LETTER FROM CHARLES & TED
Dear Friends –
The War Memorial continues to evolve as a living, breathing ecosystem whose primary purpose
is to make life better for our community. As we welcome the spring weather and emerge from our
wintry cocoons, the War Memorial has been working hard to develop innovative new programs,
to build bridges throughout our community, and to chart our long-range plan for a sustainable,
relevant and exciting institution. All of this you will see in the pages ahead.
Thanks to the Community Foundation For Southeast Michigan, the Board, staff and community
have been strategically defining our future, asking important questions and building consensus
towards a bright and better War Memorial. Now it’s your turn! We are asking for your help by
completing our community survey found at www.warmemorial.org. Your input, thoughts and
suggestions are critical to our organizational algorithm – as we are listening, we are reacting and
we are transforming ourselves based upon your input. Thank you in advance for your help!
As you may recall, last year was our very first Memorial Week. We are happy to once again
announce the continuance of this mission-driven work, perhaps our most important time of
the year. This year we begin Memorial Week 2016 with our Day of Service, followed by Our
Community Salutes Ceremony, where young men and women from our region will begin their
military career on the back steps of the historic Alger house. Our week will continue with the
popular Evening of Red, White and Blue, raising funds for the War Memorial Patriot Initiative,
followed by a special ceremony that will return a fallen warrior from the Korean War to his family
the following morning. The week will conclude with our always moving Memorial Day Service on
the waterfront of the War Memorial, remembering and centering on those who gave the ultimate
sacrifice. We invite you to join us and learn more about how you can become involved.
We are also excited to announce the continuation of SummerFest 2016! Thanks to our title
Sponsor, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the War Memorial will once again offer nine nights
of movies, arts and entertainment for three consecutive weeks in July – all for free. For more
information, please check out our website.
Lastly, it is important to note that the War Memorial is made up of a family of caring and
compassionate volunteer leaders and dedicated staff. Ted and I are continually amazed by the
selflessness that we witness in our governance and staff – always putting the War Memorial first.
We are humbled to partner with such a wonderful community of people. Thank you all for your
continued support. And, thank you, our community, for your attendance and advocacy of our very
special War Memorial.

GROSSE POINTE WAR MEMORIAL
CELEBRATES MEMORIAL WEEK
One day isn’t enough for us! Once again, we’re taking a whole week to honor our veterans, military
service members and their families with events, activities and special programs leading up to
Memorial Day 2016.
Day of Service
Friday, May 20
An Evening of Red, White &
Blue – Thursday, May 26
Memorial Day Service
May 30, 9:45 a.m.
Employees and the Board of Directors
of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial
volunteer their time to work with
organizations that support the military
and their families — we’re giving back to
those who gave so much.
A truly memorable gala where we honor
our heroes and raise funds in support
of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial’s
Patriot Initiative, which funds impactful
organizations focused on patriotism,
honoring and serving Veteran causes.
Patrons will enjoy an elite evening of
exquisite dining in our beautiful lakefront
ballroom. The evening will include a
presentation of two awards to special
members of our community. The Spirit
of Service Award honors an outstanding
member of the service who exemplifies
the word “patriotism” – one who has
the character or passion of a patriot:
devotion, support, and defense of country.
The Spirit of the Community Award
was established to honor those that best
reflect the Grosse Pointe War Memorial
through their dedication and commitment
to honor veterans and our mission.
Our week of service and honor
culminates in our traditional Memorial
Day Service. This moving ceremony
takes place on the back lawn of the
Grosse Pointe War Memorial as we
honor and remember those who have
given the ultimate sacrifice in service
to our country. It is open to the public
and attended by hundreds of members
of the community. The event includes a
prominent speaker, reading the names of
the fallen soldiers followed by the tolling
of the bell and rifle salute.
Our Community Salutes –
Tuesday, May 24
Our Community Salutes (OCS) is a
national, non-profit organization created
to recognize and honor graduating high
school students who are enlisting in the
armed services after graduation. We will
be honoring these courageous young
men and women from the Metro Detroit
area as they take the oath of office,
administered by a high-ranking military
official on the back lawn of the GP War
Memorial as their proud families look on.

GROSSE POINTE GARDEN CENTER
Gardening has always been an important part
of the estate at 32 Lake Shore Dr. The natural
setting surrounding the Alger home, The
Moorings, was one of extraordinary beauty, and
Marion Alger took care that the scenery that
she created was just as lovely.
“My mother was an ardent gardener and her
gardens spoke of her infinite knowledge of
what was right for the right place,” daughter,
Josephine, wrote in a letter to the War
Memorial docents. “The garden became as one
with the lifestyle of the house.”

The Garden Center was actually formed as the
successor to the War Memorial’s Grounds and
Gardens Committee and has a strong tie to the
Alger heritage. “Our office has been at the
Alger House during our entire existence, for
many years in what was Mrs. Alger’s bedroom,”
Heller said. “Since 1952 we have organized
and maintained the Trial Gardens on the back
lawn which are an important part of the War
Memorial grounds for visitors, patrons, and
summertime brides.”
This is the unique legacy and mission of the
Grosse Pointe Garden Center, which calls the

MESSAGE FROM INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
of our funding comes from people in this community – people
who understand the value of a strong community center that
provides exceptional experiences for learning, entertainment
and celebration.
Generations of families have passed through our doors to
share memories, celebrate good times, participate in the arts,
enrich their minds, and show their support through veteran and
patriotic activities. It goes without saying: the Grosse Pointe War
Memorial has truly touched the lives of every one of us.
Thanks to your support we have been able to honor hundreds of
veterans during Memorial Week, on Veterans Day, and during
1,000 Christmas Salutes. More than 1,000 people attend our
Brunch with Santa and Mother’s Day Brunch, and more than
2,000 people were captivated by song, music, dance and movies
at our free, three-week long SummerFest. These are just a few
of the ways we touch our community and all this is possible only
because of your generosity.
That is why we want to thank you, our friends, and members of
our community, for all your generous contributions. None of this
would be possible without your overwhelming support.

The Grosse Pointe War Memorial has celebrated more than 65
years of providing service to our community - and with your help
we will be here for another 65 years, because your contributions
are not only an investment in the War Memorial; they are an
investment in your community.
The War Memorial would not be a strong community institution
without your support. Each and every gift is important to us,
and each gift is used to support our activities, to honor veterans
and to maintain our beautiful historic building. There are many
ways you can help us keep this historic building alive and bring
the best in lifelong learning to Grosse Pointe. I hope that after
reading our magazine and learning about all the War Memorial
does, you will consider a gift to ensure that our future will be as
bright as our past.

individual donations are to the War Memorial. More than 92%

SIGNATURE SERIES
From the Director
This second season of Arts at the
Alger has an exciting spring lineup of
concerts. This fall and winter we really
brought an abundance of critically
acclaimed performing artists to our
Signature Series, and we’re going to
close the season on a very high note.
We’ve diversified our programming by
including everything from chamber
music to full symphony orchestras, and
in-depth lectures to magic shows to upand-coming opera stars. We are working
hard to ensure that the 2016 – 2017
concert series brings an even greater
variety of outstanding artists to the War
Memorial and will be soon announcing
the lineup.
We are very excited to continue the
energy from Arts at the Alger to the War
Memorial’s summer festival with outdoor
performances from a few of our longstanding favorites and some new artists.
I am pleased to announce that Dave
Bennett and Air Margaritaville will
return to SummerFest along with the
Michigan Opera Theatre, Shakespeare
Royal Oak, and the first ever War
Memorial performance from Detroit’s
premiere dance and Motown band,
Mainstreet Soul.
I look forward to seeing you at these
many coming spring concerts and then
again during the last three weeks of July
for SummerFest!
