Founded in 1986 by John A. “Archie” van Beuren and Hope H. “Happy” van Beuren, the van Beuren

Charitable Foundation has invested $67 million into its communities, guided by the principles of family involvement, firsthand knowledge of the community, and operating with integrity, intelligence, and imagination. This is our first year as a family philanthropy without John A. “Archie” van Beuren’s active participation. We miss his thoughtful perspective as a philanthropist and his deep knowledge of the greater Newport community. The principles that informed the creation of the Foundation are an important part of his legacy, and continue to guide the board and staff in their operations and grant making.

The $4.7 million investment in our 2014 Newport County grants portfolio reflects both the community’s and the Foundation’s aspirations: balancing vibrant growth with stewardship of natural and historic resources; excellence in education; and access to quality healthcare and healthy choices.

We are pleased to support collaborative efforts of organizations brought together by ambitious goals that no one organization could achieve on its own. While organizations test innovative approaches for meaningful change and plan for the future, they must also be sure their own foundations are strong.

To that end, we continue to support operational and governance improvements through our capacity building initiatives.

This year, we merged and enhanced our former program areas, Land Use & Conservation and

Historic Preservation, to create Landscapes & the Built Environment. This change will enable vBCF to evaluate and support programs and projects in a more integrated way, with an increased emphasis on supporting thoughtful design.

On behalf of the board and staff, we applaud the efforts of our community partners who act to improve the quality of life and quality of place for Newport County residents.

Landscapes & the Built Environment

Conserving and strengthening the extraordinary landscapes and built environments essential to Newport County’s physical and cultural character, and integrating those elements into the future development of the community.

Building upon the Foundation’s past investments in historic preservation, land use, and land conservation, the van Beuren Charitable Foundation introduced the Landscapes & the Built Environment program area in 2014, merging and enhancing its former program areas, Land Use & Conservation and Historic Preservation. By considering Landscapes & the Built Environment holistically, the Foundation hopes to help ensure the future of a vibrant, dynamic Newport County community.

Increasing the Capacity of Grantees

The van Beuren Charitable Foundation recognizes the challenges nonprofits face and provides resources to help these organizations navigate change and manage growth. Since 2009, vBCF has funded capacity building in the areas of financial management, human resources, governance, and coaching through a mix of training sessions and grants.

By evaluating and addressing limitations and potential, organizations can overcome obstacles and better use their capabilities to achieve success.

Grants

In 2014, vBCF provided support for eight organizations to continue their participation in an initiative designed to improve their strategic financial management practices. Fiscal Management Associates assessed the financial health and practices of participating organizations, recommended changes, and guided groups to implement their self-identified priorities. Peer learning groups reinforced team approaches to achieving better financial management.

Two organizations received support to work with Third Sector New England to assess their human resource practices, identifying strengths and weaknesses. This information will be a critical component in assisting these organizations to reach their goals.

Effective executives and board members understand the importance of third-party feedback in bolstering their leadership skills. The vBCF supported four organizations by providing results-driven coaching grants to enable leaders to identify areas of personal growth that would leverage positive change and growth for the organization.

Training Sessions

In addition to direct grants to nonprofit organizations, vBCF also provided training sessions to help organizations position themselves for success.

The Foundation partnered with BankNewport to have Fiscal Management

Associates provide a three-part training focused on strategic financial management to more than 25 staff and board members from ten organizations.

As a follow up to a session in 2013, this year vBCF sponsored a training session for executive directors led by Bill Ryan of Ryan Consulting and the

Harvard Kennedy School, focusing on their role in engaging board members as partners to identify and address issues facing their organizations.

As it has since its beginning, vBCF also supports the capacity of organizations through its annual grants and continues to welcome requests that strengthen organizations and enable them to thrive in an environment of constant change.
