Concordia University Consolidated Laundry 2014 AN N UAL R EPO RT A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS Chair: Keren Brown Wilson, PhD Vice Chair: Gary Withers, JD Treasurer: Tony Leineweber, MBA Secretary: Ken Burgess, JD Charles Bloom, MBA Gloria Cavanaugh Joanne Handy, RN, MS Marvin Kaiser, PhD Sean Kuni Carmen Largaespada, PhD Nichole Maher, MPH Jay Stowers Carron Suddreth Dave Tupper Karen Wayne In a world where we struggle to overcome the horrors of war, unrelenting civil unrest, frightening contagions, devastating natural disasters and abject poverty, JFRF’s mission might seem idealistic: The Jessie F. Richardson Foundation empowers communities, in resource constrained areas, to provide multi-generational support for underserved older adults. EMERITUS BOARD MEMBERS We believe our mission statement provides a powerful set of clues about how to, as Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” It is testimony to the power of individuals to work collectively for a common good even when circumstances seem daunting, as they often are in many areas of the world. COUNCIL OF ADVISORS 2014 was a memorable year for JFRF. We started the year in receipt of a report describing 10 years of work in Nicaragua. That report detailed the approach and results of a model designed to help communities with inadequate resources develop sustainable strategies to support older adults in need. Those successful results told us we had moved from developing an approach to strategizing how to replicate those efforts. Martha Pelaez, PhD Janet Sehon Connie Baldwin Richard Browdie Michael DeShane, PhD Mauro Hernandez, PhD Robert Hudson, PhD Ellsworth P. Ingraham Robert Kane, MD Rosalie Kane, PhD Marshall Kapp, MPH, JD Susan Reinhard, RN, PhD Steven Vick JFRF empowers by helping create civic infrastructure and identifying, strengthening and deploying community assets. That phrase, “teach a man how to fish,” turns out to be key to sustainable change. Direct assistance, combined with individual and organizational training, and income generating opportunities can yield powerful results. Now, when you look at some highlights of these results in our annual report, you will recognize not only that change can happen, but that it can happen in unlikely places. PG. 2 PG. 3 NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER - JINOTEPE, NI 2014 H IG H LIG HTS Renovation of the hogar (elder care facility) in Jinotepe, Nicaragua, progressed rapidly thanks to the hard work of the community, staff and volunteers. Local leadership in Nicaragua throughout this process has been provided by volunteers, who have been coordinating the renovation of the hogar to better meet the needs of the elders who live there, as well as construction of a National Training Center at the site. Set to open in 2015, this National Training Center is the first of its kind for para-professional elder care in Central America. Individuals and organizations from all corners of Nicaragua will go there to learn more about elder care, creating a system of better care and services, as well as furthering career opportunities for people looking to work with elders. Furthermore, JFRF intends that this training center will become a model for more like it, inspiring and empowering communities throughout this region and globally. JFRF STAFF CHANGES In 2014, JFRF added staff in the home office and in Nicaragua to meet the needs of its growing programs: Beth Mitchell, Administrative & Communications Specialist, Clackamas, Oregon Samanta Lacayo Trujillo, Partnership Coordinator, Nicaragua PG. 4 MORE 2014 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • JFRF board members, Marvin Kaiser, Keren Brown Wilson and Carmen Largaespada, made two presentations to the W. K. Kellogg Foundation Latin American Fellows on the JFRF asset-based community development approach. • JFRF entered into a partnership with the elder home in Sébaco, Engineers Without Borders (national and Portland chapters) and the Nicaraguan Aging Advisory Council to develop a microbusiness fish farm project to generate income for the elder home. • JFRF began preparations to expand an intergenerational training program for the Catholic Youth of Nicaragua to facilitate intergenerational activities. • JFRF expanded its scholarships to American and Nicaraguan university students in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Nicaragua. These students provide direct assistance and training to local communities in six Nicaraguan regions. • JFRF built an expanded pharmacy, community clinic and therapy space in the National Training Center. • JFRF provided support to housing and food security programs in Appalachia, and Keren Brown Wilson addressed a regional joint aging/housing conference to discuss housing and service needs of elders in Appalachia.
