COMMODORE’S REPORT
Mike Thomas
Hello readers.
Annual General Meeting:
First of all, at our last board meeting, your Executive set the date for our upcoming Annual General Meeting. The date is Tuesday, October 28th. which is
roughly a month sooner than previous AGM's. If you attended this annual meeting
last year, you will likely remember that the voters approved a change in the date
of our fiscal year end from the end of October to the end of September. According
to our By-laws, the Annual General Meeting must be held no later than November
30 each year which means that the AGM can be held on October 28. The thinking
behind this change, is that we are now able to hold this important meeting before many of our members would normally leave for warmer destinations. Now, many of these folks are able to attend, vote and be a part of the decisions
which will be made which govern the management and future of our Club. Please do your best to attend.
Sail Boat:
We recently purchased a 14 foot sail boat for the use of any of our members who would like to try sailing. I know some
of you are power boaters, but if you have a secret desire to try sailing, you are welcome to sign out this boat and give it
a try.[We promise not to tell anyone that you did]. The boat is naturally available to any of our members who would
like to take their children and grand children out for a sail and expose them to the joys of sailing at a level they can understand. If you prefer, we can find a qualified sailor to take you out. We are looking to acquire a few more such boats
with the possible development of a junior sailing fleet.
Automated External Heart Defibrillator:
We extend our sincere thanks to members Annette and Vick Romaszewski for their extreme generosity as well as the
funds contributed by our Captains Care Club. Thanks to them, we have two Automated External Heart Defibrillators
available to treat situations resulting in possible cardiac arrest. Also thanks to member Ciy Young who has volunteered
to coordinate the basic training required to render treatment with these life saving devices. Anyone at our Club who
experiences a life threatening cardiac event will now have a better chance of survival while waiting for the arrival of
Paramedic intervention.
Pig Roast: Our recent annual pig roast was a resounding, sold-out success as always and we are very grateful for the
many visitors from our neighbouring clubs to the South, our members, volunteers and staff whose selfless dedication
guaranteed the event's success. [The names of these wonderful people will be disclosed by some of the other submissions in this issue] By the way, we should also thank Past Commodore Bob McElroy whose decision it was to hold the
first ever pig roast back in 1992. So here it is 2014 and this event has become a tradition which dates back 22 years.
That's what we call successful event!!
Here we are in the month of September and while the afternoons are still warm and the evenings are cool, we know
that our boating season is winding down. There will not be a Fall clean-up but we will soon be announcing the date for
boat lift day as well as the date when we turn off the water to the docks in preparation for winter. Meanwhile, we have
decided on dates for a special Thanksgiving Dinner and even though Halloween falls on October 31st which coincides
with our usual steak and salmon Friday, if will be all the more enjoyable with Boogie Nights providing the dance music
and costumes are encouraged. I am sure Corinne and Carol have some ideas for some additional menu items which
will be announced shortly. We should also watch for the date of the Sailors Wind-up Party.
That's it for now. Be sure to enjoy the fine weather as long as possible and we hope to see many of you at the Club.
Regards,
Mike Thomas, Commodore.

VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT
Ron Heuman
Wow! September is such a beautiful month, lovely water conditions
and breathable air. Such is the
beauty of the four seasons.
I
never understand why folks like to
leave such a paradise, and miss the
VYC fall/winter fun activities!
As the 2013-2014 Executive year
ends with the AGM, I must say it
has been a pleasure to serve on the
VYC Executive these past two
years. This year has been very rewarding working with the Long
Term Planning Committee. Notably we put forward a timely and
comprehensive document which is
greatly assisting the Executive to
develop a new budget based on
ideas put forward by the VYC membership. Also, I am pleased to say
that I have served the Club for 5
years on the Executive as well contributing on other committees during my 19 years of membership. In
that regard, I would like to express
my thanks to fellow VYC Executive
Members and all members in general for your continual encouragement and support. Most Fun!

Regular VYC Members to serve on
the 2014/2015 Executive Committee. The Club has realised significant Clubhouse upgrades this past
season and now must find leadership in improving our marina, specifically the breakwater and ‘C’
Dock. Please consider letting your

REAR COMMODORE’S REPORT
Craig Williams
As the end of the 2014 boating season draws closer and you’re making mental list
of all you have to do to put your boat away for yet another winter, please note
that the water on the docks and the sanitary pump-out will be available only until
Sunday October 19, 2014, after which both will be shut down.
Please be sure to disconnect and drain your water hoses to avoid damage from freezing to both the water spigot and your hose and to make it easier and faster for Ed Kinnear and Ken Smith while they are
blowing out the water lines. The VYC does not assume any responsibility for damage to your personal
water hoses.
Work for the year on the log breakwater is now complete with a total of 5 sections having had new cedar logs added to replace the worst of the old fir logs increasing floatation and then rebundled with
new cables to hold them more securely together. There is still work to do on this breakwater but that
will wait until after our upcoming AGM to be held Tuesday October 28, 2014 we will be seeking direction from the Membership about replacing the west floating concrete breakwater, so be sure to attend
and provide your input.
Repairs continue on the damage done to our floating concrete breakwater by the wind storm of July
19th, our Invasion weekend, reinforcing the need to make it a priority to replace this existing structure.
Thanks to the volunteer efforts of Members Ed Kinnear, John Bennett and Dwayne Blaeser on Saturday
September 20th, the last of our 37 mooring buoys have now been inspected for the year. Two of the 5
buoys at Fintry north had to have their anchor chains replaced as did 2 of the 6 buoys at Forestry, one
of which had to be retrieved from the beach after breaking free from the old chain being worn too thin.
It is imperative that these buoys are inspected annually to ensure their viability for safety reasons and
to reduce our liability exposure as a Club. I have heard some Club’s have been spending in excess of
$500 per buoy per year to have their buoys inspected and maintained by a commercial service, whereas
it costs us less than $50 per buoy each year thanks to the volunteer efforts of a small group of dedicated Members and our Club boat.
Every spring work begins all over again inspecting each one of our buoys and replacing anchor chains
and shackles where necessary. If you’ve never done so, please consider putting your name forward to
help out even for just one Saturday to help out whether you dive or not, extra hands are also needed
on the surface.
Keep and eye out for the start of some long overdue improvements to “C” Dock later this year.

Rib Off Repo
The Rib- Off / AED fund raiser, was a great success. Thanks to the members
that donated items for the silent auction, as well as the Master Chefs that
turned out a feast second to none. We had over 100 people attend, and had
a great turn out from our neighbors from KYC, SYC, and PLYC.
We would like to thank the following people for their donations:

And also from our staff, Marnie Williamson, and Jay Langton.
The night started off with the Chefs, cooking their ribs on the BBQ, at a fantastic rate, they were heckling each
other on, and maybe a few swear words may have been brought forward. After the great meal was devoured, which
included Katie Montguires homemade bake beans, and Angela Romaszewski;s homemade deserts, the Judges sat
down and analyzed the Ribs. The outcome was a tie. After last year, the females won, and I guess they still retain the
title., but all the Chef`s got a Master Chef Apron. Chef`s Susan Mathews, Cynthia Fox, Gerry Gautreau, and Gerald
Gustafson, along with their Sous Chef's Dennis Dobie, Pam Story, Cheryl Gautreau, and Annie Gustafson. Then the
special live entertainment hit the stage. Ron Spence from KYC, Norm Enns, Lawrence Johnson, along with Lawrence's
friend Blair from Penticton, entertained the group until the lights were dimmed. Fantastic music guys!
There was one big surprise. Vic and Annette Romaszewski announced
that they would be donating a defibrillator to the Club, so VYC will have
two AED's,(Thanks to Ciy Young's research and recommendations); one
for the clubhouse and one for the docks. Thank you Vic and Annette!

Please be mindful of your speed coming and going from the VYC basin. For
the safety of the members coming and going from their slips and protection
of the boats that are effected by the wake please slow to a crawl. The
extra minute it will take to get in or out of the basin could be the deciding
factor in the enjoyment of a fellow member visiting the docks.

MINUTES SUMMARY
~Pamela Miller~
It’s been a super busy summer with the latest “Pig Roast” event topping it off. There were 12 guest boats according to
our Fleet Captain Al Cuttriss who thanked Rex Landis (House & Grounds), Norm Bryan (Membership) and Ken Smith
(Maintenance) for their help. There was a mysterious incident surrounding dowsing the Barbeque flames, there is now a
new Pig Roast Bbq hood in the works and there are still some snazzy $10 Pig Roast T-shirts for those who missed one.
Our 2014 AGM will feature reports from all our Executive Members on the many items accomplished in 2014. It has been
exceptional working with this board. I really enjoy the variety, the skill level, the comradery and experiencing how each
member participates in brainstorming to come up with solutions to our numerous challenges and projects.
2014 saw more events than recent years with Debbra Butler (Public Relations) and Karol King (Staff Captain) adding a series of Ladies Nights that attracted many of Vernon’s ladies and businesses that had never been to the Club. Their expertise and presence added so much to our board and the Club events and I appreciate these two immensely.
Our Commodore, Mike Thomas, led this team with respect, eloquence and wisdom and was always thoughtful of others…
especially when meetings went on a bit and we starting getting thirsty. Cheers and thank you Mike!
Vice Commodore, Ron Heuman and a few very committed members implemented the Long Term Planning Committee
and I admire Ron for always choosing the at times arduous but necessary projects most people would not take on.
Pat Lett, our Treasurer makes things happen and explains how with reason and precision. If we’re stuck on a decision he
knows our way out.
Craig Williams, VYC Rear Commodore, is prepared, organized and knows more than most of us yet always takes the time
to hear all input before weighing in. Being a sailor too, I have the privilege of seeing Craig more often than other executives.
Our Fleet Captain, Al Cuttriss, is the go-to guy for all things regarding moorage and boating; he’s fair, excellent and runs a
tight ship.
Norm Bryan our Membership Director is keeping excellent track of incoming members and Larry Gilchuk (Docks Director)
is keeping our docks and breakwater maintained while keeping the executive entertained. Thanks for the fun Larry!
Rex Landis is our newest Director assigned to House and Grounds and he has accomplished tonnes in his short time with
us. You will soon see new flooring on the lower level and he is in charge of the barbeque upgrades to name a few.
Gerald Gustafson our Entertainment Director was behind the huge success of the “Pig Roast” and is the person to contact
if you’d like one of those spunky T-shirts! Thank you to all the great staff and volunteers at VYC and thank you Rebecca
for publishing this Tiller Topics for us.
Between racing sailboats out of Kelowna and long work days I have not made it to my Club very much this year yet when I
do the atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff and volunteers do such a great job! I would also like to thank Terry
Rudersdorfer for his expertise, help and support transitioning to the new website. I couldn’t have done it without you.
My 2014 highlight was helming the Women’s Race night series for the first time and helming a boat at the Women’s Regatta against our Vernon Yacht Club 1st Place boat, Carol Craske & crew on “Captivator”! Thank you all for a fun year!

First off, Gerald and Annie Gustafson
with their buds Jerry and Cheryl Gautreau pulled off a porky Pig Roast second to none. We think it was the fire
