Optimal operation of your Sulfur
Recovery Unit (SRU) requires measurement and control of a complex sequence
of processes. Particularly important is
control of the reaction furnace temperature to prevent damage to the refractory
at high temperatures and ammonium
salt plugging the converters at low
temperatures.
Those installations that use the reaction furnace to incinerate waste gases
such as ammonia and hydrocarbons
must maintain an adequate temperature
to assure their destruction. Advanced
processes such as O2 enrichment
normally involve still higher temperatures and demand close monitoring.

Mikron E2T has designed the PULSAR
family of three detection systems for
continuous and instantaneous measurement of Refractory Temperature
(RT), Gas Temperature (GT) and

vessel away from the heat, vibration

PROVEN EXPERIENCE
For a quarter of a century the energy industry has used Mikron E2T pyrometers in sulfur reaction furnaces,
spent acid plants, CO boilers and sulfur burners. Mikron E2T listens when industry speaks, and when clients
asked us whether we could manufacture furnace temperature measurement systems with multiple capabilities, we accepted the challenge.

Industry wanted systems designed for air and higher temperature oxygen-enriched reactors instead of
generic thermometers with limited temperature spans of 1000°C. Mikron E2T increases the range of its
sulfur reactor models to 900°-3500°F (480°-1925°C).
Industry wanted a simple but rugged monitoring system with cooling capabilities able to
withstand continuous exposure to corrosive gases and temperature extremes. Mikron E2T
builds monitors with heavy-duty swing-out fixtures and cooling cavities.
Industry wanted an explosion-proof housing as standard without expensive X and Y purge additions.
Mikron E2T delivers CSA and CENELEC-certified IR Systems in Explosion-proof Housings
Industry wanted to visually see what the IR thermometer was measuring rather than guessing
on what you are focusing. Mikron E2T provides sight-through optics for viewport and furnace
viewing.

Industry wanted to easily clean the window and clear the viewport of debris during operations without
waiting for a shutdown to resume thermometer readings. Mikron E2T includes a removable viewport
window and a clean-out probe assembly.

depending upon dedicated thermocouples that burn out. Mikron E2T includes a thermocouple
probe assembly for verification and cure-out operations.

Installation Principles
LOCATION ON FURNACE
Utilization of the different temperature measurement systems depends upon the feed gases and burner
design of the reactor. If you burn simple acid gas with combustion air, the FF Integrated Total Temperature
System should be installed two-thirds of the way downstream from the burner to the waste heat boiler. If there
is a checker wall or choke ring, installation at Locations 2 and 3 are recommended. When you are using your
reactor to destroy ammonia and/or other gases such as BTEX, it is essential that destruction temperatures
be achieved. To assure incineration, the FF Integrated Total Temperature System or the GT Gas
Temperature System should be installed at Locations 2 and 3.

With oxygen-enrichment, refractory integrity becomes critically important. Burner design and location become
paramount in determining the placement of the IR thermometer. The RT Refractory Temperature System
should be installed aimed at the area where the designers anticipate the highest refractory temperatures. For
example, Location 1 is recommended for checker wall protection and Location 4 for tube sheet monitoring.
Temperatures at the tube sheet are especially critical since the ferrules and ceramic tube-to-metal junctions
may face potential excessive temperature excursions as a result of oxygen-enrichment operations.

The PULSAR Model M7000SR should be mounted on the horizontal diameter (no greater than +35°) perpendicular to the vessel sighting on refractory, or adjacent to the burner sighting on the checker wall or tube sheet.

The SOF-8 Swing-out Fixture mounts to a 3 inch 150 or 300 pound valve connected to the furnace via a spool
with purge connection. Minimum purge rates for downstream and viewport are 10 SCFM and 1 SCFM respectively. The PULSAR’s housing includes a cavity for water or vortex air cooling when ambient temperatures
exceed 125°F (50°C). Flex lines should be used for power input and signal output.
