A Message from Our President
Who we are...
Dear Friends,!
Incorporated in 1973, the Fayette
The one thing that’s predictable in life is that it’s fundamentally unpredictable,
bringing new challenges every day. This is certainly the case in 2014—when the
abandoned animal population is surging—and when nowhere are the seeds of
success more evident than in the number of animals given a second chance.!
Humane Society is the oldest
nonprofit humane organization in
Fayette County, Georgia. !
Here’s a brief summary of what we accomplished in the first six months, thanks
to the generous support of our donors:!
We are staffed by volunteers and
!
are supported entirely by
• Permanent loving homes were found for 91 cats and 158 dogs.!
individual and corporate donations. ! • We provided 596 spay and neuter surgeries and advocated new policies to reduce pet
overpopulation.!
Because we do not have a shelter,
• We continued to save the lives of countless healthy and treatable animals through our extensive
foster care and veterinary network.!
most animals we rescue live in
temporary foster homes until they
are adopted. !
We believe all companion pets have
intrinsic value and deserve to be
treated with love and respect.!

FALL 2014
• We have deepened our partnership with Fayette County Animal Control and the Fayette County
Commissioners to test TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) as a means of controlling Fayette County's
exploding feral cat population. TNR has been implemented successfully in many other
communities and has proven more effective than Fayette County's long-standing policy of trap
and euthanize. Besides, TNR is more humane.!
!
Our achievements are proof we’re navigating well through complex and challenging times,
providing critical services to animals in need. Yet make no mistake. There’s still more work to be
done. The demand to find foster homes for cats and dogs has intensified, and if we receive
approval from the Commissioners to take over and implement TNR, we will need more volunteer
help than ever. !
I am confident that our wonderful volunteers will step up to the task as they never fail to amaze
me with their enthusiasm and hard work. In short, the Fayette Humane Society enables these
people to do what they do very well, and that’s a great place to be. !
As I hope you can tell, this excites me. We create value on so many levels. We’re hitting our stride,
and I’m confident that with your continued support, our efforts will result in many more animals
getting the second chances they deserve.!
!
Until they all have homes,

FHS Volunteer In Profile (VIP): Sharon Marchisello
In this issue of the Pet Gazette we are recognizing Sharon Marchisello. Sharon was born in Schenectady,
New York, grew up in Texas, and lived in various parts of the country prior to moving to Peachtree
City in 1994. In addition to work (Sharon is retired from Delta Air Lines and currently back as a
contractor), world travel, and master gardening, Sharon has published two books. Live Cheaply, Be
Happy, Grow Wealthy, a nonfiction personal finance manual, is available in e-book format only, and
Going Home, a mystery novel, has just been released by Sunbury Press in both paper and electronic
forms. Sharon began volunteering for the FHS in 2007, and through her skills, strengths and experience
contributes greatly to the accomplishments of this organization.!
!
Sharon’s volunteer duties are numerous. She tenderly cares for cats and kittens by being a foster mom and an adoption lead.
Sharon has been Secretary on the Board of Directors for three years, a member of the planning and newsletter committees,
and at times has answered calls on the cat line. A most valuable task that Sharon undertakes for the FHS is grant writer.!
!
With a Masters in Professional Writing from the University of Southern California, Sharon’s expertise has procured spay/
neuter grants from Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation, PetSmart Charities, ASPCA, Best Friends, Clothes Less Traveled and
Petco Foundation to name a few. Other grants have assisted with veterinary expenses, emergency medical assistance,
vaccinations and low-income pet owner assistance. “Sharon works tirelessly and spends countless hours applying for grants
that help us tend to the cats and dogs in our care,” said a fellow volunteer. !
!
Sharon has loved animals and owned cats all her life, mostly rescues. Sharon and her husband, Michael, have a 12-year-old
cat, Snow White, and their guest bedroom usually houses a foster cat or two. Sharon, we salute your hard work and
dedication to the animals of the FHS!

Changes in Our Aging Pets!
H o w O l d i s Yo u r Pe t ?
We all love our pets—young and old alike. Yet as they age, it
may be easy to overlook behavioral changes that can indicate a
medical or other problem. Prior to more obvious signs such as
changes in appetite, water intake, exercise level, urination
levels, vomiting and coughing, you may start to notice
behaviors that could be signaling an early sign of disease.
Promptly report any unusual symptoms to your veterinarian.
Pet owners, especially those who regard their pet as family, like to
know how old their pet is in "human years." You’re probably familiar
with the common method of determining a dog's human years by
multiplying his dog age by seven, but there are more accurate
calculations as shown in the following chart for both cats and dogs.
Possible Behavior Changes in Older Pets!
•! Increased reaction to sounds!
•! Increased vocalization!
•! Confusion!
•! Disorientation!
•! Decreased interaction w/humans!
•! Increased irritability!
•! Decreased response to commands!
•! Increased aggressive/protective
behavior!
•! Increased anxiety!
•! House soiling!
•! Decreased self-hygiene/grooming!
•! Repetitive activity!
•! Increased wandering!
•! Change in sleep cycles!

Quilla is playful, fun-loving

are naps—can’t be late for
those. “As busy as she is,
Quilla can always fit some
hugs and kisses into her

says. “She’s close to her
sister, Quasara, and would
love to go home with her.”

Grayson’s Home Sweet Home
Make a Recurring Donation
FHS drew a lot of publicity when one
of our volunteers rescued Grayson, a
young cat who had been set on fire
by gang members. Although he
recovered from his burns, he tested
FIV positive, which made it more
bestfriends.org
difficult for him to be adopted. In
January, he was transferred to the Best Friends Animal
Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, where his quirky personality
and gentle disposition charmed staff and visitors alike.
FHS just received word that Grayson has found a forever
home with a loving family who will provide the special
care he needs.
Many of our donors have asked for the ability to set up
recurring donations to the FHS. Now you have the option of
specifying through PayPal that a certain dollar amount be
automatically charged to your credit card each month. To sign
up, go to our website at www.fayettehumane.org/how-todonate/.
Come See Us at Shakerag!
The FHS is again participating in Peachtree City’s
Shakerag Arts and Crafts Festival September 20 and 21.
Last year's event was a great success and we're very
excited about the items being created by friends and FHS
volunteers. We will have some well-received repeats from
last year as well as creative new offerings. Most of our
items are animal-related. This is a great time to treat
yourself to something original and begin gathering
holiday gifts for friends and family. We'll be in the same
location, space number 25. Hope to see you there!
PetSmart National
Adoption Weekend!
The FHS and the Peachtree City PetSmart
store are partnering to make the PetSmart
Charities National Adoption weekend
September 13 and 14 a very special event.
Adoption hours will be extended, from 11
a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. PetSmart will also be holding its first
National Pet Food Drive that weekend. In addition to showing
dogs and cats looking for their forever homes, we will set up
tents in the parking lot with people food and entertainment.
Stop by and say hello, buy a tasty treat, and think about
adopting a new furry friend.!
More than 30 cats and dogs rescued by the Fayette Humane
Society found their forever homes at last year’s event! For
more information about adopting a loving companion animal,
