Northern Ireland’s most significant
tourist destinations.
It gives me great pleasure, as
chairman of Moyle District Council,
to introduce the first edition of the
Moyle Economic Profile and Trade
directory.
The Moyle district has been blessed
with one of the most dramatic
coastlines on the Island of Ireland,
which has, for generations,
attracted and inspired visitors from
all over the world. Sites of interest
such as the breathtaking Carrick-aRede Rope Bridge, the beautiful
and tranquil Glens of Antrim and
the
world
famous
Giant’s
Causeway, have guaranteed the
district’s position as one of
The story, however, does not end
there. The past two decades have
witnessed a steady rise in the
district’s population. Our growing
population, and the increasing
popularity of the district as a tourist
destination, has contributed to the
development of a more dynamic
commercial environment, as local
businesses have responded to new
opportunities.
The Moyle Economic Profile and
Trade Directory is a celebration of
the diversity and quality of the
business and economic life of our
district. Its purpose is to act as a
comprehensive
information
resource for existing businesses
and potential investors who are
keen to learn more about Moyle and
the opportunities it can offer.
For ease of use, this publication has
been divided into two key sections.
Section One provides a socioeconomic profile of Moyle, which
presents relevant statistical data on
the district in a precise, interesting
and informative manner. Section
Two, the business directory itself,
provides a comprehensive current
listing of over five hundred
businesses operating in the district,
across all key industrial and
consumer sectors, and categorised
by sector.
Also included, are
relevant contact details for
government organisations, utility
companies and business support
agencies on both a local and
regional level. I am also pleased to
say that an on-line interactive
version of the directory is available
on-line at www.moyle-council.org
I hope you will find this publication
to be both helpful and interesting
and that it becomes an invaluable
information resource that you
return to time after time.

Moyle District Council
Moyle District Council is one of 26
local authorities in Northern
Ireland established by Act of
Parliament in 1973.
The council serves a population of
just under 16,000 and sees its key
mission as: "To provide democratic
leadership for the people of the
District and to ensure the delivery
of efficient and effective services for
all of its customers".
The roles and functions of the
Council fall into three types:
■ A direct role - in which the
council is responsible for the
direct delivery of certain
services. These include: Leisure
& Recreation, Refuse Disposal
and Collection, Tourism,
Economic Development,
Community Relations,
Community Services, Harbours,
Burial Grounds, and Regulatory
Services such as
Environmental Health and
Building Control.
■ A representative role - where
it's nominees sit as
representatives on various
other statutory bodies such as
the North Eastern Education &
Library Board, the Housing

Health & Social Services
Council.
A consultative role - through
which the council reflects the
views of the community on the
operation of certain regional
services including Roads, Water
and Planning.
Residents of the district are
represented by 15 Councillors, who
are elected every four years by a
system
of
Proportional
Representation. In June 2003, the
political composition of the Council
was as follows:

Moyle
District,
with
its
administrative headquarters in the
seaside town of Ballycastle, lies in
the North-East corner of Northern
Ireland. It includes 42 miles of the
breathtakingly beautiful North
Antrim coastline, including the
Giant’s Causeway, and derives its
name from "The Straits of Moyle", a
local name for the North Channel,
the narrow stretch of sea between
the Antrim coast and Scotland. The
district is unique in that it includes
Northern Ireland’s only inhabited
offshore island – Rathlin. The
area’s best known international
export is the world famous
Bushmills Whiskey.
Whilst the Moyle district is largely
rural in character (covering 190
square miles and with a resident
population of 15,933), it is within a
25-mile radius of some of Northern
Ireland’s principal towns –
Ballymena, Coleraine and Larne.
This gives the district a further

Population Age Profile
The district’s age structure is very
similar to the Northern Ireland
average, where a higher than
average birth rate has meant that
the population has not aged to the
same extent as other regions.
However, this birth rate has slowed
down, resulting in the proportion of
children in the local population
decreasing, and leading to
increases in the proportion of
people of working age (Table 2).

past twenty years, from 14,396 in
1981 to some 15,933 in 2001 (Table 1).

Services play a vital role in the local

a third of all local employment, the
district is particularly strong in

This strength in services is best illustrated by the Hotel and Catering sector (table 5), where more than twice the
number of people work in this sector than the Northern Ireland average. This reflects Moyle’s status as a key
tourist designation in Northern Ireland, which is due principally to the fact that it has such outstanding assets as
the Giant’s Causeway, the Glens of Antrim, Rathlin Island and Bushmills Distillery.
From a retailing perspective, the towns of Ballycastle, Bushmills and Cushendall are traditional market towns
typified by attractive shopping areas which contain a range of independent, specialist shops. These contrast with,
and complement, the neighbouring provincial towns of Ballymena and Coleraine, with their many high street
multiples.
Whilst manufacturing plays a fairly minor role in the district, the construction sector is very well represented, with
employment levels almost twice the Northern Ireland average.
Agriculture continues to play an important role in the economic life of the district. This sector accounts for just over
half (53%) of the 735 VAT registered enterprises in the district and provides full and part-time employment for
some 1,266 people (Census of Agriculture, 2001).
The district’s agricultural sector is complemented by a vibrant agri-food sector where a variety of key food and
drinks processors such as Bushmills Whiskey, Glens of Antrim Potatoes and Glens of Antrim Spring Water have a
presence in the district.

Whilst the Moyle district has
historically recorded higher than
average unemployment rates, the
past four years has seen a dramatic
convergence to the Northern
Ireland average, with figures in
April 1999 of 13.9% dropping to
3.6% by April 2003 (Table 7)
Moyle is serviced by four secondary
schools within the district and a
range of renowned grammar
schools in the neighbouring towns
of Ballymena, Coleraine, Larne and
Portstewart. Such high levels of
provision have resulted in an overall
standard of education that is above
the Northern Ireland average.

This decrease can be explained by
the fact that the number of
available jobs within the district has
actually increased significantly over
the past ten years. Since 1993,
Moyle has experienced a 20%
increase in the number of available
jobs. Much of this job creation has
arisen from opportunities within
the district’s service sector
(primarily retail and leisure) and
construction sector.

There is a broad range of
statutory

provision available in Moyle,
with a number of locally
based organisations offering
vocational training across a
wide range of business and
industrial disciplines.
Transport and Access
The Moyle District Council
area is situated in the North-
East corner of Northern Ireland and
is located just 14 miles from the
coast of Scotland.
Ferry services operate from
Ballycastle to Rathlin Island and
moves are afoot to introduce a
direct daily roll-on-roll-off ferry link
between
Ballycastle
and
Campbelltown on the Mull of
Kintyre in Scotland.
Ballycastle is within a 25-mile
radius of some of Northern
Ireland’s principal towns –
Ballymena, Coleraine and Larne
and is just over an hours drive from
Belfast.

Tourism
House prices in the Moyle/North Coast area, like elsewhere in Northern
Ireland, have performed well in recent years. The average 2002 house price
in the district, at £90,911, is 95% of the Northern Ireland average, and
represents an increase of 15% on the same time last year.
Moyle is one of the major tourist
destinations in Northern Ireland.
Designated an area of outstanding
natural beauty, the district is home
to the Giant’s Causeway, Northern
Ireland’s leading visitor attraction
with up to 400,000 visitors annually.
Whilst the average price is £90,911, it is important to note that there is
considerable variation in price across the different property types (table 9).
This varies from the price of detached bungalows costing about three
quarters of the Northern Ireland average to detached houses averaging
10% more than elsewhere in Northern Ireland.
Such figures illustrate the fact that the district offers a combination of
affordable housing for the first time buyer with a mix of sound investment
properties.

Along this dramatic stretch of the
Causeway Coast there is an
abundance of modern and historic
attractions vying for the visitor’s
attention, including the glorious
Whitepark Bay and Murlough Bay,
quaint Ballintoy Harbour, majestic
Fair Head, Rathlin Island with its
rare bird life and three lighthouses,
the breathtaking rope bridge at
Carrick-a-Rede, and the fabled nine
Glens of Antrim.
The district is also home to the

scenery.
Rathlin's
population is just over 100 and the
islanders are proud of their culture
and traditions, with story telling,
songs, music and dance being
popular leisure pursuits.
Carrick-a-Rede
The Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge
crosses a 24m deep chasm which
gives access to a salmon fishery.
The island offers stunning views
over the sea to the Scottish coast.
Glens of Antrim
From Ballycastle to Glenarm, the
Glens of Antrim slowly unfold along
fifty miles of stunning coastline.
The glens are characterised by
tumbling waterfalls, rushing rivers,
lush forest parks and spectacular
scenery where visitors are spoilt for
choice of things to do. From hiking
and golf to bird watching and
fishing, all are available in the area.
Water sports, sailing and a full
range of outdoor pursuits are also
on offer.
Glenariff Forest Park
Bushmills Distillery
The "Old Bushmills" distillery is the
world’s oldest licensed whiskey
distillery. King James I granted the
original licence to distil "Acqua
Vitae" in 1608 and Bushmills has
been making the finest Irish Malt
Whiskey for almost four hundred
years since.
Visitors to the distillery are invited
on a guided tour to experience the
craft and skills of making Irish
whiskey,
before
enjoying
a
complimentary glass of the final
product, one of the famous
Bushmills whiskeys.
Glenariff Forest Park offers the
visitor a spectacular glen walk
along three waterfalls and includes
a visitor centre, shop and
restaurant.
Ballycastle Beach and Marina
Ballycastle is home to two
European Blue Flag winning
facilities – its beach and marina.
The blue flag is given to resort
beaches that comply with European
awards of cleanliness, beach
supervision, provision of life saving
equipment, dog control, wheelchair
access and the highest standard of
bathing water under EC legislation.
Ballycastle’s superb 74-berth
Marina is one of only 12 in the whole
of the UK to be judged good enough
to hoist the blue flag.

Cultural Activities
One of the key attractions of life in
the Moyle District is its wealth of
culture, which is evident in the
music, song and dance of the area.
This rich culture is best expressed
in the many "fleadhs" or festivals
held in the area, which are enjoyed
by both locals and visitors alike.
Key festivals organised in the
district include: the Glens of Antrim
festival (Feis na Gleann), the
Ballycastle Fleadh, the Heart of the
Glens Festival, the Finn MacCool
Festival and the celebrated Ould
Lammas Fair.

and 6 all weather tennis courts at
the Sheskburn Recreation Centre.
The town also boasts two privately
owned swimming pools at the
Marine Hotel and Silvercliffs
Caravan Park.
Trout and Salmon angling is catered
for through the district’s three river
networks. The Dun is the biggest of
the Glens of Antrim rivers. Born on
the upperslopes of Glendunn,
where it winds its way down to the
Irish Sea at Cushendun, the Dun
offers seatrout, brown trout and
salmon fishing. The Dall and
Glenariff are smaller but offer
excellent sea trout fishing.
The Margy, Carey & Glenshesk
(Glen) river system is dominated by
the Margy. Rich in seatrout, the
Margy can be fly fished along the
golf course beats at Ballycastle. In
September and October
salmon are plentiful.

The standard by which all salmon
fisheries might be judged, the River
Bush offers an exceptional standard
of salmon fishing. In Bushmills
village, the beat boasts purposebuilt pools as well as carefully
managed fly-fishing-friendly banks.
Brown trout also abounds on the
Bush.
As an area of outstanding natural
beauty, walking is a must for all
visitors to the district. Key walks
include: The Moyle Way, which
follows a way marked track
between Ballycastle and Glenariff
through the Antrim Coast and the
Glens, Ballycastle Long Distance
Walks (4-18km), Cushendall Cliff
Path, Cushendall River Walk,
Giant's Causeway Coast Way,
Cushendun Heritage Trail, Glenariff
River Walk (which is part of the
Ulster Way) and Ballycastle Tow
River Walk.
Other Outdoor Activities include
rafting, rockclimbing & abseiling,
available at the Ardclinis Outdoor
Adventure in Cushendall, Pony
Trekking at Watertop Farm,
Ballycastle

Manufacturing contributes significantly to the economic life of the district. There is a diverse range of
manufacturing companies located within Moyle, the majority of which employ less than ten people. The district has
a vibrant agri-food sector which includes key food and drinks producers such as the world famous Old Bushmills

Public transport in Moyle includes coach, bus and taxi services. Whilst there are a number of privately owned
coach hire and taxi operators within Moyle, the main provider of scheduled bus services in the region is
Translink.
A boat service operates between Ballycastle and Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland’s only inhabited off shore
island. Between June and September, there are four return sailings per day; this is reduced to two return
crossings per day during the rest of the year.
