers an understanding of Washington, D.C., policy decisions and their implications for educators across the U.S. The PDK Foundation Board of Governors affirms its continuing commitment to support the center’s important work. Maria Ferguson 3 FEA “FEA has allowed me to feel like I can make a difference in other people’s lives.” – Tiona Ramseur, Senior, Smyrna High School, Smyrna, Del. The Future Educators Association® (FEA), a member of the PDK International family of associations, is a student organization dedicated to supporting young people interested in education-related careers. FEA is a national network of more than 10,000 student and teacher/mentor participants in school-based, grow-yourown-teacher programs. “The Future Educators Association is all about giving young people a truly authentic experience in trying out teaching.” – Dan Brown, FEA Executive Director, National Board Certified Teacher In 2013-2014, FEA took significant strides in strengthening its program and expanding its reach: First-Class Resources and Opportunities • With perhaps its strongest volume yet, FEA’s official magazine, Go Teach, once again won the APEX Grand Award for its exceptional content. • FEA revamped its 19 competitive events to raise the bar for quality and relevance. Thanks to generous donations by PDK members, all national student champions at the 2014 FEA National Conference in Minneapolis were rewarded for their exceptional achievements with cash prizes. Growth and Impact • In 2013-2014, FEA membership grew to 10,598 members, a 6% increase over the previous year. Currently, FEA has active programs in 570 schools across the country. • From 2013 to 2014, participation in the FEA Honor Society jumped from 757 to 944 students, a 25% increase. • FEA maintained its commitment to diversity and seeks to build on its progress. While the national teaching force is 17% nonwhite, FEA membership in 2013-2014 was 30% nonwhite. Looking Ahead FEA signed a groundbreaking agreement with Boston University to launch FEA programs in the Boston area with BU as the organizing hub, creating an inspiring precedent for more robust higher education involvement in FEA. 4 FEA is collaborating with strategy firm Education First, digital strategy firm RemoteSOCIAL, and brandraising firm Big Duck to develop and implement plans for taking FEA to the next level, with that evolved vision set to launch with a new name, Educators Rising, in 2015. Please join us in celebrating the power and the promise of FEA (soon to be Educators Rising) by donating through the PDK Educational Foundation or by funding a scholarship for a deserving student. “Future Educators Association gave me the opportunity to be a real leader in my school and community.” – Ocey Holland, FEA National Student President, University of Louisville Class of 2018 5 2014 Scholarships and Awards ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Joseph H.
