The renovations are nearly completed. We have just a very short list of minor jobs to complete. Hopefully everything will be finished before our grand opening to the members on May the 1st. Please make sure to call Kathy at the office to RSVP. I am so much looking forward to getting the club back into full swing especially now with the recent upgrades. I am very pleased to say that we have had quite a few new members join since the renovation took place. In fact, as I write this report I was just informed another 8 families are seriously interested in becoming members. Along with that we are receiving a ton of interest in renting the newly renovated facility. This is very exciting news for our club to say the least! Commodore’s Report stayed within budget even though we had a few surprises along the way. Thank you Marilyn and PDS for dealing with the renovation process in a timely and efficient manner. We are about to officially start the summer season at the club. I have never been more excited about enjoying it with you, the members who made this upgrade possible. Constant and continuous improvement to our club is becoming a huge reality day-by-day and year-by-year. It is with this philosophy we will continue to grow and succeed as always intended. The best Club on the lake! We are still looking for Volunteers to take on specific roles for the summer season. If you or know anyone interested in filling some of the positions listed below please call Kathy at the office. Please note. The Pendozi log will be sent out quarterly from now on. Weekly notifications will be sent by email. Positions we require to fill: •Anchor club lead •Entertainment director •Director at large with interest of filling the Staff captain role. I look forward to seeing you at our grand opening May 1st RSVP required. Martin Gerard COMMODORE I would like to thank Brian Jaimeson and John Hudson for overseeing and dealing with the day-to-day office duties the last few months. It was a great relief to be able to just focus on the renovation committee and deal with some personal matters that needed my attention. Thank you both so very much. I and the rest of the West Kelowna Yacht Club members hope that you enjoy your experiences at the WKYC both on the lake and in our newly renovated Pendozi club house. It is looking like a great boating season coming up with all the excitement of fresh new members with fresh new ideas on how to make the club even more fun. As a volunteer club and a nonprofit organization we all chip in to get things done and to make events a ‘must attend’ function. A good example of this is how Paul Ouimet and Holly jumped into the organization of Lobster Night last year. My wife Sandie and I had been involved with this event for the past 10 years and finally turned it over to Paul. Paul and Holly brought in new ideas such as the “Screeching In Ceremony”! What a hoot! They built on previous ideas and made the evening a really fun experience for all who attended. I look forward to the participation of both past and new members during the year. Speaking of participation! A huge thank you is due Marilyn Hogan for her management of the Pendozi renovations. Marilyn contributed literally hundreds of hours in researching materials, finding the best deals on purchases and managing the contractors’ efforts in transforming the club house. There were times when we encountered problems and hard decisions had to be made but she persevered to the end to help ensure that we got what we wanted at a reasonable cost. Thanks very much Marilyn! I also want to thank Paul Davis Systems of Okanagan (PDS) who were able to organize and plan the renovations for a very reasonable price. A lot of you will soon be putting your boats in your assigned slips. As you might be aware the lake is close to its lowest level at this time of year. Please be careful when using either the WKYC boat launch or the public boat launch as the low water level may make the process more challenging. Also I remind everyone to properly secure their boat in their assigned slips. Please ensure that your boat has all of the required safety equipment when launching it. If you are unsure what safety equipment is needed for your size of boat; ask one of your executive and we will see that you find the information. Our Grand Opening of the Pendozi is scheduled for Thursday May 1st, 2014 and is an RSVP event. I hope to see you all there to experience the renovations made to your club house. John Hudson PAST COMMODORE PAGE 5 PENDOZI LOG W E S T K E L OW NA YAC H T C LU B Harbour Master’s Report A nother boating Season is upon us! Its been a long winter and I’m sure excited to start spending time on the water again. There has been a very large amount of changes in the basin this year. I started with 24 empty slips this year of various sizes and a move list of around 20 boats. At this time everyone on the wait list that wants a slip will have one, and almost the entire move list has been satisfied as well. All the changes will likely need some fine tuning as you put your boats in. PAGE 6 There will likely be a few needed changes as we go, I ask for your patience with this. Between all the moves and placements I have about 35 boats going into slips they have not been in before and do expect some suitability issues. As always, there is a need for larger slips and this will result in further changes as the season approaches, we are in a scenario right now where we have no room for larger boats but have a few slips available for under 24 foot, I am still trying to find solutions for this. This would be a good time to remind everyone that all efforts will be made to keep all members in slips that are favoured by them, but I am also tasked with trying to get all the boats I can into slips as that is to the benefit of the club and all its members. If you haven’t heard from me or Kathy yet about your slip assignment, send me an email and I’ll let you know what is going on with your slip. I do work full time so email is best to get a hold of me or if you need to phone the evening would be preferred. See you on the water! TECH TIPS FROM THE REAR COMMODORES T here is sometimes confusion concerning corrosion on boats, often incorrectly referred to as electrolysis, when in fact it is caused by galvanic corrosion or stray current corrosion. Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are electrically connected and immersed in an electrolyte such as sea water or fresh water, which then forms a battery. The least noble metal1 acts as an anode and gives off electrons which have the effect of corroding the metal. That is why it is very important to check protection is to install an isolation transformer on the boat; they are usually heavy and expensive. A diode isolator mounted in the boat in series with the shore power ground is a better choice. your zinc anodes carefully and change them regularly. Zinc is not the preferred metal in fresh water, aluminium alloys or magnesium is preferred. Stray current corrosion is similar but relies on the common ground wire in the shore power to connect boats in the same marina. If any boat has DC (direct current) leaking to ground – i.e.: bilge pump wiring – it will cause current to flow and corrode the metal on adjacent boats. To protect your boat from this occurrence an isolator can be installed on the ground wire of the shore power to block DC voltage. Another alternative We hope this brief synopsis will provide correct information for all boaters. (Endnotes) 1 What Are the Noble Metals? The noble metals are a group of metals that resist oxidation and corrosion in moist air. They are the opposite of the base metals, which more readily oxidize and corrode.
