Work Ethics Information: The Technical College System of Georgia instructs and evaluates students on work ethics in all programs of study. Ten work ethics traits have been identified and defined as essential for student success: appearance, attendance, attitude, character, communication, cooperation, organizational skills, productivity, respect, and teamwork. As a student in this Ogeechee Technical College course, you will be expected to adhere to the highest standards of these 10 character traits in your behavior as well as your coursework. Classroom Policies Dress Code: Ogeechee Technical College strives to train honest, hardworking professionals of good character in a secure environment. That is why appropriate dress and clear display of student ID is expected of every student. The current OTC dress code reads as follows: Dress requirements vary in classrooms, laboratory, and shop areas. Students enrolled in internships and clinical courses are required to dress appropriately according to the requirements of the work for which they are being trained. Student shall not dress, groom, wear, or use emblems, insignias, badges, or other symbols or lewd or vulgar words where the effect thereof is offensive to a reasonable person or otherwise causes disruption or interference with the orderly operations of the college. The supervising administrator shall determine if the particular mode of dress results in disruptions or interference. Student shall at all times observe rules governing body cleanliness and not wear short or tight shorts, swimsuits, tank tops, bare midriffs, or have bare feet. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner in the salon setting. A professional image is mandatory. A full uniform is required at all times. The required dress code is Ogeechee Tech Student ID, white lab coat, solid white shirt (no midriff), solid black scrubs or dress pants (no knits or sweats), solid black walking shoes (no canvas or open toe), and black socks or black hose. Undergarments must be natural, nude or white as not to be noticeable under white shirt. Exposed legs must be covered. No head wraps. You will not be permitted into class without a clean, proper uniform. Head wraps are not permitted. Student ID must be worn at all times at the left side of the uniform. Students’ hands must be properly groomed. Nail length Rev Fall 2013 4 (free edge) no longer than top of fingertip length. Neutral pale pink, flesh colored, transparent (clear) or French tip nail polish. Students who do not adhere to the dress code will be asked to leave the class immediately. Attendance: Attendance is extremely important for success in this course, you can only learn if you are present. Attendance will be checked at the start of each class period. To receive credit for this course a student must attend 90% of the scheduled instructional time. Any student attending less than 90% of the scheduled instructional time will receive a "W" for the course if removed from the course before 60% of the semester is up. After 60% of the semester any student who has maintained a passing grade within a course will receive a 'WP' for the course when attending less than 90% of the scheduled instructional time. If, however, the student has not maintained a passing grade, he or she will receive a 'WF' for the course. Attendance is counted from the first scheduled class meeting of each semester. Food and Drink: Food and beverages (other than water) are not allowed in classrooms/labs. Absences: A student is required to attend class 90% of the scheduled instruction time. A student may be absent a total of 6 days for Fall and Spring terms and 4 days for Summer term. Tardy means arriving after the scheduled time for instruction to begin. Early departure means leaving before the end of the scheduled instructional time. Three (3) tardies or early departures equal one (1) absence for the course involved. COSM/ESTH classes are taught in a block format. (For Example: COSM 1010 has 90 contact hours. So you can miss 9 hours total of COSM 1010 without being dropped from that class. Since each class is taught from start to finish before moving onto the next class, each hour must be accounted for. A student will work for 50 minutes and receive 10 minute break. If the student does not return to class after the ten minute break, they will be counted tardy for the next hour. Therefore, a student may receive more than 3 tardies in one day. This will help the student to achieve the required contact hours for each program class.) All work missed due to tardiness or absences must be made up at the convenience of the instructor. Provisions for instructional time missed because of documented absences due to jury duty, military duty, required job training, or official college activities will be made at the discretion of the instructor. Rev Fall 2013 5 There are no excused absences except those documented by a death certificate, written doctor’s report, arrest warrant etc. Students are responsible for all material covered when absent. Tardiness: Tardiness is disruptive, unfair to, and inconsiderate of others. It can develop into a bad habit that could ultimately cost you a job! If you come in late, it is your responsibility to see that your absence is changed to a tardy! Students who will be dropped from the class roll when your absences exceed 10% of the total class hours for the course. Three (3) tardies equal one (1) absence for the course involved. Tardy means arriving after the scheduled time for instruction to begin or departing before the end of the scheduled time. Leaving the class without the instructor’s permission will count as an early departure. If you need to leave the class for any reason, notify your instructor prior to leaving. Exams are scheduled well enough in advance so that adequate arrangements can be made if necessary. Arriving late on a scheduled test/exam day will not be tolerated. If you are late, you will not be allowed to test and will receive a grade of zero. Course Withdrawal: Students who withdraw from a course and have attended 60% or less of the course will receive a “W”. Students who withdraw from a course and have attended more than 60% of the course will be issued a “WF” if the student was failing or a “WP” if the student was passing upon withdrawing or being dropped from the course. Students may withdraw from a maximum three courses while enrolled at the college. Once a student has accumulated three “W” grades, he/she may elect to receive a “withdrawal failing” (WF) for the course or remain in the course. Please note WF is calculated as an “F” for GPA purposes. Some exceptions may apply I the even a student withdrawals for an acceptable hardship, medical, and/or military reason.
