Introduction
Note
The Type SP87300 SAFE-T SHP9
Stirring Hot Plate is UL listed explosionproof for Class I, Division I, Group C
and D locations where flammable
gases or vapors are present in sufficient quantities to produce explosive or
ignitable mixtures. The Group C and D
classification specifies hazardous
atmospheres containing either flammable gases or vapors of flammable liquids (see NFPA 497 and NFPA 321).
Intended Use
The Type SP87300 SAFE-T SHP9 Stirring Hot
Plate is UL listed and has been designed to
meet OSHA and other safety standards. It is
used for procedures requiring temperatures
from 100°F (38°C) to 424°F (218°C).
The unit consists of 1) a heated aluminum
top plate, 2) an adjustable electronic temperature control and 3) an adjustable electronic stirring speed control. See Figure 1 for the shape
and general features of the unit.
General Usage
Do not use this product for anything other than
its intended usage.
Principles of Operation
The top plate is heated by a tubular heating
element cast into an aluminum top plate. The
temperature of the plate is controlled by a primary electronic feedback control. The primary
electronic control serves to limit the top plate
temperature under normal operating conditions. A secondary bimetallic thermostat is installed as a safety feature to control the temperature should the primary electronic control
fail. The secondary control will limit the top
plate temperature to 280°C (536°F). The stirring speed on a SAFE-T SHP9 is controlled by
an electronic control. The stirring motor located
in an explosion-proof enclosure is combined
with a powerful magnet to provide excellent
coupling with a stir bar. All control and
electrical connections are contained within the
aluminum explosion-proof enclosure. Temperature monitoring is provided by inserting a thermometer in the top plate well. (The thermometer is optional — part # MEX126.)
5
Note: Max Temp. is the Temp. at the center of top plate.
Installation
Caution
The wooden shipping support attached to
the bottom of the SAFE-T SHP9 stirring
hot plate must be removed prior to permanent field installation.
Caution
Minimum allowable spacing between
stirring hot plate and any vertical surface is one inch (2.54 cm).
Caution
To reduce the risk of fire or explosion,
do not install where the marked operating temperature exceeds the ignition
temperature of the hazardous atmosphere(s).
Warning
To avoid electrical shock this stirring hot
plate must be installed by a competent,
qualified electrician who is familiar with
installing explosion-proof electrical
equipment and ensures compatibility
among the stirring hot plate specifications, power source and grounding
requirements. Grounding requirements
for hazardous areas are specified in
Article 501 (and Article 250) of the
National Electrical Code. Consult local
electrical code requirements also. All
units are provided with an equipment
grounding lead that should be used as
the primary equipment ground connection for the unit.
Site Selection
Install the SAFE-T SHP9 Stirring Hot Plate on
a level, sturdy surface and allow space for ventilation.
The electrical specifications are located on
the back of the stirring hot plate. Consult customer service if your electrical service is different than that listed on the specification plate.
Your SAFE-T SHP9 Stirring Hot Plate is
designed for permanent installation. Permanent
installation is made possible with integral
mounting lugs and 1/2” (1.3 cm) conduit with
18” (45.7 cm) of lead wire provided.
Leads are factory sealed to meet the
requirements of Article 501 of the National
Electrical Codes (NEC). The SAFE-T SHP9
Stirring Hot Plate must be hardwired per NEC
(USA) or CEC (Canada) requirements.
An external switch or circuit breaker needs
to be included in the building installation in
close proximity of the unit as a means to disconnect supply circuit. Overcurrent protection
devices should be included in the installation.
The unit can be connected to a branch circuit
not exceeding 20 Amps.
The stirring hot plate installation must conform with installation requirements for electrical
equipment intended for use in Class I, Group C
and D hazardous locations as defined by the
NEC and electrical code requirements of your
area.

Operation
Warning
Due to the nature of this product,
operator safety will be endangered
should maintenance or servicing be
performed on it.
Caution
Maximum load of the top plate is
25 lbs. (11.3 kg).
Note
Accuracy of the dial thermometer
(part # MEX126) is ±3°C.
Caution
The aluminum top plate is easily
stained. Do not use a wire brush
to clean the unit. Using a wire
brush will modify the integrity of
the surface and it could affect your
heat stability. Wipe the top plate
with water only, using a lightly
dampened non-abrasive cloth.

Heating Specifications
Element Type: Cast-in Tubular Heating Element
Temperature range at the center of hotplate:
38°C - 218°C ± 3°C
Temperature cut-off:
235°C ± 9°C
Heat-up time to maximum temperature (218°C,
unloaded top plate): 16.5 minutes at nominal voltage
Temperature stability at center of top plate surface at 70°C: ±1°C
Temperature stability at center of top plate surface at 218°C: ±3°C

average hot plate temperature when the unit is
operating at 70°C: ± 3.5°C
Accuracy of the temperature indicated on the dial
thermometer (see note at left) (optional part) vs.
the average hot plate temperature when the unit
is operating at 218°C: ±10°C
Dial marks for heat control knob settings are for
reference only. The dial marks indicate approximate hot plate temperature in °C (±15°C).
Warning
To prevent ignition of hazardous atmospheres, the aluminum explosion-proof
enclosure chambers must be kept
closed (screws securely tightened)
whenever the unit is in operation and/or
connected to power supply circuit.
Hot Surface
“Caution: Hot Surface. Avoid Contact.”
The top plate will remain hot without
visual indication for some time after
the unit is turned off.
Warning
Temperature cycling over a temperature
range greater than 5°C with a period of
approximately 6 minutes may be observed
when operating the SAFE-T SHP9 at
220°C or higher. If such cycling is
observed, the unit is functioning under
abnormal or fault conditions and the secondary bimetallic thermostat is controlling
the top plate temperature. Under these circumstances, the unit should first be turned
off at both the heat and stir dial switches
and the external circuit breaker and
allowed to cool completely. Next, in an
atmosphere absolutely free of flammable
liquids, gases, and/or vapors, test the heat
control function of the SAFE-T SHP9 at
several temperature settings within the
range of 38°C to 220°C. If the top plate
temperature of the unit again cycles with a
period of approximately 6 minutes over a
temperature range greater than 5°C when
ramping to or operating at 220°C, return
the unit to the factory.
Warning
To prevent ignition of hazardous atmospheres, do not use electrical equipment
such as a thermocouple and pyrometer
to monitor the hot plate temperature
unless it is UL listed for the same hazardous atmospheres and temperature
rating as the SAFE-T SHP9. The thermocouple and pyrometer could serve
as a source of ignition.
OPERATION
Setting the Temperature
Dial (Control) Switch Turn clockwise to the
desired temperature. Dial marks indicate approximate surface temperature in °C. When the
temperature for a given dial setting has been
reached, the control will regulate the hot plate.
To turn OFF hot plate, turn dial switch fully
counterclockwise to the OFF position.
Use of Dial Thermometer
The optional dial thermometer (part # MEX126)
can be used to set and monitor the temperature of the aluminum top plate.
Heating Metal Vessels
Metal vessels may be heated safely on the
SAFE-T SHP9 without the danger of the vessel
reflecting enough heat back to the top to cause
the aluminum to soften. The electronic control
in the SAFE-T SHP9 will regulate the aluminum top plate temperature.
