Year 12 Level 2 PHYSICS Course outline 2011 Learning physics at Level 2 will involve you in investigating physical phenomena and developing concepts, principles and models to explain these phenomena. These concepts and principles are very important. You will also learn important procedures, problem solving strategies and decision-making techniques. As your skills and knowledge develop you will become increasingly aware of your own intellectual, academic and vocational potential. Your teachers will use “hands on” experiences and real, contextual examples as much as possible. They will help you to think as a professional physicist and learn their problem solving approaches. This course will help you meet the requirements of the New Zealand Physics Curriculum L2. On completing a course of study in Year 12 Physics (Level 7 Physics), you should be able to: 7.1 7.2 7.3 (a) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physical concepts, principles and models; (b) Apply concepts and principles to explain physical phenomena, systems and devices. (a) Describe how physics theories and models have been developed; (b) Explain how developments in physics-based applications can lead to changes in society. (a) Carry out practical investigations to determine relationships, patterns and trends in physics; (b) Carry out practical investigations to identify and explain applications of concepts and principles. 1 Carry out a practical physics investigation that leads to a non-linear mathematical relationship 91170 Demonstrate understanding of waves 91171 Demonstrate understanding of mechanics 91172 Demonstrate understanding of atomic and nuclear physics 91173 Demonstrate understanding of electricity and electromagnetism 2 PHET http://phet.colorado.edu/new/simulations/ Surendranaths: http://www.surendranath.org/Applets.html Hong Kong Physics Teacher Site: http://www.ngsir.netfirms.com/englishVersion.htm NZIP year 12 applet page: http://nzip.rsnz.org/es/applets/index.htm Lectures Online: http://lectureonline.cl.msu.edu/~mmp/applist/applets.htm Explore Learning: http://www.explorelearning.com/ Colorado Uni: http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/TOC.html Walter Fendt’s: http://www.walter-fendt.de/ph14e/ Florida State Uni – List of Light http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/lightandcolor/refractionhom Javas: e.html Florida State Uni – List of E-M http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/electromag/java/index.html Javas: NZ Government Study Site http://www.studyit.org.nz NZ Government Site for NCEA http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/assessment/ach/index.html – standards, old exams, etc Salford Uni: Wave material: http://www.acoustics.salford.ac.uk/feschools/waves/contents.htm McGraw Hill Textbook (US) http://highered.mcgrawapplets: hill.com/sites/0070524076/student_view0/interactives.html 3 SCOTS Year 12 Physics 2016 Course Calendar Week Term One (1/2 to 15/4) 1/2 3 Term Three (1/8 to 23/9) Term Four (10/10 to 7/12) 2/5 1/8 10/10 P2.4 Mechanics (91171) (1) Vectors 1 2 Term Two (2/5 to 8/7) P2.3 Waves (91170) (1) Nature of light (2) Curved mirrors 8/2 Waitangi Day ( Monday) (1) Continues (2) Forces 15/2 (3) Torque 9/5 22/2 23/5 4 29/2 16/5 (5) Voltage Divider (6) Electromagnetism 6/6 Queens Birthday (Mon/Tues) (7) Wave Properties 5/9 14/11 12/9 (6) Lenses 13/6 7 14/3 P2.4 Mechanics (91171) continues 2.1 Practice Practical #1 P2.1 Practical Investigation (91168) P2.1 Internally Assessed Term 2 Week 4 21/3 20/6 4/4 24/10 Labour Day (Mon) 31/10 6 10 REVISION 22/8 Founders’ Break (Mon/Tues) (7) Electromagnetic Forces Tournament Week 29/8 (8) Electromagnetic Induction (4) Total Internal Reflection P2.1 Internal Assessment (6) Projectiles 9 17/10 15/8 30/5 (7) Circular Motion Easter break (from Wednesday 28/3 to Tuesday) (8) Work, Power, Energy EXAMS (4) Combination Circuits (3) Refraction (5) Kinematics 7/3 8 8/8 (2) Continues 2.1 Practice Practical #3 (3) continues (4) Motion revision 5 (3) Electric Power/Energy (8) Wave fronts (9) Boundary Behaviour P2.5 Nuclear Physics (91173) (1) Models of the Atom 21/11 (2) Atomic Radiations (3) Radioactive Decay 19/9 (10) Wave Interference 27/6 P2.6 Electricity (91173) (1) Electric Fields 7/11 NCEA Exams Start (4) Fission and Fusion P2.5 Internal Assessment 28/11 Tuesday Senior School Prizegiving 5/12 Wednesday Middle School Prizegiving 4/7 (9) Momentum and Impulse 2.1 Practice Practical #2 (2) DC Circuits/Calculations 11/4 11 EOTC WEEK 4
