your own answers.

A word about our Fiber Studio Facilitator:
Peggy Coffey has been spinning,
weaving, dyeing, paper- & basket-making
for more than 30 years.
She has facilitated craft demonstrations
and workshops, judged and competed in
Handspun & Sheep-to-Shawl contests,
co-coordinated spinner’s retreats, &
co-founded the statewide network SWIFT
(Spinners and Weavers of Indiana Fibers
& Textiles.)
For 12 years Peggy wrote the Spinner’s Connection for Spin-Off
magazine. She holds an M.A. in Art from the University of
Indianapolis, with a major in textiles & ceramics.
“Part of the healing element of any activity is what takes
place while doing it—the process of how we do the task and
the meaning that we derive from doing it. Arts and crafts are
my adult form of play—they are a pathway for me to create
without fear. I can open my hands, mind and soul to what
might happen in the next moment. Often the outcome is to
witness a tangible, visible sign of my existence in the world as
a unique human being. Spinning and weaving are wonderful
ways to connect to the life-giving spirit within and without.
Making paper and writing are other important forms of
“therapy” for me—setting out on a journey to explore thoughts
and feelings; to understand the meaning of my life in this
time and space. Playing alone or with others can be a blessing
when we freely give and take our discoveries in the process.”“
~Peggy Coffey, hand spinner, weaver and papermaker

Weaving with Handspun Yarn
FS-020916 – Prairie Art
(For experienced spinners/must be able to spin
a
continuous yarn.)
Do you wonder how to spin yarns that are to be woven
on a loom? Participants construct a simple loom from
mat board in order to plan setts for handspun weaving
projects. You’ll explore and weave up 2-3 sample pieces
of your handspun to bring to the second session, where we’ll plan to use
the yarns in a project for a table loom. For the third session, bring
enough handspun yardage to prepare a warp for a weaving project to
complete on your own. Cost includes materials fee, handouts and some
wool/blended fibers to sample.
Note: this experience requires “homework” outside of class times.

Begin to Spin Yarn on a Wheel
FS-021216 A– Prairie Art
This experience is for those with little or no knowledge
of spinning yarn, or a great refresher course. We’ll
cover what makes a yarn a yarn, how a spinning wheel
works, and how to use and care for the wheel. Then
we’ll begin to draft fibers into yarn on the spinning
wheel.
Participants need a spinning wheel in working order. If you have one
you’re not sure is working, bring it anyway, or make arrangements with
MoonTree to rent one. Kindle or rekindle the fun of making homespun!

share tips on combining fibers. We’ll talk about spinning
different “commercial” preparations and about preventing health problems with your body or your “stash.”

Whatever Twill Be
FS-021316 – Prairie Art
(For those with no weaving experience, or as a refresher)
Experience the basics of weaving on a table loom.
Each participant will develop skills to identify loom
parts, set up the weaving process, understand the twill
threading pattern, and use the loom to complete two
small projects. There will be direction and instruction
every step of the way.
Homework/practice is part of learning the weaving process; the studio will
be available during prearranged hours to complete projects on your own.
This experience will serve as the foundation for other weaving experiences
offered at MoonTree, including those using the floor loom. Loom rental,
instruction, handouts, all tools and supplies are included.
Note: this experience requires “homework” outside of class times.

Warped to Weave
FS- 021616A – Prairie Arts
(For those with weaving experience.)
A four harness, jack-type floor loom will be set up with
commercial wool yarn at 22-24” width, to weave enough
yardage for a shawl or tunic.
To begin, we’ll review the loom set-up and do a one-to
two-inch sample of weaving before each participant
undertakes his/her own project.
Each participant will complete the weaving under direction of the mentor
within two weeks. During the last experience date, we’ll each finish
weaving, remove the web, and restore the floor loom set-up for next use.

4 in 4--Fiber Study
FS-021616B – Prairie Art
(For experienced spinners/must be able to spin a
continuous yarn.)
Would you like to explore new fibers to spin—animal
fibers, or combinations with plant or synthetic fibers?
We’ll start by selecting 4 fibers to spin from among a
variety available in one ounce samples.
We’ll learn how to evaluate each fiber, creating a
reference binder, with guidelines from Peggy for recording notes. In each
session, participants will join a discussion to compare the yarn they
studied since the last session. At our last meeting, everyone will bring
their completed reference binder and share their discoveries.
Note: this experience requires “homework” outside of class times.

From Ewe to Yarn
FS030216 – Prairie Art
Have you ventured to buy, or been gifted with a
“raw” fleece? And now you wonder what to do with
it? This experience is an opportunity to learn the
basics of sorting and washing usable fiber. For the
second meeting, bring your washed fleece—we’ll
prepare it for spinning, sampling possible yarns
with this fleece. By the final session, bring enough yarn (6-8 oz.) to
plan a small project—whether woven, knitted or crocheted. We’ll talk
about what to do next to use your remaining fiber.
Note: this experience requires “homework” outside of class times.

Not So Plain Weave
FS-031616 – Prairie Art
(For new weavers ready to experiment with color.)
Learn how to create the illusion of a complicated
design, when you use more than one color in a simple
two harness weave structure called “log cabin”. Each
participant chooses up to 4 colors in one cotton yarn to
create color effects through direct contrast, echoes, or
shades of the pattern, weaving one thread over and
under the next. Samplers can be used as framed pieces or crafted into
useful, small projects. Sources to purchase appropriate yarns will be
provided; participants will bring their chosen yarn to the second session.
