She has facilitated craft demonstrations and workshops, judged and competed in Handspun & Sheep-to-Shawl contests, co-coordinated spinner’s retreats, & co-founded the statewide network SWIFT (Spinners and Weavers of Indiana Fibers & Textiles.) For 12 years Peggy wrote the Spinner’s Connection for Spin-Off magazine. She holds an M.A. in Art from the University of Indianapolis, with a major in textiles & ceramics. “Part of the healing element of any activity is what takes place while doing it—the process of how we do the task and the meaning that we derive from doing it. Arts and crafts are my adult form of play—they are a pathway for me to create without fear. I can open my hands, mind and soul to what might happen in the next moment. Often the outcome is to witness a tangible, visible sign of my existence in the world as a unique human being. Spinning and weaving are wonderful ways to connect to the life-giving spirit within and without. Making paper and writing are other important forms of “therapy” for me—setting out on a journey to explore thoughts and feelings; to understand the meaning of my life in this time and space. Playing alone or with others can be a blessing when we freely give and take our discoveries in the process.”“ ~Peggy Coffey, hand spinner, weaver and papermaker 3 Weaving with Handspun Yarn FS-020916 – Prairie Art (For experienced spinners/must be able to spin a continuous yarn.) Do you wonder how to spin yarns that are to be woven on a loom? Participants construct a simple loom from mat board in order to plan setts for handspun weaving projects. You’ll explore and weave up 2-3 sample pieces of your handspun to bring to the second session, where we’ll plan to use the yarns in a project for a table loom. For the third session, bring enough handspun yardage to prepare a warp for a weaving project to complete on your own. Cost includes materials fee, handouts and some wool/blended fibers to sample. Note: this experience requires “homework” outside of class times.
