This has been a whirlwind year for us. Tiffany and I came to the Eastern Campus with little more than a passion to help students, support from College leadership and a grant to lead the way. Nearly 300 applications later, we have acquired a strong new team, offices and a new space to provide tutoring in the TLC. We have forged partnerships across the campus as well as with our sister programs at the Metro and West campuses, and maintain support from campus leadership and our fearless leader, Dr. JaNice Marshall. Our students have grown to trust us to support their success, and for that we are eternally grateful. Academic and other departments at the Eastern Campus have also shown their trust in TRIO SSS by referring students – thank you all! And thanks to our campus president, Dr. Thomson, who touts us as an Eastern Campus care team. I’d also like to thank Terry Hancox and Scott Trimmer for sharing space and technology with us to serve our students in the TLC. Shout outs to our Eastern Campus partners in the Counseling, Financial Aid, Environmental Health, Nursing, Massage Therapy, Student Success, Student Life, Degree in Three, Testing and Tutoring, Student Government, Women in Transition, Access, GED/ABLE, Student Affairs and Academic Affairs departments. Thank you for standing with us to ensure success for our students. Most of all, thanks to my AMAZING staff – Karly, Tiffany, Hasida and Kimberly! We have a few graduating students who we are proud to say will be transferring to continue their educational journeys. We’ll miss you, Davlon, Tyler and Maurice! We hope that you will join TRIO programs at your respective universities. Your accomplishments are what TRIO is all about. And kudos to Tyler for completing with a 4.0 GPA! I hope you all will remember to come back to see us, and your TRIO successors. Help us to instill in them the knowledge that TRIO works! P.S. Dr. May, thank you for helping to bring TRIO to the Eastern Campus. We will miss you. We wish you the best in the next steps of your journey! introduction to staff New Team Member - Kimberly Kattas Kimberly Kattas, Math/Science Instructional Assistant With more than five years of experience as a sciences tutor at the Metro Campus, Miss Kim joins the TRIO staff with the goal to help all of our students who struggle with chemistry and biology. You may find her with a knitting project on her lap just waiting for you to arrive, but don’t strike up a conversation about gardening or DIY projects or you’ll never get around to your tutoring! 2 TRiO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES TRiO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES congrats to our students Kudos to Our Students! Students are excited to have a larger, permanent area to study and utilize our TRIO tutors. The new space has computers, large desks and whiteboards, making it a perfect spot for studying and tutoring. One student says, “I love the new tutoring area. It is in a great location and I like having a place to study and get help whenever I need it.” The TLC tutoring space is for math, science and IT. English tutoring is available in our main office, ESS 1113, by appointment as shown below. What was difference? Was it the classes? Was it the tutors? Was it the students? Well, sometimes it’s just knowing how to get the most out of your tutoring session. Here are some tips to make sure you get the help you want. Bring your materials. Please bring along your class notes, tex t book, stud y guides, assigned homework problems, calculator and any thing else that might be useful. Don’t forget to have a pencil and paper. Try your homework or start your assignment. If you haven’t begun, how can you know what you have trouble with or what your questions are? Being prepared with specific questions helps you optimize the time you have with your tutor. Come early and regularly. For most students, tutoring is an ongoing process. Regular appointments help you keep up with material and avoid stressful (and unproductive) cram sessions. Start tutoring early in the semester before you fall behind - don’t wait until you’re failing to seek help. Block off the time. Schedule your tutoring sessions the same way you would any important appointment. Be ready to put your phone away and give your session your undivided attention. We know you have a busy life, and we want the time you spend with us to make a difference. Actively participate. You should be doing some of the talking. Ask questions, ask to have things repeated, tell the tutor to slow down, try to explain back to the tutor what you think you understand. The goal of the session is for you to be able to solve the problem or answer the question when the tutor is not there. You will learn more from doing than from just listening. Be patient – don’t give up! Tutoring sessions may feel uncomfortable at first. Many people are embarrassed when they need to reach out for help. Don’t be! This is what we are here for and we do NOT think you’re stupid. You may not feel like your first session was productive, but it is impor tant that you don't give up after just one session. Also, feel free to set tutoring sessions with different tutors to see if the dynamics change. Sometimes, all it takes is a different point of view or tutoring style. The more prepared you are, the more you will gain from your session! www.tri-c.edu/ssseast 5 CUYAHOGA COMMUNITY COLLEGE Transfer to TRiO by Hasida Weber and Tamera Hauser As you work toward completing your degree, you may be considering transferring to a four-year college or university in the state. If you would like to continue the support you have received from TRIO SSS East, consider transferring to one of the colleges below, which have TRIO Student Support Services programs of their own. If you were not there, you missed out on an opportunity to better yourself by getting a look at the university aspect of college. After arriving at the campus, we met with a counselor to discuss financial aid opportunities, tuition and the University of Toledo’s TRIO SSS program. On top of that, we had a delicious meal. After gaining more knowledge about the university’s resources, a student took us on a tour of their huge campus. Among other things, we got to see their gyms, library and student center. We heard a little bit more about what the University of Toledo has to offer. During the short visit, and after learning about the amazing college resources, I felt that I was at home. I felt that Toledo was the place where I could further my education. The atmosphere and the benefits met my qualifications. After being on campus, I knew it was the place that I wanted to be. If you are not a participant in the TRIO SSS program, I think it is an excellent idea for you to look into it. They have great tutoring centers and activities that anyone can participate in. Someday, I hope to be a proud graduate of the University of Toledo! 6 TRiO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES TRiO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES money page by Hasida Weber and Tamera Hauser How to Improve Your Finances 1. EAT CHEAP • Start with breakfast at home. This can keep you from being so hungry at lunch and enable you to have a lighter snack before you go home for dinner. It also makes for a lighter meal budget for the week. • Spending $6 a day on lunch can add up to $30 per week. That’s $1,560 a year! Even if it’s on your My Tri-C card, that’s a lot of money that doesn’t need to be spent. • Save money by packing your lunch before you come to school. Fast food and meals out can drain your bank account. You can purchase 20-30 bottles of water for less than $5 versus paying $2.50 for one bottle of water. An ice pack can keep it cold all day. 2. AVOID IMPULSE BUYS • When you have a fresh financial aid refund burning a hole in your pocket, it can be tempting to make impulse buys. Shop around for best buys instead. In many cases, you can order the same things online for much less money and get them in just a couple of days. • Small purchases add up. Shop with a list and try to stick with it. 3. EARN WHERE YOU LEARN • Never try to use financial aid for living expenses - instead, apply for a work-study position. In most cases, this will enable you to stay in the learning environment while earning money for your personal expenses. You can also learn more about the College and network with staff members who can be valuable sources of knowledge. • In the spring, apply for the Summer Internship program. It pays $10 per hour and covers tuition for one class and one book. 4. APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS • Scholarships can help to cover your college expenses and do not have to be repaid. Tri-C has several scholarships available. Check the website: http://www.tri-c.edu/paying-for-college/financial-aid-andscholarships/apply-for-scholarships.html. • There are hundreds of other scholarships available through College Now of Greater Cleveland. Review the scholarships at www.collegenowgc. Click on Find Scholarships. 5. AVOID TAKING OUT LOANS • Pell grants cover the cost of tuition at Tri-C for many students. Avoid borrowing money toward an associate degree or certificate if you don’t need to. There are loan limits that could affect your ability to transfer into a bachelor degree program or pursue a master’s degree. • Talk with your TRIO SSS advisor about how to manage the costs of your education. 6. DON’T LET TECHNOLOGY WRECK YOUR BUDGET • Cell phones have become very important to many of us. There is a wide range of functionality among cell phones. Decide which features are most important at this stage of your life. • Seek out cell phone plans that provide the features you need, not just those you want. There will be plenty of time to increase your technological capacity when you start your career. You may not need the most expensive service plan. Consider lowering your max minutes or storage space, if practical. 7. SAVE FOR EMERGENCIES • Car repairs, medical problems, job loss, broken computer – emergencies can and will happen. Are you prepared for them? Having cash put aside for emergencies will keep you from using your credit card or borrowing from friends and family. • Put aside as much as possible in your emergency fund. Remember all that money you are saving from the tips above? It will help you build your emergency fund quickly. www.tri-c.edu/ssseast 7 CUYAHOGA COMMUNITY COLLEGE featured TRIO program Veterans Upward Bound PREPARE. ADVANCE. ACHIEVE. Veterans Upward Bound is a TRIO program aimed at providing educational support for adults who have served our country as members of the United States military. Often, these men and women entered service immediately after high school, with little or no opportunity to attend college. These individuals have obtained a wealth of various life and career experiences that they utilize upon their return to civilian life. However, whether fresh out of the service or simply seeking a second career, many veterans recognize the need for additional credentials. These credentials usually require additional education. But many individuals, having been away from education for so long, feel ill-equipped to navigate the college process. They may not be certain what career field they wish to pursue, or they may feel too old and fear failure. Veterans Upward Bound offers the opportunity to begin the process with the support and camaraderie of instructors and fellow vets who understand what it is like to come back to college as an adult. Veterans are given the opportunity to attend refresher courses with other veterans in the program. Within this environment, students recognize the possibilities for their education. Students who complete the program find themselves ready to tackle their education so that they can attain the goals they have set for themselves.
